This is my first post and i dont claim to be the most knowledgeable person on br's or high end equipment but what i do know is (even if it is a sd master, which i didnt know) then EFNY is 10times better than the old DVD release, anyone who says BR's aint a genuine leap in quality must have crap in their eyes.

So while not 100% amazing compared to some transfers, EFNY is certainly a marked improvement over what is already available.

Only my opinion though.
No way, Jose. The EFNY Blu-ray is disgusting and should be out of production already.

Compare it with the DVD again. The DVD upscaled at 1080p offers the same resolution than the Blu-ray, because the Blu-ray doesn't didn't use the right source, and I still think it's an upscaled source too, so same thing as the DVD. The Blu-ray is vastly disgusting, and has the worst edge enhancement to date. Everything on the EFNY Blu-ray has a white halo, and the blacks are crushed, which eat up any shadow detail. EFNY is the worst Blu-ray- The DVD is better (especially the PAL DVD). I bet the sound from the DTS-HD track isn't any better than the DD 5.1 track on the DVD, because this is a lossy track that impresses me with it's clarity and it's directional effects. Another-words, I don't even think they've restored the audio either.

I've got the Escape from New York on DVD on PAL (576 horizontal lines), and the Blu-ray offers no detail or clarity gain, but just ugly fat edge enhancement.

PAL DVD any day. Stay away from Escape From New York on Blu-ray. Never advise anyone to buy it.

+1 I love this movie. Keith David and Roddy Piper, 'nuff said.

Also has one of THE best fight scenes ever.

And it has Evilyn from Masters of the Universe with Ivan Drago.

Fenders,

My EFNY dvd is the R1 original release, with a DD mono track and the first dvd release of the film i bought on import in 2001. I think i paid £20+ for it, then there was a Special Edition a couple of years later, I refused to double dip so the blu ray to me, pisses all over what I have.

It was one of the first blu's i bought tho so I will have to have another look and comparison as i only viewed it once. Im not really one of them who goes over the top to find stuff to pick at, if its beter than what ive already got it'll do for me.

They Live needs a blu release tho, is there a spec edition of that? My dvd is only 2.0 with a terrible picture.

I've got some great screenshots of the US DVD, PAL DVD, Blu-ray, and HDNET streams of Escape from New York. PM me with your email addy if you are interested in seeing them. From best to worst though:

1) HDNET
2) PAL DVD
3) NTSC DVD
4) Blu-ray

The first edition of Escape from new york I have no clue about. No reason not to upgrade to the PAL DVD. It's had for cheap now.

Any review which only awards The Fog 2.5 out of 5 for the actual film itself should not be considered definitive. It's a classic.

Maybe it looks better than the US-DVD, but even worse than the German DVD, because of crushed blacks. It's a Standard Definition upconvertion, that's a fact, never mind what Gary wrote at DVDBeaver. Just look at the screenshot comparison of the UK Blu-ray vs. the German DVD at caps-a-holic.

Yeh, its a upconversion but i still think it looks better than that german one too, ive just spent 20mins going through each pic over and over and the blu has a bit more clarity and doesnt look as soft as the dvd.

Its only opinions anyway isnt it, if you think the blu's crap thats your opinion and im fine with it. Just my original post was that in my opinion the blu was a major step up over what i had (the R1 dvd) which i think the dvdbeaver proved, if i had the german or uk pal release and id have blindly bought the blu and i wasnt impressed i would have been the first to say so.

I know, "here I go again", but as is traditional with me:

Could someone do the same (comparing screen caps) with THE FOG? While I do like the EFNY blu transfer, I do agree that the HDnet transfer does look better. I will say that my only real beef with the Optimum blu-ray is:

(1) blacks so deep that detail is lost from the DVD version (compare the scene when Plisken is first entering New York on his glider, especially when he teeters on the edge of the WTC - in the MGM 2-dvd release, you can see some good detail below; on the blu, its so dark you can barely tell there is a road below)

(2) all of the extras are in PAL format, so unless you have a region free machine, you can't play any of them.

I have just gotten a hold of the US MGM transfer of Escape from NY and it is miles apart from the UK disc! This needs a rerelease, badly!
