Default Is There Any Truth to This?

Is this person right, and should I avoid buying a stand-alone unit? Someone wrote this on another forum:

Sony announced that the PS3 will be Blu Ray 2.0 Profile compliant with the next major upgrade. This just furthers my position that the PS3 is the only decent blu-ray player for the price.

Just to keep this current for any potential suckers thinking of buying a stand-alone player:

The Sony, Samsung, and Sharp Blu-Ray players have painfully slow boot up times and are not even Profile 1.1 compliant. The time before you can actually watch a disk is at least 2 minutes from my experience. My brother purchased the Sony and I convinced him to take it back after he turned it on and then died of old age waiting it to be ready to play. Apparently any "java" enabled disc is significantly worse with them, but we didn't have one to test.

We went back, spent about an hour playing with the other $400 players and they were all highly deficient compared to the PS3.

The PS3 on the other hand was ready in under a minute, and even throwing aside the games available for it, it is a fully featured media center and will very soon be the only Blu-Ray 2.0 profile player that doesn't require a mortgage.

The Panasonic was good, but it was $100 more than the PS3, out of stock, and did not have any of the multimedia features of the PS3.

The entire point I'm making here is that stand-alone blu-ray players are a complete rip-off at this time, and only a complete moron would pay $400 for a blu-ray player that's SIGNIFICANTLY WORSE than the playstation 3 for the same price. If you want a blu-ray player for under $500, get a PS3 or wait. Those are the only two reasonable options. Don't be a dipshit who buys a blu ray 1.0 profile player that takes 3 minutes to boot when you could have gotten a PS3 for the SAME PRICE and had a 2.0 player that takes < 1 minute to play a movie, can play great video games, and servers as a media center.

I don't care how much DVD players used to cost, or laserdisc. I'm talking about blu-ray players as they currently exist. Unless you want to spend over $500 on a player, get a PS3 or nothing. Anything else marks you as a grade A sucker.

I agree, well not exactly as strongly as you do, but I agree nevertheless. I was talking about buying a Blu-Ray player with my soon to be wife. I was considering buying a standalone player, but after doing the research I bought the PS3. Our concern is that the games would become an obsession and why I was considering a standalone. However, it has a lot more bang for your buck. I'm happy with the purchase. It's got the wifi and the media stuff, and there's a lot of fun multiplayer games like rockband out. That is amazing. I haven't regretted my purchace.

Not sure I'd phrase it the way that he did. It's kind of harsh.

The PS3 was updated to profile 2.0 (BD-Live) tonight. A lot of what he's saying is true. The PS3 is one of the better players (faster, more upgradeable in general, upgradeable to BD-Live, etc.) so it's a good choice but there are still pros and cons to each. Recommending the PS3 is pretty good advice though, especially at this point. Sooner or later though, the standalones should be able to eliminate some of the issues like long boot times, taking longer to load discs, etc.

I actually bought a stand alone blu ray player......it played blu rays and they looked good...But when i found out i had to start downloading discs off the computer and having sony send me discs...to update it i thought about the future..

I felt bad because i was like...i just spent 350 on a blu ray player...i couldve thrown in a little more and had a gaming system with good games...blu ray player that loaded faster...and could update via online to the highest profile out....

Well i looked at my receipt...to find it was day 13...and i had 14 days..I rushed it to best buy..and they didnt even charge me a restocking fee they just gave me all my cash back..And i put that cash and some more on a 80 gig ps3...NOW i feel like i got a deal here!

I think even buying a blu ray player with online capabilities is selling yourself short...When you can actually play games on the ps3 too...

And in conclusion...All the blu ray players i have seen look ugly compared to the ps3 design...THATS just my lil 2 cents tho

The big difference you'll see between PS3 and something like the BD30 from Panasonic is the audio codecs supported. Currently the PS3 doesn't support any form of DTS-HD MA (but may in the future) for example. Some people also don't want to buy new receivers that support Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA from HDMI, so instead want a player that decodes it internally and passes it on via analog.

Yeah but what i think about is...My wife or any chick you would naturally bring to your crib...They would like the looks of the ps3...and like to play a game sometimes..like pain or something like that..

As long as you got a nice tv...and surround sound...who cares about decoding..like someone will come over and say...HEY WAIT A MINUTE THIS SUCKS...WHY ISNT THIS DECODING!!!! I CANT WATCH THIS...

No...but after the movie...if your buddies is over you might wanna play something....or if ya girl there she might want to...Really a stand alone..you got movies and your done...nothing past that...

Thats how things go over on my side of the world tho..I dunno about everyone elses out there....

Fan noise seems to vary from PS3 to PS3, but that is the main reason I'll be buying The 2.0 Panasonic BD player in May or June.

the fan noise would only bother you if you was like 2 feet from your tv with the volume turned all the way down.....if your at a normal distance from the tv or you have surround sound...I dont see how you would hear the fans

Its not a xbox 360

Well in my case and the other 2 friends i have watched blus at there house...didnt bother me..But we might have the 3 lucky ones

I bought the panasonic bd30 and is pretty happy with it. The reason why is because my brother already have a ps3 and I the wife have a ps2 and gamecube. I also is trying to stay away from buying games because I know that if I have a ps3, I would have to split have my money to buy games and have to buying BD......

...but yeah, what he say is true.

I personally don't understand why anybody WOULDN'T buy the PS3 as their blu-ray player? Who the hell cares if its a "stand alone" player? I have never understood this. The maching plays blu-rays; and does so better than most, if not all blu-ray players. Yes its also a gaming machine but that doesn't mean you have to play games on it. Its the absolute BEST blu-ray player on the market right now. And because its fool proof with online updates from Sony it probably will continue to be the best player available. It loads as fast as my regular DVD player, it has built in wi-fi, stores my photos, upconverts better than any player I have seen, and as a bonus it plays games in HD! What on earth could be a good reason NOT to buy it? To me it is an "ESSENTIAL" piece of equipment for any home theater. I absolutely love it!!

Well mine is about 5 feet from where I sit, and it only bothers me during low volume dialogue, but it is noticeable. My friends' PS3's arent as noisy as mine (original 60gb) so obviously I have a noisy one. I watch a lot of movies while my family sleeps so I have no choice but to keep the volume low for when explosions and shit happen during the movie. Besides, its an excuse to buy the beautiful new Panny player coming out soon.

Another reason I want to get a standalone is to reduce wear on my PS3. I went through 5 PS2's over the last 6 years or so, and I watched all my DVD's and cd's on them. I will now have a PS3 for games and media streaming, a Panny BD player for BD movies, and an Oppo 981 for DVD's, DVD-audio's, SACD's, and CD's.

All you have to do is have self control...Buy some games and some blu rays...Buy games you will like and play and movies you will watch.
I bet department stores love people that buy stand alones.

Havent catched on to why people would pay the same price or more for a player that doesnt do everything.....

Now youll be wondering...How is gta 4...or how is resistance 2....

If i owned a store like best buy and we had stand alones on the shelf...and ps3s...i would say how the hell can we sell these for the same or more money than a ps3..when all it does is play blu rays....???

Then someone buys it...o ok...guess people will buy anything...look they bought the norbit blu ray to go with it...heheheh

You guys are luckier than I am then I guess. I almost bought another PS3 to replace it, but figured screw it, I'll just get a 2.0 standalone player when its available.

I actually wouldnt mind having a 2nd PS3 and a 2nd display so that me and my friends could play online games in the same room, since it seems developers dont want to add any offline multiplayer features to games anymore. I remember the good old days when you hung out with friends in the same room, and played games together in the same room. I guess the gaming industry just wants us all to be loners, lol.

Most people just arent as educated as us folk navigating message boards on various sites. There are some legit reasons for certain situations to have a standalone instead of a PS3, just not very many reasons.
