Yeah even if your not a game freak...Just look at the ps3...glossy black...shiny chrome...Its the more stylish out of all the consoles and looks better than any stand alone out...And if you ever want to rent or play a game like maybe GTA 4....You always have the option...If not...You can just use it for a blu ray player...Same cost...and update the blu ray player for future kicks.

Sony announced that the PS3 will be Blu Ray 2.0 Profile compliant with the next major upgrade. This just furthers my position that the PS3 is the only decent blu-ray player for the price.

Just to keep this current for any potential suckers thinking of buying a stand-alone player:

The Sony, Samsung, and Sharp Blu-Ray players have painfully slow boot up times and are not even Profile 1.1 compliant. The time before you can actually watch a disk is at least 2 minutes from my experience. My brother purchased the Sony and I convinced him to take it back after he turned it on and then died of old age waiting it to be ready to play. Apparently any "java" enabled disc is significantly worse with them, but we didn't have one to test.

We went back, spent about an hour playing with the other $400 players and they were all highly deficient compared to the PS3.

The PS3 on the other hand was ready in under a minute, and even throwing aside the games available for it, it is a fully featured media center and will very soon be the only Blu-Ray 2.0 profile player that doesn't require a mortgage.

The Panasonic was good, but it was $100 more than the PS3, out of stock, and did not have any of the multimedia features of the PS3.

The entire point I'm making here is that stand-alone blu-ray players are a complete rip-off at this time, and only a complete moron would pay $400 for a blu-ray player that's SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE than the playstation 3 for the same price. If you want a blu-ray player for under $500, get a PS3 or wait. Those are the only two reasonable options. Don't be a dipshit who buys a blu ray 1.0 profile player that takes 3 minutes to boot when you could have gotten a PS3 for the SAME PRICE and had a 2.0 player that takes < 1 minute to play a movie, can play great video games, and servers as a media center.

I don't care how much DVD players used to cost, or laserdisc. I'm talking about blu-ray players as they currently exist. Unless you want to spend over $500 on a player, get a PS3 or nothing. Anything else marks you as a grade A sucker.
It's worded harshly, but sometimes you need to go to the extreme in order for people to start listening. I agree 100% with everything that he/she wrote and could not have expressed it better without getting downright boligerant.

I have the Sony BDP-S300 and "guilty as charged". It does take 45 seconds to turn on. Non BD-J (Java) movies load in about 30 seconds. However, firmware updates are making great strides in speed improvements. POTC 1 would take 3 or 4 minutes to load, now it takes well under 2.

While these seem like long load times, I immediately forgive once I see the picture. That is life with blu-ray for now. But I hear the newer Panasonic models are almost upto par with PS3 in load times. So, you can still get a stand alone player - just get a new model.

It's basically true... although I own a Panasonic DMP-BD30 and love it... but the only reason I own it is that it came "free" with my TH-42PZ77U.. actually took $50 of the price of everything because it was open box. I was going to buy a Blu-ray drive for my HTPC... thank god I didn't go that route. The software isn't even close to as good as a PS3 or a BD30.

I do disagree a little bit because after owning the BD30 for three months I can honestly say I'd buy it again for $499. And if you can find one out there for $400-450 it's worth it. It's a really solid player and Panasonic has been good with firmware updates. BD-Live doesn't concern me AT ALL. The load times on the Panasonic are very good... I wouldn't even notice except people make a point about it.

The only reason I'd ever think to get a new Blu-ray player is if I needed one for another TV.

Now is indeed a bad time to buy stand alone players. They are too pricey (again), too limited, and soon-to-be out-of-date.
The PS3 is the best (and IMO only) option for a Blu-ray player, since it is at a good price, have TONS of capabilities, and is future-proof!

You have to remember that like HD DVD players, PS3 is subsidzied, and artificially low in price, and even down the line will be sold at essentially cost

To me, I would never use a game system as anything but. I have a CD player, 2 DVD players(Pioneer upconverter, Phillips upconverter for region free), 3 game systems and BD player on the rack. Each is for its own purpose.

Dedicated BD players, especially the high end stuff are built like a tank. There's a reason why my Pioneer DVD player was still kicking like day 1 9 years down the line when I retired it for the upconverter.

Given the past history of the PS1 and 2, I would not expect PS3 to be nearly that robust, especially with all the folding and constant media center use. I welcome being wrong on the topic, but that's a major reasons why someone, along with all the additional options like lossless via analog, would choose a dedicated player rather than a PS3.

The dedicated decks of the future, as the prices go down, and as history has shown wll not be nearly as robust as those earlier models either, so the $400 you spend now may be better than the $150 player you replace twice over Blu's lifespan you buy 3 yearsfrom now

I've been very happy with my Panasonic stand-alone as it suits my AV layout better than a PS3 would.

Profile 1.0 players are for early adopters, 'nuff said.

Ask your friend how he's enjoying those dts-ma tracks on his PS3, compared to the Sharp, Samsung and Panasonic owners.

My ps3's fan gets extremely loud when it's in the shelf with the doors closed. I have to leave them open when watching a movie or playing a game or the fan kicks into high and cannot be drowned out.

that's my only complaint, and it's easily avoidable by leaving the doors open to let air in and out.

I won't be as rude as the guy in the 1st post, however there are other considerations no one who is a PS3 fan is talking about here. Soon there will be high end manufacturers who will be bringing out machines that will be far superior PQ and AQ wise to what exists right now. There is no way a $499 combi machine will compete in this realm with the $2000+ BD players that will soon be here.

So far:

If you are into games PS3- Most bang etc.

Panasonic DMP-BD30-50 Most complete so far for sound etc.

Pioneer Elite BDP-95FD- Best Picture so far-

From Ultimate AV Magazine on the Pio BDP-94HD:

"The biggest plus here is perhaps the most important- this player offers the sharpest, crispest and most detailed image I've yet seen from Blu-ray. On my projection screen this player's picture was always a subtle but noticeable hair sharper than that from the Sony PlayStation3. Slight bits of film grain and other very low-level details were always just that extra bit more apparent and the image was always just a bit more three-dimensional. Looking at the PS3 by itself doesn't leave anything to be desired, but in comparison the difference was surprisingly apparent."

Hey, everybody's got their opinions and to say one (PS3 vs standalone) is better than the other just isn't that simple. We all know that full quality video is supported by all. So, next you have to consider full high quality audio support and that's were the differences come in. The PS3 doesn't have multichannel analog outs which allows people with "old school AVR" to enjoy the new high res. audio! The PS3 cannot bitstream any of these audio formats as of yet. And there is no support for DTS-HD Master as of yet. These are all great omissions for me. I simply want the very best video and audio while playing BDs, all this other crap (like load times) is secondary for me. I have the Panasonic DMP-BD10AK (and love it) seems to load just fine for me.

Don't get me wrong, I have seriously considered a PS3 as my second BD player and I'm sure it's an awesome piece of equipment. It's just that it doesn't meet my audio demands for now because of my older AVR. I'm looking to get the new Panasonic DMP-BD50 as my main BD player. I know my first one has served me well.

I would not even consider buying a standalone Blu-ray player today when there's a machine as versatile as the PS3 available for the same price.

The PS3 is the only Blu-ray player with a CELL processor built-in, and between that and built-in internet connectivity it is highly versatile and future proof. On top of that it has:

BD Live 2.0 (the only player so far)
PC media streaming of music, videos, and photos
Super Audio CD playback - both 2 channel and 5.1 multichannel
CD playback - great upsampling support, so I had to mention it
DVD upscaling to 1080p
Built-in hard drive to support movies, music, and photos
Folding at Home - to help contribute to curing cancer and other diseases.
It freakin' plays Rock Band! (as well as other PS3, PS2, and PS1 games)

I could not fathom spending $400-$500 on a Blu-ray player only to leave those key features on the table. With the PS3 you get the best Blu-ray player on the market, and it offers so much more beyond Blu-ray playback as well.

When the ps3 gets 5.1 analog outputs I'll agree. Until that happens I'll stick with my standalone !

I agree with you !
I have both. A stand alone and the ps3. I prefer the standalone due to it's 5.1 analog output (sammy 1200) I also will be buying the Panny 50 !

For me, the PS3 is perfect. It plays all my HD files (easily converted if the format is not supported), can media stream to my mac, has excellent quality, 7.1 surround sound with HDMI.. I just can't complain at all about it!
I can see why people think the PS3 would not be as robust as a stand along player... but I disagree. It is built like a tank. I love it, but if you do want a stand alone player... now is not the time to get one.

Why did I buy a standalone instead of a PS3?

PS3 wasn't released yet.

My BDP-1000 works pretty well for taking a risk on the "early adopter" equipment. It may lack a lot of things, but I've seen other "initial release" technologies go worse than this.

I do plan on getting a PS3 in the next few months. If only I can convince Best Buy to take my BDP-1000 back under the 4-Year Warranty.
