Come to think of it, the limit may have been because of physical size - larger capacities are slightly larger to fit more platters/heads and the PS3 only has a certain sized slot. I think that's all rubbish though.

Looking forward to the results.
Hitachi made some taller 12mm drives that don't fit in any standard laptop/PS3 bay - they had an extra platter to bump the size. However others make large drives that are the standard form factor.

For laptop hard drives 5400 rpm is normal except on desktop computers, 7200 rpm is always preferred, of course they do make hard drives that hit 10000 rpms... but at this point you would need to worry about heat distribution, obviously a hard drive that spins slower would probably produce less heat then one at 7200 rpm, and one at 10000 rpm would generate even more heat.

Im not saying that would actually cause a problem nor giving analysis to suggest that just perhaps throwing that thought out to the wilderness.
Actually they make 15,000 RPM drives. I have one in my Gaming PC. It's only about 70 gigs and it cost over $600. It's also SCSI instead of SATA and meant for servers instead of desktops. But as for notebook harddrives, 7200 is the fastest I've seen.

On a side note, I've seen 7200 RPM drives run cooler than some 5400 drives. I've not done a whole lot of research into the heat issue but good ventilation helps a lot.

Default Dvr

My only reason to get one of these drives is if the PS3 ever gets the DVR function. Any updates on that???

I'm pretty sure that's one of those non-standard 12mm ones that won't fit .. see my post above.

Its been awhile since ive shopped for hard drive, glad to see they hit 15000 rpm..

Its usual for a 7200 rpm to generate more heat, but then you factor the different company's and not all hard drives are created equal, im assuming with higher quality parts it would be possible, I was offering general information...

If they don't fit in a laptop, and they don't fit in a PS3, they probably won't fit in most USB enclosures. That narrows their usefulness down a LOT.

I'm going to watch this thread as well. If it works I'll upgrade for sure. 5,200 RPMs sucks but it'll will prob keep the heat down as discussed.

Seems like the perfect HD for the PS3.

Samsung Ships World's First 2.5" Half-Terabyte Mobile Hard Drive for Notebook PCs

Samsung Ships World's First 2.5" Half-Terabyte Mobile Hard Drive for Notebook PCs
San Jose, CA on Mar 04, 2008
San Jose, CA, March 4, 2008 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, announced today that it is shipping the world's first half-terabyte (500GB) 2.5" mobile hard drive – the new Spinpoint M6. The Spinpoint M6 is designed to fit the industry's standard 9.5mm height dimension and armed with a massive 500GB capacity, the drive is targeted to meet the growing storage needs of today's notebook computers as well as slim form factor PCs and high density mobile applications.

"Our customers require more and more notebook storage for their data, video and music files", said Andy Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales and marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. "Our Spinpoint M6 easily fits within notebook PCs with no modification to the notebook PC chassis, giving users more storage power than ever before."

Samsung's new Spinpoint M6 consists of three 167GB platters in a 2.5" hard drive frame measuring just 9.5mm in height. This critical feature gives notebook PC manufacturers the option of easily integrating the Spinpoint M6 into the tens of millions of notebook PCs that ship every quarter.

Mainstream notebook PCs can now support capacity of up to one terabyte by employing two Samsung Spinpoint M6 drives. For premium notebook PCs, the Spinpoint M6 meets the Microsoft fast-boot design requirements and supports ramp load and unload of up to 600,000 times.

The Spinpoint M6 500GB hard drive features a 5400rpm spindle speed, a 8MB cache, and 3.0Gbps SATA interface with a Free-Fall-Sensor available as an optional feature. Perpendicular Magnetic Recording technology enables the 500GB drive to store 160,000 digital images, 125 hours of DVD movies, or 60 hours of high definition video images. The drive also features Samsung's Flying-on-Demand head technology that improves recording stability over changing temperature ranges.

The Spinpoint M6 is currently shipping with an MSRP of $299.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the performance results are with this new Samsung drive. 500 GBs is huuuuge!!! Reading the specs reminds me of a question I've been meaning to ask though. Does the PS3 fully support the 3.0Gbps SATA interface speed? I had read somewhere that it was 1.5 Gbps SATA, but I can't find any info now.

Okay, back to drooling...

They've had 15,000 RPM drives since at least 2002 when I had my PC custom built. I've since upgraded the processor, motherboard, sound card and graphics card then added a second harddrive (actually that second one which was a 500 gig 7200 RPM Maxtor failed within a year and had to replace it which I got a 750 gig 7200 RPM that I think is a Seagate) but my 15,000 RPM main drive is still alive and kicking. Just wish 1) They made larger capasity 15,000 RPM drives 2) They were cheaper and 3) used SATA rather than SCSI cause it takes up one of my two PCI slots for the SCSI card.

But anyway, generally speaking the faster something moves the hotter it will get. I wasn't disagreeing with that. I put a 7200 RPM drive in my PS3 and it doesn't seem to be running any hotter but I've always kept my consoles well ventilated. People may like to keep them behind glass in their entertainment centers or hiden out of sight but it's just really not good for them boxed up like that.

I've heard about this also, that no matter what size hard drive you put in, the PS3 will only recognize 205 available GB.

Other people have already reported putting 320GB drives and getting more than the 205GB. That number actually came from me (on this board) and another review out there when installing a 250GB drive..I think there was bug in one of the firmware revisions when I did the upgrade that caused that .. at some point I will backup/reformat/restore to see if a newer revision changes anything.

I'm using a media server for non game files so I'm not sure I need 500GB. Still if I were to change the hard drive I might as well go big for all of those down loaded games like Warhawk, Stardust and such.

I will be interested to hear how things go. The largest laptop drive at Newegg is 320GB so they don't have it yet.

I have an external 500GB USB drive for backing up the PS3's. They are dirt cheap now.
