I recently purchased a Plasma TV and like all first-time plasma buyers, I've heard and was concerned about IR and burn-in. Thanks to the helpful advice of dobyblue, I downloaded a breakin-DVD to break-in my TV. I'm about 2/3 thru now to reach 100 hours. When I just got the TV, I detected some very slight IR after viewing letterbox movies ( 2.35:1 aspect ratio ) or TV programs with channel logos ( which quickly go away after 10-15 mins of clearing it with a signal pattern ). Now, there is no IR at all even after 2-3 hrs of letterbox movie.

So yes, I think break-in does helps for my case.

From what I've read, it's more of an insurance policy than anything the lessen the risk. If you mix your viewing material, and don't have static material for long periods of time (black bars, channel logo, etc), then you'll probably be fine. Since we don't game and rarely watch DVDs in our bedroom, we'd probably be fine too.

But I'll let the disk play while I'm not home or watching it to minimize the risk even further.

So, your IR went away by using the break-in dvd? Also, how do you track how long you have run it if you take the disc out?

The disc runs for 24h.
Run it through 5 times and you're at 120 hours.

I def. agree with you, I dont play games at all, me and the misses just watch blus and tv, it would be nice to play the games, but im not going to risk leaving 100 hours of useless time, for no reason, or anything and waste money, you really need 100 hours of life time for the tv and then calibrate it, im not worried as of yet, but it is useful information.

The IR is actually very faint and I need to get real close or eyeball the screen basically to detect it. I usually left the disc running everyday for 3-4 hrs in the evening when I'm back from work and 6-7 hrs during weekends so I track from there. BTW, you don't actually need a break-in DVD to breakin the TV. Everytime you are watching a movie or TV program ( without static onscreen logos ) which fills up the whole screen, you are actually breaking-in the TV. The break-in DVD is just more convenient in that you can leave it on and do something else while it plays back continuously until you stop or switch off the player.

a guy on AVS said every night when he went to bed (7hrs) for two weeks he put a movie (or burn=in DVD) on repeat...sounded like a decent idea to get to 100 hours fast

I'll send you one pre-burned if it doesn't.
I have a bunch of spare bubble mailers from when I used to do a lot of b&p's for people (taping/trading phenomenon - http://www.mcnichol.com/bnp/) - it would only cost me about $1 to send you one.

If you can't figure out a way to get one...and providing you're in North America, PM me your addy and I'll get one off to you.

thats falicy. ever been to an airport? they use lcd monitors, and do have screen retention... lcds just have to sit for longer period of time to retend. personally, dont know what that level is, but they do have screen burn possibilities as well.

The whole list of what I have, although I haven't updated it in about two years, is all listed right here:

http://db.etree.org/dobyblue

I've since added quite a few 24-bit shows as the tapers these days are always recording directly to 24/96 (and sometimes 176.4 or 192).

Obviously most of it is Dave Matthews, Dave and Tim or Dave Matthews Band, but there are some other shows from Bob Marley, Nine Inch Nails, The Verve, etc., that I'm quite chuffed to have gotten.

There's also a lot of Dave Matthews stuff that's not supposed to be traded in there too as it violates the taping policy. The "IEM" recordings are all "no-no's" in the DMB community as someone has picked up the FM frequency and so on the recording you can hear the band talking to each other during songs, making jokes, being guys, etc.

Any digital soundboard recordings made after 12.31.95 are also against the taping policy. The band used to let tapers patch into the soundboard until then, but then I guess it became impossible to do as they gained in popularity and didn't want the sound guy messing around trying to help tapers.

With the money they spend on their taping equipment though, the quality of the tapes over the last 5-6 years has been pretty incredible. Whenever you go to a DMB show you'll always see a few different 12-15ft taping rigs in the crowd, normally over to the side infront of one of the stacks. Very cool when artists like DMB, Phish, Dead, Bruce Horsnby, etc., allow the crowd to tape.
