Mm, sorta. I really liked how it flashed back to the previous films without using actual footage. I stopped watching the movie after about 10 minutes, only because I had something better to do. It had great special effects, but I don't think even the film itself knew what the hell was going on. Still fun though.

There are 3 versions.

1. The Theatrical, 2. Directors cut (with 20 mins of extended and extra scenes - its not just the ending) 3. Extended Directors Cut (as seen on the R3 DVD) - this is basically the directors cut with a producers gag thrown in - an undead rips the shirt off a screaming woman.

hum... I have the gold DVD one, and it has the undead shirt rip of the woman in it, plus all the extra scenes

Nothing can beat the 2nd one, but I still like the 3rd. Will not watch the 1st.
I hope that they do release all the version on one Blu-ray disc, either by seamless branching or whatever.

So....I just watched the first one last night for the first time...I DVR'd it along with the second one....really, a great flick!! I was happy with the whole thing....I can see why it has garnered a cult following. I plan on watching the second one tonight!!

Well from all the reviews, all my friends, my sister, my sister's friends, and various other descriptions....
all pretty much say that the first movie is too much like a student film, and those that know me say I won't like it... while the second one covers the first one in the first few minutes and then goes on longer.
Its really just that I don't think I will enjoy it based on everything I've heard and read, and that I will be fine without watching it since the 2nd one is all I really need to see.
To each their own, so if you like it, great, but I'll just stick with the 2nd one.

To everyone who thinks Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn is a remake:

The second film is NOT a remake. The first few scenes with Ash and his girlfriend going to the house, her getting possessed, him killing her, and him spinning around in the air are all a quick run-though (more of a reimagining) of what happened in the first film (Sam Raimi couldn't get rights to the original, so they had to re-shoot it, then they decided to change it round a bit). The film turns into a real movie just as Ash wakes up from the mud.

It's the same movie you just need a region free DVD player. I never imported it, but LOTS of people claim it has superior video quality than what was released in the states.

I'm still waiting on blu...

I disagree. The HK Region 3 is the only DVD release that had access to the original MGM film master. And it looks much better than the other releases.
