I spoke with the salesperson at Video Only (where I bought the TV and Blu Ray) and he told me it will actually look worse to have it calibrated. I also spoke with Best Buy and they quoted me $300.00 to have it calibrated professionally. Will professionally calibrating the TV really make it look that much better? Is it worth the $300?
Apparently, Sharp LCDs cannot be calibrated for color temperature (according to UltimateAVmag.com, and I saw it also in Home Theater):
Of the five Color Temperature settings, Low produced the most accurate results. Fortunately, it was quite close to the D6500 standard (see "Measurements"). Calibration could have improved it slightly, but calibration was not possible. As with other recent Sharp sets we have reviewed, calibration can only be done using proprietary computer software at the factory. According to Sharp, however, field-adjustable calibration controls should begin to show up on its new models coming in 2008.
I think this sucks specially if you spend your money to get it professionnally calibrated. The calibration will bring the color as close as possible to the reference 6500k but without the proper calibration controls this will not be as close as it should... As for as geometry goes, I don't think fixed pixel displays can benefit from this, correct me if i'm wrong be using a dot by dot setting with a digital signal on these types of this display and you will never get a geometry issue... (on an CRT, it's another story, you wouldn't believe the various geometry adjustments that can be made in the service menu, I adjusted some things on my own on my set (mostly the vertical alignment) and I can tell you that it's not really easy)

For your info, I asked a quote for getting my CRT HDTV and my LCD Sharp HDTV ISF calibrated. The guy quoted me 500$ for the CRT and for the Sharp he didn't know what he could get done on it... So I think you should try the DVE or Avia calibration disk as a starting point and compare your results with other users, you will at least get halfway there but you won't get the results that professionnals can get with the right equipments...

By the way I didn't get my sets calibrated. 500$ is a lot of money for me, but if I had more money and 500$ was like 100$ to me, I wouldn't hesitate a minute!
