Once BD becomes more mainstream and it is not just for early adaptors and second generation adaptors, they will have to start making more discs, the more they make the lower there price and then the lower our price it is not just supply and demand but also the law of production that dictates the price, and no company is going to go on losing money once they have won the war. It will go down in price again, but it maybe awhile, I for one am willing to wait, especially on older titles. The prices are what they are for now.

I fully expected prices to rise. That's what really pissed me off about the Warner announcement-I purchased my bd30 maybe a week or two beforehand, and only got in on one or two b1g1s. I do not look forward to a less aggressive pricing scheme.
I was hoping to pick up the new ps3 sku with 5 more free ones (or maybe 10), but looks like that is out as well. meh |

And Sony is definitely behind the rise in prices for milk and gasoline.

2. Items generally go on sale during the holiday season and go back to regular prices. Are you disputing that? Lower prices will only increase sales if consumer demand is there and people generally will purchase less after christmas simply because they were over spending for gifts in the past calendar year. If consumer spending is expected to be flat, retailers will raise prices back up in order to maximize revenue from the lower volume. Speaking of percentages, over the past year the US has dropped by 12.02% against JPY, 15.86% against CAD, and 12.42 against the EUR. I'd say that it is probably just a seasonal fluctuation although there may be other economic factors in play. The fact of the matter is that the US market has not yet felt the effects of the sinking dollar. You might not want to argue with someone concerning a topic that might not be one of your core competencies. ![]() Last edited by aristotles; 02-02-2008 at 08:26 PM. |

Its the after Christmas sales, if you look, DVD prices have gone up again. From most movies being £10 when they came out, they are now like £14.

IMO I believe they initially set the MSRP way high to let companies like best buy and CC to make it look like they were giving a great deal with 33% off or BOGO and things to that nature to get a consumer buy in to the formats. (both Blu-ray and HDDVD) As you know by your wallet like mine its taken a pretty good hit from these Blu-ray's. Cause what most consumers want are "Sales". The word sale itself drives that impulsive buy because what it the "sale" goes away? oh no! lol....But anyway I really believe that is the reason for the high prices. Now on the flip side if a company wants to make some money back from these sales they can just keep some around the MSRP to help compensate. This is obviously IMO.

At least in the States, this is considered "retail slump" between mid-January and May. Once President's Day rolls around, sales start hitting, and then by July 4 we stay in full-on sale mode through back-to-school, which ends in September. Then you've got Veteran's Day, a slow October, and then Thanksgiving/Xmas starts again. It's cyclical. Plus, Americans are spending less right now due to a weak economy, and everyone's getting their Xmas credit card bills and their adjustable rate mortgage adjustments and are wondering where the money will come from. Less discretionary income means less spending. That's why Walmart just started slashing prices, cuz their after-Xmas sales figures are crap. |

Blu-ray has a competitor. It's called DVD. In order to move people from DVD to Blu-ray prices will have to, can you guess??...that's right: FALL! ![]() Within the Blu-ray market itself, there is also competition. The following companies are competing for your Blu-ray hardware dollars: Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Funai, Mitsubishi, Denon, Philips (and more). The following studios are competing for your Blu-ray movie dollars: Sony, Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Warner (and soon a few more majors).. Toshiba's pricing was sheer lunacy and was a major contributor to the downfall of their HD format. At the moment HDM is still a premium product and needs to be priced accordingly. You cannot force the market to adopt HD by artificial price reductions (which is what we have seen throughout 2007 - and continuing in 2008 - from Toshiba). Blu-ray Prices will fall steadily and in response to actual market conditions. The pace at which Blu-ray is adopted will dictate the rate at which prices fall. We will continue to see isolated promotions based on price, which can be used to bring in the next wave of buyers ready to move on to HD. Crucially, with HD DVD out of the way, there will be complete unity in promoting Blu-ray and that will lead to a faster uptake of HDM and a faster reduction in prices of both players and movies. The death of HD DVD is excellent news for the long term existence of HDM. Something that any movie fan would be happy about. |

What's wrong with you guys?
![]() Next holiday season when regular retail prices lower, when holiday sales hit, player prices drop, what's it going to be then? How are you going to attribute that to HD DVD? |

I want to see my movies with the best sound and picture possible, which is why I support Blu-ray. Although there are exceptions, that's more the impression I get with Blu-ray supporters in general too. |
