As I have read off of comicbookmovie.com (which I cannot link to since I am at work)....

Marvel Studios has the creative license to Iron Man and Hulk, but they also have the creative license to future X-Men titles, future Spiderman titles, the Wolverine movie, and the Magneto movie. They are trying to buy the creative license to the next Fantastic Four, but since FOX had a contract for 3 movies, FOX can technically make one more without Marvel Studios having any control (and we've seen how the first 2 came out).

Likewise, while Sony has rights to Spiderman, Marvel Studios has rights to Spiderman 4. So if Tobey McGuire (hope I got that right) stars in Spiderman 4, then Marvel can use him in other movies if they want.

The goal here is to make the movie world more in-line with the comic world. Superheroes cross over in the comics, and the stories are better that way. Marvel will be the controller for the creative licenses, that way, if a Wolverine movie wants Spiderman to do a cameo (only when Marvel gets rights to Spiderman), they have less need for FOX and Sony to come to an agreement. Marvel Studios will control both, so they can have Tobey show up as Spiderman in a Wolverine movie, or Hugh Jackman show up in one of the next Spiderman movies.

Likewise, with Hulk and Iron Man as examples, if they want to have Iron Man show up in his Hulkbuster armor, they can do that storyline, and have Ed Norton as the Hulk, and RDJ as Iron Man. And THAT is what Marvel thinks will boost sales, and I agree.

This releases the "lock" on superhero team-ups. DC suffers this, in that they will likely not be able to do a Batman-Superman movie, since two different companies own the separate entities. Only way to do it would be with completely different actors too, and even that gets messy. So if DC made a "Studio", and got rights to both Batman and Superman, then they could have the actors from the separate movies star in one movie together.

Marvel Studios is aiming for crossover continuity, which should be a big deal for comic fans. I, for one, am thrilled.

There's no way that is correct regarding Spider-man and X-Men. Sony has total control over motion picture production rights to the Spider-man character. They are producing and financing as many Spider-man movies as they want for as long as they want. Marvel has nothing to do with that. Likewise for Fox and X-men. They have total control.

In 1999, Marvel licensed Spider-Man rights to Columbia (by then absorbed by Sony) for a reported $7 million.

I'm sure they get a % of the film's profits since they created the character, but they have nothing to do with the film production.

Sony has made almost $2.5 BILLION worldwide on the 3 films combined. I seriously doubt they would want their biggest franchise to share the spotlight with other Marvel heroes.

These of course are on top of Wolverine, Magneto, and any others planned by other studios (possible FF, X-Men, or Spider-man). Also, you can bet if The Incredible Hulk does huge numbers there will also be a fast track put on the sequel to it as well.

i like how Marvel is involving/merging the characters and movies of the superhero films with their respective actors.. great stuff.. im shocked actually at how long its taken for anyone to do something like this.....

anime has been doing it since decades ago and its always a great thing to see

now about Captain America.... i hope they dont mess up... but i guess it cant be worse than the last Cpt.America film (i actually enjoyed it as a kid)

The question on who owns the villains from the movies is a good one. I haven't seen anything about this.

Last time I checked, Warner Bros. owns DC comics and has been the only studio to release DC comics-based movies. Just because other production houses help produce them doesn't mean that the characters can't cross over. My understanding was that the JLA movie is being held up due to lack of a decent script, not character wrangling (and I believe Christian Bale said he wasn't interested in doing a JLA movie. I don't have a link, so if someone could verify/disprove, by all means.......).

DC couldn't raise enough money to buy the motion picture rights of Batman or Superman from Warner Brothers. That will NEVER happen.

I would say Sony owns Venom and every other villain assoicated with Spider-man.

No, Avi Arad said as a kind of "apology" for how Venom was done in SM3, they were planning on giving him/it his/it's own movie. As for the when...probably quite awhile.

I've also heard Bale refuses the idea of JLA, but haven't actually seen confirmation.

Maybe if ("if"...HA!) Avengers does well, they could do an Avengers West Coast...but I doubt it. So maybe we'll see Hawkeye in the sequel.

Am I the only one who wouldn't like an "Ultimates" Avengers? I liked the arc, but it's already been done in the animated movies, and for the big Hollywood endeavor, a mix of classic and contemporary would fit better.

No, SPE own the rights to all characters used in the Spiderman movies and others that have yet to be disclosed to the public.

When Columbia 'traded' the Spiderman licence with MGM way back when they went and bought the rights to loads of other characters and villans including my personal favourite Felicia Hardy, others include Carnage and The Lizard.

I actually think all 3 of those will be in the next Spider-Man....

but they will go cheap with the carnage scenes just like they did with Venom..

Marvel has the rights to Spiderman 4 and X-Men 4, so anything that shows up in those movies falls under the rights to Marvel Studios, even if they also were in the previous movies done by someone else.

maxpower already addressed this...

SPHE owns anything in the Spider-Man films and I would assume Fox owns the X-Men stuff as well...
