Maybe they'll be able to blame it on the other comedies when this one doesn't do well?

I guess Shaft and MIB won't hurt the film as much, since there's not much hype/marketing for both (actually, MIB's marketing has amped up a bit).

There's plenty of marketing for both, I see Shaft ads all over social media and MIB has stepped up their push during the NBA Playoffs. It's Late Night that's been quiet.

That I've noticed.

True that there's not much marketing for Late Night.

Amazon sucks with marketing, so its not surprising they're dropping the ball with this.

I bet they expected the raves out of Sundance to carry this.

This isn't getting the second wave of momentum The Big Sick got heading into its release.

I wonder if it’s a film that got a bit overhyped at Sundance, as doesn’t seem to be connecting quite as strongly with critics: it has a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70 on Metacritic. Not bad by any means, but certainly not on the same level as Big Sick (with 98% on RT and 86 on MC) to give it that new momentum as the release is approaching.

Anyway saw this tonight at the Regal early access screening: no trailers but a live stream Q+A with Mindy Kaling after which was cool (loved that they actually found an old clip of Emma Thompson doing stand up for use in this movie), and it’s a good movie with sharp performances and script, but I do feel like Amazon might have overpaid with a record Sundance deal. As I think it will be a film that most people who see it like, but won’t have quite the breakout audience WOM or “one of the best movies of the year” type reviews that Big Sick got in order to stand out in a crowded summer movie marketplace.

Sundance has as many box office bombs as they do hits. Probably more, to be honest.

A lot of movies coming out of Sundance tend to be that way.

Just watched this. It is absolutely delightful from beginning to end. Emma Thompson's performance is way better than you could imagine.

I just got back from my screening and it might just be the most meh movie I have ever seen, in that I didnt hate it, but I didnt like it. It's absolutely just kind of... there. Pretty flat and lifeless for most of the film, with only a few of the attempted jokes actually eliciting a laugh. Especially when they are doing like the "show" segments and the audience is cracking up, but the jokes they are telling are so lame and unfunny you're just like, "really??"

Probably a 2.5/5 for me. If I had to round for a poll I guess I might give it the 3.

Emma Thompson's performance in this film is great! It's a shame that the rest of the film doesn't live up to it. I could have also done without the romantic subplots. 3/5

Exactly.

This weekend was 0 for 3 for me with MIB being the best (hate using that word for that movie). At least Late Night was better than The Dead Don't Die. But it just wasn't that funny...especially the joke they made a big deal about her doing on the show. That was an awful joke - even when ignoring the political element.

I saw this on Friday and enjoyed it. But I know it will trigger some people with some of the stiff mentioned or said. Because you know internet and all.

I would give it a 4/5

3/5 I guess.

Cute but forgettable. I laughed a few times, which is a few times more than I laughed at The Dead Don't Die.

It was a decent way to spend a Sunday afternoon but not something I'd want to watch again.

Check out Morning Glory which is a superior version of this story.

Went to see it before it disappears from my area. Liked it, didn't love it. It was a good character journey to go on for a couple hours.

I think a better ending
[Show spoiler]would've been for her to lose her show, her replacement bombs, she ends up on another network where she brings her staff with her and they crush the old show.

Amazon facing some changes in the face of this, and other recent releases, flopping at the box office. Apparently Amazon also spent $35 million marketing this, which while not huge for June wide release as they mention, won’t help it make money back.
