Of course, I don't know what their involvement was in this deal - so, I'll leave it at "Supply and Demand was underestimated". |

I think Sony underestimated the demand..
If you want BC you have no choice but to wait before getting a ps3 and MGS4. There is no other option. If the 80 gig was available as well (not on amazon..even the motorstorm bundle) this wouldn't be an issue. This was very short sighted on Sony's part. If you are not going to release enough bundles, they could at least have had a BC alternative available. I know two people that this affects. They were going to get the ps3 when mgs4 came out. Since they care about BC, they now have to wait for more bundles or for the 80 gig to come back out..... |

Under estimated. It's a shame really. I think the BC issue may have helped 'transitionally' to offer a lower price point entry into next gen gaming. But the 40GB w/o BC is still better than the XBox 360 'Arcade' with no hard drive.
What kills me is now BC has become expected for PS consumers. There was no way I was getting one without BC (I have 2 60GB's so I am cool - even though they can be loud at times ![]() Most PS2 converters want and need BC. Sure you can plug in your PS2 to handle things - but that is a pain. My son doesn't mind dragging the PS2 out of the closet to plug in for his room (His room is flooded with a Wii & Gamecube with Game boy player so something has to come unplugged) but there is no way I am digging around my 'Man Cave' to do it. Sure spoiled - but BC is a value add feature to the product. An emulater would be nice, but having it built in is nicer. Especially today out of the box. But I do think more people will pick up MGS4 & any version of a PS3 they can. Too bad it is not BC or the bundle. |

I bought the 40GB PS3 last week through the Wal-Mart promo. I didn't want to wait for the 80GB bundle anyways.
First, I don't care about the backwards compatibility to PS2. I have only a couple games I would want to play anyways (God of War 2 and Metal Gear Solid 1-3). Plus, I'm fairly certain that after seeing the graphics of Metal Gear Solid 4, I'm not going back to previous-gen games. Second, I can upgrade the harddrive without breaking a sweat. I'm just waiting for the hard drive to arrive, and then I'll have a 160GB PS3. backwards compatibility is just something people THINK they need. Even with the XBOX 360, I only played Halo 2 on it for 2 nights, prior to the Halo 3 release. I may be the exception, but I don't think a lot of people really play old games on a new system. I'd rather play the latest and greatest. I think backwards compatibility will be pushed out by Christmas, as Sony would only hurt themselves if it doesn't have that capability by the Christmas season. |

Tomb Raider Anniversary, and Twisted Metal Head on (twisted edition) are two main reasons. oh... and I bought 6 games from a friend for $30. Zone of enders Psi Ops XIII Killer 7 Jak2 and the Suffering. Without BC I would have had to indian give my Ps2 and my brother wouldn't be enjoying the GOW games. I think your opinion is closer to the truth for last generation. (ps1 to ps2). There was a bigger difference graphically then, than now. Also, some games don't even make it to the ps3. They come out on the 360 and ps2. They may not be graphically intensive, but they are games none the less that wouldn't be able to play otherwise. |

The 80GB models have a number of other nice features not found on the 40GB units: 4 USB ports instead of just 2, three flash card slots, SACD compatibility, emulation for PS2 and PS games. Those features, the doubled hard disc capacity, a Dual Shock 3 controller and a bundled game are worth the extra $100 on the price tag. Sony definitely underestimated the demand for the MGS4 80GB PS3 bundle. They need to make quite a few more. Every store that carried the 80GB PS3 MGS4 bundle sold out immediately. All of those stores have ample supplies of 40GB systems just laying around. I think the stores stocked up on a lot of 40GB systems and are now glutted with them. |

It's the best deal because
1. 40 extra gigabytes -$20-$30 2. Dualshock 3 -$5 3. Free game -$60 4. Free Downloadable game -$10 5. PS2 compatibility So its the same price as the 40GB with a game, but with all the extra stuff, plus the BEST game for PS3. People are dumb to buy a 40GB now. |

This should make a few of you chuckle...
The whole release week of MGS4, starting on that MONDAY before the Thursday release... Everywhere I went, they had these MGS4 bundles in stock and out on shelves. I could have bought probably over 30 of them just following my normal shopping visits to some retailers. They were available everywhere. I haven't had too many reasons to visit these stores lately so I'm not sure if they are still in stock, but I did see one at the local Walmart late last week. Irony. |

honestly, I think the walmart deal can't be beat, especially since the games I played on my PS2 I barely played.
For 500.00 I got... PS3 40gb 1 Game (traded for GTA IV)+$30 1 BD (I am Legend) $100 GC - With that I bought: 1 DS3 Controller 2 BD - Transporter 1 &2 +$5.00 tax I got real tired of my ps2 games, I traded em all in, Except for the AO version of GTA: SA (Gamestop wouldn't take it) So in total I spent maybe $35 total extra... I bought CoD at Game stop with my trade in money, in all, I don't care about BC, I am just happy I have the system, and all that it can be used for! |
