I'd take it any day over Red Dragon.

Here’s what I wrote about that very issue on X/Twitter:

“I grant it can be frustrating to adapt to an angle of ‘monsters are made’ when THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS so chillingly implies they’re simply born that way, but once you accept its thesis for what it is, #HannibalRising isn’t half bad at contextualizing the madness of Dr. Lecter.”

So while I agree with you it probably would’ve been better to leave the stone of Lecter’s past unturned, what they came up with when they did turn it over has merit.

Never heard of the Wolf Creek release. Is it a release outside of US?

Do you have a link?

I typed in Hannibal Rising in the search section of this forum and only the steelbook comes up. I did not know there was a bluray import when I found it used.

Manhunter was far better and Brian Cox was excellent as the first Hannibal.

But it's always nice seeing Hopkins reprise his role in the prequel and sequel.

I actually enjoy this movie. I was so glad Lionsgate finally released it on Blu-ray in the states.

I was mistaken. There are releases in the UK and Australia which say they are region free. But now there is the Walmart steelbook here.

That's probably the one I got that was an import.

I actually like Red Dragon, especially because it’s a proper prequel to Silence, and I might be alone on this one but I’m not big on William Petersen as Graham.

Manhunter is more visually appealing but Red Dragon had the better acting performances.

For me, I do find William Petersen a more compelling performer in this role than Edward Norton but I still greatly prefer RED DRAGON over MANHUNTER because it’s far more respectful to the original, awesome novel. All the flashy “style over substance” liberties MANHUNTER takes with the source material have always rubbed me the wrong way.

I feel like “Hannibal Rising” has gotten better with age. It was so different that it was a little polarizing when it was released, but I’ve rewatched it several times throughout the years and find myself enjoying and appreciating it more each time. As other posters have mentioned, I find it much better than the cash-grab, “Red Dragon,” which unlike HR, has not aged well at all!

Yeah "Red Dragon" is a much better representation of the book. "Manhunter" wants to center the focus around Will a bit too much. It straight-up strips out Dolarhyde completely from the first half of the narrative. Whereas Dragon is much more concerned with illustrating the tortured soul elements of Dolarhyde that you see in the book. It spreads it's attention a bit better between Will and Dolarhyde than "Manhunter" does. You also get a good deal more Lecter in "Red Dragon". That's a situation where "Manhunter" is more accurate to the book, cause he's only in like 3 scenes in that, but it's more Hopkins, so it's still a point for "Red Dragon" all the same.

Heartily agreed. Perhaps if the main character was named anything other than ‘Hannibal Lector’ people would have appreciated the film on its own merits more?

It still amuses me, that on the Commentary, Martha De Laurentis, mentions every Director in the film Franchise except for Brett Ratner, she mentions Michael Mann, but leaves Ratner out.

I've always been intrigued by that.
