As long as all blu-ray players are able to play DVDs, the format will never die.

A long long time, as with the move from vhs to dvd, some titles will be left behind from dvd to blu.

With all HD players being backwards compatible, and so many cheap dvds about.. I dont see an end to it's dominance.

Is a format dead when it sells sells less than 1/2 the competition or is it dead when it's almost impossible to get.

People still buy vinal records, lots of people swear by them, but it's a dead format. I think cassete tapes are more dead than records though records have been around a lot longer.

I would say without a doubt that VHS is dead now. Because you can not buy new release movies on VHS. You can not go into Blockbuster and rent a VHS tape. That doesn't mean I couldn't find a VHS tape if I really wanted one. Many people still use them to record stuff. I'm not sure how many people are recording TV with DVRs vs DVD-R vs VHS but it wouldn't surprise me is there were more people using VHS to record daytime TV than DVD-R.

CDs are not dead the same way. I like the idea of having a CD that I can rip into iTunes now, and if something better than iTunes comes out in the future I can re-rip it. I could sell the CD, or buy a used CD, or I can go into almost any store that sells electronics, general merchandise or books and find many CDs. They may not be selling as well as they did 10 years ago, but they are still selling. I would be surprised if digital music sales have surpassed the sales of CDs.

I wouldn't be surprised if in 3 years more new release movies were sold on Blu-Ray than on DVD. I would be surprised if you couldn't find a DVD. I think Blockbuster will be renting DVDs for at least another 7 years, and new releases will be comming out on both formats for at least another 5.

I love Blu, but DVD is not going anywhere anytime soon.

Considering the current level of interest in DVD versus Blu-ray, I'd say DVD will unfortunately be the dominant format of choice (besides streaming/direct-to-TV viewing) for a long time coming.

People seem to overall care much more about convenience, price and quantity versus actual quality.

Well think how long it took VHS I probably give it about the same especially as they are DVD recoders and no BD ones.

And if you say CDs are dead then you've obviously never been to HMV.

That all depends on price. If the the average DVD buyer sees a DVD for $4 and the same on blu for $20 or more DVD will never die. Keep in mind that many still think the DVD is fine in their eyes. So far blu is still a niche group like it or not.

Also there are stories of other formats coming that have the potential to offer more than what blu ray can so its anyones guess. I see the possibility of long term leaders like VHS or DVD being a thing of the past. Hollywood would love for you buy the same movie on as many formats as possible. Ever think of that?

My guess, just as long as Blu-ray is also around. Maybe 10 years or perhaps more. Hopefully BD will become the dominate format in the next few years it probably will never completely replace DVD.

For that fact, CDs never completely replaced LPs for many but then LPs can have an advantage over CDs that DVDs can never have over BDs.
