I guess this is true, but I consider it American because it is set in America and in English. So it is put out on a technicality. Spaghetti Westerns should be considered American Movies based on their setting and language in my opinion.

Compare to other films on the Western list, Tombstone just doesn't stack up. Tombstone is a very good movie, but is it one of the best...no. If 3:10 to Yuma is a better film that Tombstone.

Yea the multiple movies some actors were in stood out the most too me. Like John Wayne, Hackman, Deniro, Stewart, etc.... Suprising who was and who was not represented multiple times.

Also what a class act Michael J Fox is. Seems like a great guy. I'm sorry to see him go through what he is going through. But he seems to be taking it in stride......

Tombstone was not even a possibility to make the list. I was looking at the ballot for the list, and the rules eliminate a lot of fan favs. Here are the rules:

CRITERIA
FEATURE-LENGTH FICTION FILMS
Narrative format, typically over 60 minutes in length.

AMERICAN FILM
English-language film with significant creative and/or production elements from the
United States. Additionally, only films released before January 1, 2008 will be considered.

GENRE
See criteria for genre on each chapter’s title page.

CRITICAL RECOGNITION
Formal commendation in print, television and digital media.

MAJOR AWARD WINNER
Recognition from competitive events including awards from peer groups, critics,
guilds and major film festivals.

POPULARITY OVER TIME
Including success at the box office, television and cable airing, and DVD/VHS
sales and rentals.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE
A film’s mark on the history of the moving images through visionary narrative
devices, technical innovation, or other ground breaking achievements.

CULTURAL IMPACT
A film’s mark on American society in matters of style and substance.

Sorry I have to disagree. The look and feel of that movie really drew you in. and I dont know about you but the image i'll always have of Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp will be Val Kilmer & Kurt Russell.

I agree that Val Kilmer and Kurt Russell will be Doc Holiday and Wyatt Earp, but that does not mean that the film is one of the ten best westerns ever.

I was dissappointed there was no Comedy, Musical, or Horror genre's.

Also, how could The Apartment not make the list on Romantic Comedy? It is ten times the movie that Sleepless in Seattle is. And what about Breakfast at Tiffany's for that matter?

Ok first, I have seen this movie twice and about 5 years ago. My memory of the film is a little short. I never once said that it was not a good movie because it is a very good film. It was a little formulaic. The acting was good and Kurt Russell did a marvelous job. It just didn't bring anything new to the table. There were bad guys who did bad things, and there were good guys who did bad things to bad guys for good reasons. The film just doesn't stand out with anything really interesting or new. The film goes headfast into the final gunfight. It definitely a good film, just not one the top ten best ever. It maybe could have sneaked in at 10. I wouldn't be suprised to hear that this film was #11. I haven't seen many of the films on the western list, so my opinion is kind of skewed.

Back to the Future III should have been on the Westerns list.

Also, how is Lawrence of Arabia on this list?! It is a British film. Sometimes I swear that the AFI includes movies on these lists regardless of criteria just because leaving them off is a travesty (in their eyes).

Michael J Fox is, without a doubt, a very classy person. I saw him give a speech to a set of congressmen about Stem Cell research, with Parkinson's as an example. He is a phenomenal speaker and provided thorough data supporting his cause. I met him several months later at a charity event in Florida, and he was very cordial and considerate. He actually has quite a pesence in person...

It was hard not to get choked up when he was describing the speech Lou Gehrig gives in "Pride of the Yankees." Gehrig describes himself as the luckiest man on the face of the Earth. Michael Fox expounds on the speech saying: Your life is not defined by what happens to you at the end, but everything that happend for you up to that point..... Great outlook!

You know the speech. It really was a great speech, wasn't it.

I'd put it ahead of Terminator 2 and Back to the Future at least.

Some of them in the Fantasy category are a bit of a stretch genre-wise. Field of Dreams could be moved to Sports and I wouldn't characterize Groundhog Day as a fantasy.
