yep, also for the dvr you will need an optical cable as I do not believe it will output video over component and audio over hdmi simultaneously. (not needed anyways, no lossless audio from cable channels)

From what I'm seeing, you need to use an HDMI cable for audio and picture to your receiver and to your TV for the PS3. You'll also need to use a component cable for video on your DVR and another cable for audio.

After reading the insanity of this thread, it is my opinion that the op needs a new tv! I mean it is a little ridiculous to send the audio over HDMI from the PS3 and the video over composite cables. You must have one heck of a speaker/sub combo to not care about the picture quality.

Right now I have the sound from the DVR but no picture.
As far as the PS3, I have neither sound or picture, wtf am I doing wrong?

This HD thing is kinda new for me and I'm realizing that it is like the saying: "Give him a hand and he'll take the arm".
My point is, I bought a PS3 to have a Blu Ray player. Then I found out that to have great sound and picture I needed HDMI. So I thought, great! I'll just buy a new receiver, it's overdue, anyway. Thinking that actually the receiver would process and convert, I guess, the picture since my TV does NOT have HDMI but I found out in THIS VERY thread that it does not. So of course I now know I need a new TV and this is actually what I said in the 3rd post I think.
So yeah, I first thought a PS3 was enough, then I found out I needed a receiver and now a TV. And don't even get me started on speakers!

ERR firstly its not insane, the OP has a problem and we are here to help not bash, second he said component not composite, and the the OP already said he wants a new TV, a lot of people can't buy all the kit at the same time. Besides audio is a much bigger part of the experience than it used to be with DVD

I don't really care about the PQ

My "order of importance" when selecting a film....

First by a LONG SHOT:: Movie Quality (plot etc.... the ACTUAL MOVIE)

SECOND::: Audio Quality...

Lastly, but not NEARLY as important as audio quality::: Picture quality..

Ok, everything works now.
Turns out the HDMI cable I got from monoprice is a bad one. Good thing I ordered more than one.
LAST question though
Can I have an Optical plugged in the DVD input on the receiver and a HDMI in the DVD input?
This is what I did, so when the PS3 is on, the sound goes thru the HDMI with DVD selected as the source and when I watch a DVD on my DVD player the sound goes thru the Optical thru the DVD source.
The priority for the sound is thru the HDMI, right? So I'll always get the lossless or HD sound, right?

not sure what it'd default to.... but the receiver, or monitor may tell you what signal it's getting.... so I'd just do a "test" to find out.

If I have both the PS3 and the DVD player on, the default sound I hear is from the PS3 and if I turn it off then I hear the sound from the DVD player.
When I tried a BD the display on screen said Linear PCM 5.1 so that's good, right?
And I guess I lied since I have one more question just to make sure.
Since I only have 5 speakers my surrounds should be plugged in the surrounds, not the back surrounds, right?
