By saying MP3 was the "winner", I merely meant that despite the quality differences, MP3s are more popular and sell better than the other formats. The convenience of MP3 won out over the quality of SACD and DVDa.
I thought the iPod could play Apple Lossless Audio... am I wrong?
Since I am not a real "audiophile" (but have begun to notice the differences more and more lately) I am not familiar with all that there is in the High Def audio world. I am not willing to spend a lot of money on it, and with my current set up I am more than happy with it. A friend of mine is a serious audiophile who has a pair of $26k speakers hooked up for a $18k CD player, state-of-the-art turn table, and top-of-the-line SACD player. THAT system is beyond anything i will ever have and will more than just amaze me. I am trying to get him to do the whole thing in surround sound for the multi-channel SACDs and Blu-rays too.
I think he would greatly appreciate the quality and the surround sound. He has tons of speakers of all different sizes and shapes, too bad he is not willing to give me a few that he doesn't use much heh heh
But seriously, I just want something that has higher audio quality than a standard CD but more importantly, surround sound. I just got a Porcupine Tree album on DTS DVD-a. Very impressive but not as much as DSotM is. Still, good enough for me. Is there a future for surround sound music?

Too bad it never caught on in USA, too many competing formats and then MP3.

I have a question about SACDs though too...
I just started to get into them, and DVD-a too, but am wondering, since MP3 is the real "winner" of the music formats, how are these other formats doing with releases? Do they get many new releases? Do they have a "bright" future? Will I see more things I want on them?
I must say, I am really into things like Prog rock and Classic Rock and the like, but have had a hard time finding many titles on SACD so far. Dark Side of the Moon is awesome, but I want more like that! Any suggestions?

I'm into the hi rez music as I have over 200 discs in BOTH formats. It looks like all that is left coming out are a trickle european produced discs in both formats. The good news is I think it's switching over to blu-ray (re Neil Young etc) so hi rez music isn't dead yet.

Two suggestions:
Roxy Music - Avalon (sacd) is incredible.
Pocupine Tree (many albums on dvd-a) are also very good.

Check this site out as it has many user ratings plus info on just about everything hi rez:

Yes, I definitely think so. There will always be, at the very least it will be a niche market for the enthusiasts. And uite frankly I don't care wat format it's on, but I really do hope Blu-ray will become a format for music (don't get me wrong, I do appreciate physical disc music formats VERY much).

I think you'll find for rock genres DVD-A is not too bad. There's quite a lot of releases, and for the new listener getting into it, the albums released to date can keep you wow'ed and occupied for quite a while (depending on your buy rate and wallet size of course!) But then, yes, one day the stuff you can find thins out, and you start to wonder when any new releases will come out.

At the moment there's only a trickle of DVD-A releases I know about so far in 2008, but one guy in the industry I know has at least 10 releases in the slate. Ringo Starr just released one, Procupine Tree's new album Lightbulb Sun is now for pre-order, No-man have an album coming out in May. There are also rumors about the entire King Crimson catalog being put out on DVD-A!

Jazz and Classical are more in the SACD realm.

its sort of like the MiniDisc player here in America. there arent that many out there, but there is a group of MD enthusiast. outside of america? different story.

it aint like the cassette or the 8 track i can tell you that...
I am glad u corrected me on this... I was pretty much ready to throw-in the towel, with MP3 and other music downloads now, UR lucky to find someone who's even hear of DVD-A, or SACD when u ask about it at music stores... your point is well taken though. Right now I have a dedicated HT system for blu-ray and HD-DVD... (yes, i know... it's dead, but it still rocks!) anyway, I have been considering a dedicated music system... Budget permitting, i'm thinking of a dedicated pair of floor standing speakers for my bed-room, pre-amp, DVD-A/SACD player, the works!... I am thinking B&W 800 series, opinions? Are these speakers really as good as the price indicates? Any hidden gems when it comes to equipment?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I couldn't find an obvious answer in searching the forum. Might be a dumb question, but will (any) Blu-Ray players be able to play DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, CD, HDCD? If so, then how? Will they have multiple reading heads?

Thanks!

Eventually I foresee universal players coming out. That means BD, DVD, CD, SACD, & DVD-Audio all in the same machine. Denon has hinted as much for their next generation of BD players within the next year. Right now there is sporadic support. Certain versions of the PS3 support everything but DVD-Audio. Certain early Panasonic BD players supported BD, CD, DVD, and DVD-Audio playback. Of course there are many universal dvd players that don't include Blu-ray support. Multiple reading heads are common in universal players.
