Most of us like the Blu case, and if they were to change it... there would be hell to pay.

Sorry if this pisses off anyone, but the standard Blu-ray case design is frankly nothing special. It's a glorified Amary case. It doesn't lend itself at all to include bundled printed materials. Most movies I buy on Blu-ray in those cases have nothing more than some spam leaflet from the movie studio that's just garbage can fodder. It's rare to get any bonus printed stuff related to the movie included in such cases -mainly because the case design doesn't work on fitting in such stuff.

I see no reason why every single movie has to have the same damned case design. The ones who demand to have that uniform look to their movie collection simply must have some O.C.D. issues they need to confront. That's how I see it. Other opinions may vary. I will NOT change mine. Those who want to argue with me on it can just go pound sand. I will not be made to change how I feel on this. Just putting it out there in advance. Flames will be ignored.

When DVD was first hitting its prime, some good custom case designs were introduced. I really loved the 2-disc case design for Fight Club. The artwork inside and out was great and it has a slot design good enough to accommodate the "how to start a fight" booklet. That case design was the perfect answer to Warner Bros.' snapper/crapper paperboard cases and the usual yet boring Amaray DVD case designs. The original Fight Club case really signaled that the DVD format had truly arrived and could be a LOT more special than any VHS release. I think certain Blu-ray releases should be free to do the same sort of thing.

Having every movie case look the same is BORING.
I agree. Creativity shouldn't start and end with the movie itself. For a "special" film, the studios should feel free to work "outside the box".

That said, the standard Blu cases for the majority of releases is OK as it allows for easy visual differentiation as consumer awareness of the format is growing.

I like my blu cases personally... and having the PS3 cases in the same size (well... thicker... but still) makes it all look nice

I hate the dvd cases. The blu ray cases are awesome. I like the blue. Now one thing I do miss from dvd cases are your examples like the lord of the rings. Not necessarily the different colors, but the specially designed card board cases, that's one thing we haven't gotten with blu ray yet unfortunately. I hope we do soon. They could even still have the blue stripe at the top and I wouldn't mind, I just miss those special edition cases. The only attempt that has been made at this for blu ray are the coffee table ones by warner bros. which I haven't seen up close yet, but am hoping they are cool. Too bad they haven't done it to any movies worth owning.

The coffee table books released by Warner are all classics with great reputations. Not sure what kind of mindless crap you are waiting for...

its almost like you're looking to get flamed and get people riled up.
Nope.

I am simply 100% absolutely tired of the ignorant stands put down by so many people on this board in defense of the standard, arguably crappy Blu-ray case. Yeah, it may be "Blu" but it is still kind of crappy.

These people defend it as if it is something perfect when it is really something very far from perfect.

Let's get something straight outright. HD-DVD is dead. So there is no threat from there, or from DVD on the matter of Blu-ray case design. So there is absolutely no point in any militant Blu-ray geek to get his panties in a twist over someone calling Blu-ray case design into question. There is NO arguing this. Some of the folks who are holding onto the "all my Blu-ray cases need to look the same" need to let go on this point.

Next thing, exactly how does anyone defend the limits of the standard Blu-ray case design? Answer: they do not bother to ever even try to defend it at all. They just throw out some blather about how they want their movie collection to look uniform or some other kind of goofy crap like that and then move on to flame away in some other discussion. I'm not having any of that.

As for the claims that I'm looking to get flamed over this, I just laugh out loud. Please. It is a very LAME point to flame someone like me over. I'll fully stand by my accusations of the "my movie collection must look uniform" geeky crowd as being strangely O.C.D. afflicted. There is NO BENEFIT to Blu-ray customers on maintaining some stupidly militant policy on such a grossly limited functioning case design. It's crap. Even if it is Blue it is still CRAP. I think it is time for the movie studios to make some improvement on it. Especially with the high price premiums we have to pay for these movies on Blu-ray.

If we're going to be expected to pay upwards of $30 per movie then Hollywood will have to manage a little more than the same old usual crap when trying to sell it to us. Otherwise, the value isn't going to be worth more than a rental.

ya know, you keep saying how "geeky" it is to want to have uniform blu cases in your collection. but many could argue that having little leaflets and graphic novels and stickers and crap included with your movies is "geeky" as well.

you have a whole lot of opinion in your posts. so i repeat. go ahead and keep your opinion and your stance on the matter. but maybe dont call out and insult other members who find the case design fine the way they are "geeky" or having O.C.D.

and lastly, if the studios wanted to put leaflets in the blu-ray cases, then i dont see anything hindering them from doing so. its not like the current blu cases are unable to accomodate stuff like that. they just have to make the inserts smaller in dimensions. big deal. cds are even smaller with their leaflets.

stop getting all riled up because only 2 people agree with you on this subject. it would seem nobody here is as ignorant on their defense of the matter than you.

Well, with over 600 DVD's I would have loved to have a little more uniformity. I see myself buying Blu-rays at roughly the same rate, so a little uniformity is good when your collection grows over 50 or so movies. How about they keep the Blu cases and you people who like "novelty" cases give you the option to send off for them. That way if you want your Transformer case to change into a robot to get the movie out, your happy. And everyone else who just wants to get to the movie doesn't need 100 sq. ft. of space for their collection.

I hope they stay with the "Blu" cases. I don't like the WB coffee book "cases" , but I still have "Natural born killers" on my 'rack'

Blu-ray cases have the same limits has the standard DVD Cases, so why would anyone need to defend them? Studios could easily add a booklet to the case, there is room for it. And as someone else said, size is not a problem either, because CDs have the booklets and they're smaller.

I prefer the current cases, because they are small and I can fit more of them on my shelves.

If studios really want the make they’re movies look different. The best way to make everyone happy, would be to make the movie/TV show the same way they made Lost: Season 3. Have a big cardboard box with all the artwork and inside have the Blu-ray case. That way those who like the uniform look can throw away the cardboard box and just have the Blu-ray cases and those you like the special artwork and extras can keep it all.

That is one of my main reasons for the uniform cases, they take up less space which is actually one of the reasons they gave for going Blu in the VERY beginning. I have no desire for a bunch of bulky cases on my shelves and I also could care less about what is packed inside the case other than the movie itself, that is what it comes down to after all, the movie.

I have no problems with people who enjoy all the extra fancy cases packed with odds and ends, but I would prefer they were sold separately for people who want to have the choice. My 145 Blu ray movie collection takes up a nice compact amount of space compared to all my dvds and that is just the way I like it.

I quite like the blue cases - though a darker blue might be better (and they make it easier to separate the Blu-ray discs from the DVDs etc.

But I've got 2 types of Blu-ray cases - thin ones and thick ones. The thin ones have a side thing that opens up that the thicker ones don't have, but the thin ones, while taking up less room than the thicker ones (which is good), also appear to be more fragile - especially the side thing that opens up. I haven't had one break yet but it seems more likely than with the thicker ones. Also, the thinner ones with the side flap are less easy to open/close than the thicker ones.

"Limited functioning case design?"

Put disc in, take disc out. As long as it stays in place and comes out ok, what else do you want a case to do?

Be very easy to open and close, be as thin as possible (to take up the least amount of space), protect the disc(s) inside, be reliable, be very robust (just in case I stand on it ), make it easy to see the title of the disc (printed in a standard way on the side), have good artwork, and be a nice colour (like dark blue),

Does it really matter what the case looks like? Buy a closing storage cabinet and the entire problem is solved. That's what I did for my ugly looking DVD cases, worked wonders, I don't have to see the mish mash of multiple colours and designs.

Of course I've yet to buy a movie for the case, that seems like a waste of money to me, I buy it for the movie inside the case. The case could be day glow yellow and have fuschia green polka dots on it for all I care.
