x's 10.... if you want to just watch movies, then go ahead and shell out close to 1 grand. But if you want to do all of the above and get a pretty good BR player, then buy a PS3.

What do those features have to do with blu-ray?
0/nothing.

What about the hugh power consumption vs a stand alone player.
What about the heat it emits acting like a small blower dryer in the AV rack?
What about the high speed fan noise when it kicks in?
How about it's not 19in and looks out of place like a Bose gimicy AV component and you can't stack any other AV components on it.
What about the pinch roller grabbers instead of a disc tray?
No standard remote.(Yes, you can buy one for extra but then that raises the price.)
No IR remote capabilities to use Universal remote.(Yes, you can buy one for extra but then that raises the price too.)

The Ps3 is so great.

Now HDPlasma you dont want to upset the PS3 guys out there do you? Just kidding but I agree with what you said. The reasons you stated are what kept me from getting a PS3.

Don't buy it! I don't think it's supported by Phillips anymore. This should be their only Blu-ray player (if I understand it). Have a look at the Amazon reviews.

do you really conserve power (consciously) in your household? or is this just a talking point you read on a website?

I have two PS3's (20gb and 40gb) neither of them act like a small blow dryer.

again, have never had this "problem" you speak of.

why again does it have to be 19 inches? ...I still have a VHS player that looks outta place...who cares once lights go down.

why on earth would you stack AV components on one another?

is it fair to say you've never owned a PS3?

Those are all horrible nitpicky reasons that pretty much don't mean squat. And just like the guy said above.....who wants to stack components on each other? My entertainment center has separate actual solid wood shelves. Stacking components....lulz.

BD30: player uses 25W energy while playing a Blu Ray disc.

PS3 40go: Consumes 135W of energy while playing a Blu Ray disc
PS3 60&80go: Consumes 180W of energy while playing a Blu Ray disc

PS3 max power consumption:
-------------------------------
40GB - 280W
60GB & 80GB - 380W - that's more than most 50" LCD HDTV's.

When the PS3 consumes 5-7 times more more power than a stand alone, then ya, I pay attention.

Quote:

Sorry to hear you need 2. Most of us only need one stand alone player.

Quote:
again, have never had this "problem" you speak of.
You got to be kidding that you haven't heard the high speed fan kick in.
So maybe you got one of the "good" ones or maybe the high speed fan is broke?

Quote:

Glad to hear your VHS player and PS3 complete your AV rack.

Quote:
pinch roller grabbers? never heard of this word before. Neither has google.
Whatever they are called, they physically touch the disc and who knows what collects on them that may scratch or damage discs.

Quote:
$20 remote.
Last time I checked, the PS3 remote is $24.99+tax.
So, that brings the price of the PS3 to $425.

$20 IR
So, that brings the price of the PS3 to $420.

Both of these options must be purchased SEPERATELY and not included with the player like the stand alones.

Quote:
is it fair to say you've never owned a PS3?
Thought about it but never could pull the trigger to make the purchase.
A few of my friends have them but they mainly play games and blu-ray is just a bonus but really doesn't matter since they don't have HDTV's.
So no, I don't own one but seen them in action enough for me to say no to the PS3 for a blu-ray player with the drawbacks I mentioned.

I'll point out the irony to your statement.

You've seen the PS3 in action at a friend's house who doesn't even have an HDTV?

...and you weren't impressed?

Lets put this little nitpicking to the side. The OP asked for a good player for around $400...instead of critiquing the world, why not offer your choice?

Good player for around $400 or less?

If you don't play games at all or have no interest in other media downloads to your HDTV .. then a standalone makes sense on the power front.

If you want to play games your going to be buying a console as well..unless your going to save $400 in electricity during the time you watch movies ..having both would be more expensive. With multiple TV rooms now also multiple by x.

Not true for the 80GB produced since holiday of this year. They are the same as the 40GB now.

That's because it does more than a 50" LCD. The average consumption is what counts not the max.

That can happen on the 60GB with Folding@Home and DVD upscaling. Never heard it otherwise.. or on the 40GB or 80Gb for either of the previous scenarios - but our 80Gb was one of the holiday ones not an older one.

Unless you have proof of something being reported that's just FUD. The brush on the slot prevents dust getting inside the drive etc ... something a tray design doesn't do. Trays are also susceptible to damage from your kids leaning and pressing on them too hard .. something that the slot-loading method eliminates.

It's optional .. but if you want it or prefer it over the controller .. you can often pick it up for 19.99 at BB.

Again it's optional but is important to some folks. After using blu-tooth I personally want to throw every IR device into the bottom of the ocean. A converter from IR to a universal blu-tooth remote for all my old devices would garner my dollars.

At least we agree they are options and not must purchases.

And we will be picking up a standalone for the analog outs. The original intent was to upgrade the receiver to HDMI but they wanted way too much for the upgrade. Standalone it is.

I've got 12' cathedral ceilings and my entertainment center holds a 60" LCD TV. I don't think they had those in 1980.
