I want all Blu-ray movies to use AVC and PCM audio... high bitrate AVC... anyways, the sooner BD this war is over the better we can view our movies...

Truthfully, I don't care what codec they use. As long as it brings the highest quality video and audio; on a 50GB disc... no 25GB disc enough of those go dual layer and call it done.

Hmmm, do you think maybe sooner, considering that they are releasing all new titles BEFORE the HD-DVD version?

Which is strange because The Last Samuri was a about 20-25 and hitting 30 in some places but was dissapointed with the PQ. seemed a bit soft for such a recent movie. They did cram it with extras, so i think if the moved it to a second disc the film itself would have looked better

Umm, The Prestige is a Buena Vista (blu-only) title encoded with AVC. You sure you're referring to the right movie?

"All" is never going to happen. There will always be some BD25 titles. 25GB is plenty for many movies and titles without significant bonus content. Well, as long as we avoid MPEG-2...

It's a Warner Bro movie here in the UK!

And some movies really aren't intended to look like Crank or pure CGI like Cars.
Althrough i completely agree that there are many things that dictate the final PQ on the disc. as you say the quaility of the master is a major one. and if there is a weak link in the chain then you end up with an inferior PQ.

All i am saying that due to the space on a blu-ray disc, you can eliminate the bit-rate as a possible weak link. leaving only the state of the master as the remianing weak link. but if you watch closely at The Last Samuri then you can see something went wrong there. it's far too soft compared to other blu-rays of films of the same age. and many people are saying it doesn't look much better then an upscaled dvd. I'm keeping mine because it DOES look great, but i think there's a missed oppotunaty to make it look amazing.

I found the UK release of The Prestige (HD DVD port by Warner) disappointing. It has that "smoothed over" glossy, slightly lacking in fine detail look that you only get with Warner Blu-rays. It can't be the case that it's the master, it would be very odd indeed if all Warner's masters were like this, and nobody else's are. I don't think it's so much the VC-1 codec as such, as the tools used to encode to VC-1 and the pre-filtering they do. I much prefer AVC, personally, the results just look more like you'd expect film to look.

To me, a big giveaway for pre-filtering / smoothing is when something is a bit soft, but is grain-free. For film to be grain free, it would need to be low ISO, which should in turn give you bitingly sharp picture quality. You see this in Shooter, for example, where the higher ISO darker scenes have grain and are a bit softer, but the lower ISO outdoor scenes have little grain and are extremely sharp. But if I see something that has little grain, yet is not bitingly sharp, it just screams "processed/filtered" to me, because a film master should not have that combination of attributes, unless they used a poor quality lens, or didn't focus it properly.

I hope Warner re-encodes Blood Diamond at the 40 mbps range. That movie is begging for a super high bit rate encode it would look spectatcular.

how come that some movies in the us are from disney and the same movie in the uk/eu from warner? Like the prestige

i hear that the disney verson had the better pq.

i noticed this with the movie underworld, in the us you have the unrated verion by sony (good pq) and in the netherlands we have a dutchfilmworks versien (bad pq)

Why the make different versions? and not just one good one? because now i have to import this movies, and the bummer is: the prestige wil not play on my region b ps3
