Too bad though for the 1080i-only set owners as they'll find out that their signal would get sent again to blurry 480p.

I'd personally recommend that they stay away from the game until Sony releases a fix for the 720p issue.

I think the fix will appear in games instead of a software patch. The new games will support upscaling if the tv doesnt support the 720p resolution.

Those games aren't coming out until March so I doubt that will even be an issue by then.

This is an important point. Generally you want the game to have optimizations for several target resolutions. And if they were going to settle on 720p and scale, the game itself should be involved in the scaling process to insure the maximum quality.

Scaling is a compromise. A cheat. It's never as good as something targetting a specific resolution.

Now, keep in mind MANY (like 50%) of 1080p sets improperly de-interlace 1080i inputs. So, even if people got their 1080i output from a 1080p upscale, it might end up being 540p.

How would this scaling go?

720p -> 1080p -> 1080i output/input -> 540p -> 1080p?

Ugh.
