I don't trust the accuracy of the bit rate display I have, but the Warner version is considerably lower than the Universal version. Warner's very rarely approaches 30Mb/s whereas the Universal version is frequently close to 40Mb/s for the same scenes. The Universal release has DTS-HD MA.
Both use VC-1.

I guess this is now an academic exercise, but will be the closest comparison of HD DVD and Blu-ray as both use the same CODEC but Warner is pushing HD DVD to the limit and Universal is doing the same to the Blu-ray standard.

So it seems as though the video is better (perhaps significantly better) with the Universal release? How about the actual audio? Has anyone noticed any worthwhile differences between the two?

Has anyone online reviewed the UK version of the movie? There is definitely a possibility that the video looks significantly better and the soundtrack is better. The DTS HDMA track is a 24 bit track, for starters.

we rented it (AUS, R-Free), the sound was great, (the DVD had DTS which was also great), the picture was average for a catalog title, nothing impressive. but for Twister its always been the audio for me. The sound of the eerie storm when they are at the drive-in-theatre blows you away (and the sub).

I have both versions. The US version from Warner with Dolby True and the UK version with DTS MA....normally I wouldn't have bothered buying 2 but it's one of my favorite action films, and I wanted to compare as well and be sure I had the best one......

There is NO question in my mind that the UK version is superior. Universal did a much better job than Warner did. The bit rate of the picture and sound is much higher, and it shows....and this seems to me to be a better transfer of the film, it is not as washed out as the Warner version. There will probably be people who have their doubts because of this back-and-forth TrueHD vs. DTSMA issue, but I think the sound mix on the Universal edition is much better (because I think it is a different mix). I've heard the soundtrack from this movie dozens of times so I know it very well. The Universal mix is superior. This was not from the same element as far as I can tell. The opening sequence is sharper, the weather sat shot is a much darker black sky, but the objects and stars are not any darker, so overall better. The shots of the red truck are a more brilliant red in the Universal edition, and close-ups do not seem to have as much DNR in my humble opinion.

I am very glad I ordered this one from Amazon UK. I got mine for 25.00 (US dollars) shipped...and sold my USA copy for 15 bucks so I only paid an additional ten bucks. Anyone else have both and compared? I would be interested to hear what others have to say.

UK Universal edition:

Have you gotten a hold over the new version? If you have, could you post your thoughts? I appreciate everyone's help with the reviews.

I am interested to see what other people think as well. I have watched both versions several times and the quality of the UK is so much better. The UK version is what I remember in the theater, at the opening credits, when the twister breaks up the titles, you can actually hear the tornado twirling around the room and shaking, I did not get that feeling from the Warner US edition, it is there but not nearly as clear and well mixed. There is no doubt in my mind that this is a different transfer, the opening begins with the Universal logo being lost in the clouds rather than the Warner logo, and the picture quality is better as well as the sound. When Bill Harding (Bill Paxton) arrives to get his divorce papers signed, the close-ups of the faces are so much more detailed. Then after Jo (Hunt) loses her father and it desolves to the sat.station, the sky is a much deeper black and much more realistic and detailed. It is obvious that Universal did not use the extensive DNR that Warner did. The color of his red vehicle is even a slightly different shade of red and the color tones on the faces is more natural. And check out that dark twister that back-builds (the 2nd tornado, the really dark swirling cloud on the hill right before Jo admits to Bill that she thinks the tornado came after her father). The detail is so much better. I am so glad I ordered the UK edition.

I did import the warner edition. I will admit I forgot who did the UK version of twister when I brought it. I then relised after I brought it. Oh well shame on me for not checking but it was good to have it for a while it was not out in the UK.

Now Universals version had come out universal had done a better job then warner had done over all and the sound was the biggest improvment for me. Could be due to a different mix.

I comparied the both and its the same everytime I see a comparision of warner vs another company the other company always wins and warners always sucks (no supprise there).

I gave my brother my copy of the warner edition after I did the comparisions.

Today I received my copy of Twister, unexpectedly. It was scheduled for delivery on Monday. Opening up the oddly packaged eco-friendly box laid my copy of Twister.

So, after taking the pictures, of course, I popped in the movie. I found that the root menu is a language selector for the main menu, which I think is pretty smart and interesting.

After selecting English, I waited for it to load to the main menu. The main menu is much better organized and was unexpectedly well put together with music and moving backgrounds.

So, to the start of the movie! As mentioned before, the Universal logo is located in place of the Warner Bros. logo that most of us are accustomed to.

Already at the start of the movie, I noticed that the sound stage, dynamics, clarity, and bass quality had improved significantly over the Warner Bros. version. I've played Twister more times than I care to count on Blu-ray, DVD, and VHS. I've never heard the soundtrack sound any better. I felt more enveloped in the movie than ever before at the beginning sequence. Mind you, that's just the audio from the first seconds of the movie! The video quality. Just wow. The clarity, sharpness, depth, color accuracy, black levels, all were a significant improvement over the Warner Bros. edition.

Readers intrigued by the Twister U.K. Review.

The opening score sounded like it always should have. It felt like a live orchestra was playing in my theater. The weight, air, depth, and detail was all there. Voices play very naturally and clearly, even in the loudest of sequences, a clear improvement over the Warner Bros. edition. At some points of the movie, I would easily say the video is reference quality; something that the Warner Bros. edition only wishes could match. I anticipated seeing the Red Dodge, as it was mentioned as being one of the things to look for. I had high expectations and they were easily met. The color of the truck was very different from the Warner Bros. edition. Very impressive.

Nice truck you've got there!

Moving along to the first tornado with the the storm-hunting duo, I noticed many things as mentioned earlier for positives, as well as a noticeable improvement in sound on the higher end. There was bass clarity and authority along with much more realistic higher end. I believe the overall mix is superior to the Warner Bros. edition in just about every regard possible. The extremely high bit-rate track and better mix most likely attributed to a much more enjoyable experience than the Warner Bros. edition.

Smash!

I do believe that Universal made a valiant effort into polishing up the movie Twister for an excellent transfer/remaster that was badly needed.
The processed and gloomy look from Warner Bros. really did no justice to the film that is truly much more upbeat. I can safely say, this transfer of Twister is one of the best transfers I've seen on Blu-ray and is easily one of, if not, the best Blu-ray's I've played in my theater so far.

All of the gang packing it up after dumping their Warner Bros. edition.

The rest of the movie provides for a very enveloping experience. The music is spot on; the orchestra is just excellent; and the sound effects are one-of-a-kind.

Ah, it's hailing inside my house. How wonderful.

In my opinion, the Warner Bros. edition doesn't even seem to try to compare. The DNR, flatness of the picture, and uninspiring sound mix (yeah, the Universal version is that much better), and poor navigation options all combines to make a pretty poor transfer of a movie deserving better. The Universal version offers a superior transfer in every aspect as well as tying it all together with smart menus, good organization, and just plain good thinking. In this version of the movie, you are able to bookmark your place of where you last left off or simply to bookmark, unlike the Warner Bros. edition, and you are able to mark certain scenes that you like and are able to access them in the My Scenes section of the main menu. Also, unlike the Warner Bros. edition, you can learn new languages and put your language skills to the test with six different audio tracks and fifteen different subtitle options. All in all, there goes without a doubt in my mind, my highest recommendation can be offered for this version of Twister. If you like Twister, like good quality transfers, like to learn different languages, like smart menus and options, or like anything about movies, you should pick this one up.

There's the rest of my house!

Welcome to the happy club of U.K. version of Twister owners, hehe. Obviously you have seen the movie as much as I have and are also familiar with it, it's worth every penny to import this one. The Warner edition looks faded and washed out, and while the sound on the Warner edition beats the Warner DVD, it can't come close to this U.K. Universal release. Boy, imagine all these movies we are getting from Warner that have so-so transfers, it makes you realize just how good they could be.

ps: thanks for the screen shots, obviously you spent alot of time taking and uploading them, but I must say to people considering ordering the disc, these shots in no way show just how good the transfer is, I suggest asking Driver_king for the high-res shots he offered.
