They're saying no films are completely destroyed..that's good news..not just for us anticipating Universal films on Blu..but for everybody who has ever been apart of these films in any way.

I saw a report saying the video backup vault, and not the film vault, was damaged.

I know what happened. A really upset HD DVD fanboy decided to ignite the place because he couldn't stand losing. All the other studios better keep an eye out or their fate will be similar.

first, I hope that no one is hurt. Second, I hope that none of the film masters are affected. I will keep my eye on this story.

I took this excerpt from yahoo...

NBC Universal President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer says 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged in the video vault, but there are duplicates in a different location

so in other words....always have a back-up!

I don't know the archival strategy or policy Universal Pictures uses, but I do know the original negatives and certain other safety prints of many movies are stored in deep underground vaults far away from Hollywood.

One of these vaults is a former salt mine in Hutchinson, Kansas. At 650 feet below ground the humidity level stays put at 40% and the temperature doesn't waver a degree or two away from 68°.

That particular site has a large tourism museum. The company operating the storage facility keeps watch over many film masters, highly priced stamp collections, valuable microfilms and lots of other sensitive materials. They have at least three other storage mines; the others are former Limestone mines.

I do feel it's pretty disturbing the fire has possibly damaged Universal Studios' video library. They have produced a lot of TV shows over the years. Archival episodes of some may be lost forever unless other copies of the tapes have been safely stored elsewhere. Even still, if you lose the master tape you're screwed unless it was digital based. You'll get generational loss each dub away from the original master tape.

Analog dups tend to be of lesser quality than the originals...

KABC just stated that it sounded like all of the videos were not the masters...

Save the clock tower!!!!!

if there was ever a time to be thankful for redundancy, this is it. Now, Lowry better get his hands on those originals and turn them into digital masters before another stupid accident occurs.

Thank God no people were hurt. There's no backing them up!
