I will buy them, but only if they release decent versions early enough in the Blu-ray lifecycle. The first DVD versions of the movies were poor so I didn't buy them. The decent versions were released too late so I didn't buy them. If all the Star Trek movies were available on Blu-ray today with good transfers and encodes, I'd buy the whole lot. If they don't arrive for another 3 years, I may well not bother.

It was the same with the TV shows. I bought all the STNGs because they came out quite early in the DVD life cycle. But then I saw them re-released both cheaper and in better packaging (more compact). So when DS9 and Voyager came along I decided to wait for the better packaged cheaper versions, but again, it was just too late in the lifecycle by the time they arrived. I'd buy TOS because I can just about cope with 3 seasons in huge boxes, but there's no way I'll buy STNG, DS9 or Voyager in huge boxes.

TOS if they leave out the new CGI or provide some kind of branching so I could see it in its original state.

I think Sylar may annoy me as Spock...although he does look like him.

It's more of a pick and choose kind of situation for me. I'd definitely get #1 and 6 (my personal favorites of the ones with the original crew). As per TOS Remastered, I'm not sure. I still have all the DVD's of the original series (still haven't gotten around to them yet), and while it's tempting to the get them on fewer discs and cleaned up, there's still the purist in me that wants to see them with the original crappy fx, not to mention that they'd still be insanely expensive.

Well, according to the poll, ST:First Contact is #1, WOK & Undiscoverd Country are tied for second and Nemesis would be 4th?! Looks like Nemesis had a few more fans than I thought. (including me )

I think the 11th movie should've been "Star Trek:The Search for Data's Soul...yup that's right, he's in B4 somewhere. We just gotta dig around a bit but eventually we'll find him, before the 2 hours is up anyways"

Long title I know but it'll work.

Nemesis wasn't a horrible movie, but in my opinion it just had so much potential to blow fans out of the water. A movie heavily involving the Romulans couldn't been outstanding. Instead they went a totally different direction, which really didn't work, and then killed off a character.

Is that really how they wanted The Next Generation cast to go out? Saddening, to say the least.

Own the remastered and the original DVD then when you wanna be a purist you can watch the DVD low def version, which is what everyone saw when it was released no?

Trust me he plays the part perfectly.
I saw Nimoy and Quinto standing next to each other on the set. Their manorisms are identical. Of course Quinto is a different actor and is not exactly the same, but he did a great job.

All I can say is this movie is going to be great. For what I have seen J.J. Abrams is doing a great job. We will all just have to wait to see the final product.

And by then it will be released on Blu-ray.

First Contact and Nemesis were both examples of what I want from a Star Trek movie. I'm not saying the other movies were bad, but that I'd prefer their content as season finales in a series. First Contact and Nemesis are two movies that I could pop in the player as stand alone movies and be amazed by one for the brutal hand to hand, and the other for the brutal ship to ship. As only a light Star Trek fan, those are two I would buy just for the pleasure of watching them.

I voted for the new one on the basis that JJ Abrams is the director. This guy has talent. His series tend to go astray when he leaves them (they're too convoluted to survive without him), but that problem doesn't exist in movies and so he's pure gold.

Blu-ray has spoiled me. I can hardly watch the DVD versions of my Star Trek films - even upconverted, which seems to amplify the compression artifacts.

So I agree, they deserve a quality release on Blu-ray.

I'm not a Star Trek "nut" by any means, so this may be why I have a problem, but I was disappointed by the remaster in that most of the shots, I simply can't tell they changed a dang thing! While I'm not saying that they should have thrown the baby out with the bathwater, I would have liked to have seen a more updated look to the space shots (the other CGI shots involving actors have been fairly well done IMO).
You should watch what he original shots looked like. The whole point was to not look like they changed a damn thing, but to make them more natural, none of these awkward forced perspectives for example, the bad compositing, the generic looking planets that were obviously someone pulling out the airbrush and spinning them around. Gene Roddenberry would be very pleased, and so would Matt Jeffries. They took what was there, re-created the original intent in something that looks as good as the rest of the show, and for the most part without trying to put their own creative stamp on it, and with the full cooperation with the surviving producers.

This is a remaster, not a redo. It's a restoration to what the show would have looked like had they the $$ and technology, and unlike the SW SEs, the goal is to not be overly obstrusive with it. What you're asking for would violently clash with the existing footage.

You make some good points and I agree that it looks better than the original, I still think it could be better and still not clash with existing footage. But that's just my opinion.

Really I feed the same as writer of this article.

Hopefully if The Next Generation is remasterd, I hope they redo the CGI maybe even add a few extra in. Hopefully equal to the CGI of Star Trek: Enterprise.

FYI, and I haven't read this whole thread, so forgive me if it's been said, but ST:TNG, STS9 and ST:VOY were all shot on film as far as I know, but edited on video. So long as the film elements are in good shape, there's no reason an HD transfer couldn't be created and released (ala TOS).

And having said that, I'd buy all those shows on BD. =)

Are you referring to the originally aired episodes, or tests for the new remastered version?

I respect (and understand) the desire to make it look natural, and keep it "faithful" to the original show. That being said, I think they failed in keeping it looking "natural". See, I see the changes they made that make the show look better, and then I start getting disappointed by the lack of improvements on the "Enterprise" shots. To me, it would have been a more "natural" look keeping the show just like it was without a changing a thing...

When I first heard about the "remaster", I mentioned it to my Uncle and Aunt who got me interested in "Star Trek" many years ago when I watched "Star Trek V" at their house. They were interested in it because they said they found it hard to watch TOS anymore because the effects were just so cheesy looking. When I watched the first "remastered" episode on TV (they can't get the local channel it's on), I was unimpressed and told them so. They were somewhat disappointed. While I'm OK with cheesy effects if that's the way the film/show was filmed, I find the "cheesy" looking spaceship effects to more "violently clash" with the existing footage than a complete CGI overhaul of the space scenes... and it appears I'm not alone in that regard. I completely agree with some of the statements made below your post and in the link provided by MasterXeus.

As far as SW is concerned, I'm probably one of the few who was personally fine with most of the CGI changes. The only instances where it bothered me was when they replaced the older Anakin from ROTJ with Hayden, and when they had it where Greedo shot first... and the worst thing is the fact that Lucas doesn't even consider the original versions any more.

Why would someone go to the trouble and expense of going back and replacing the footage with CGI, but making sure you don't do a very good job of it so as to not make it clash? That just seems like a waste of time and money to me. I also have to wonder how "pleased" Gene Roddenberry would be since he always seemed to be a "visionary" to me, and I just don't see him not wanting to make his work be the best it could be.

We live in a world where fans can have both the original versions alongside a remastered" version thanks to "seamless branching" or deleted scenes, so purists (and history) can have the original episodes, but still allow Paramount/CBS to bring the show into the 21st century.

~Alan

I guess you can count me has one of the few. I like most of the CGI changes. I also didn't like the changes you metion, the only other CGI change I didn't like was the scene that involved a meeting between Han Solo and Jabba the Hutt. I though Jabba was too small, compared to Jabba in Return of the Jedi.
