I don't know exactly what you mean by dumbed down, are they/can they be fast foody? yes, dumbed down no. If anything one would expect them to get better as the studio engineers and hardware manufacturers learn more about the format and the rush cools. That's what we should rightfully expect, big entertainment companies don't always follow. That they got Blade Runner right says something.

When did Blu-ray become the format of choice ?

I doubt it will happen though

And the funny thing is that the original post of this thread was back in 2008 when lots of people had no idea what bluray is.
There is still tons of people that don't know.
I was at blockbuster two weeks ago and one guy had a dvd and a bluray to rent and the cashier asked him why is he renting a dvd since he has a bluray with him and he had no idea what the cashier was talking about. He even had a friend with him and that friend had no idea.
So it is funny that this thread was more than 2 year ago
lol

"Adoption" is a slow process.....

Two neighbors recently (within a few months) both got Blu-ray players.

Neighbor 1) Has an old CRT, and I have no idea what types of connections, with a 3 speaker bose system that she uses for Pandora and Netflix....

Neighbor 1) Got a new HDTV shortly after getting the Blu-ray player, and uses it exclusively for Netflix.

Neither one (as I talked to both on Monday) have any plans to rent or buy Blu-rays, and neither one had watched a Blu-ray on their BD player....

The one with the CRT (not HD, very old one actually) said she won't get a new T.V. until that one breaks.

BD players are becoming the best "option" for many people, to get features they want, even if Blu-ray playability isn't one of them.

3 years ago, they would have bought a RoKu box or whatever it is, if BD players were still around $300, but now it's $125 or so to get a BD player that does other stuff too, so if a DVD player breaks, it's either "hey here's $50 for a DVD player" or "Hey, for $125 this one streams Netflix and Pandora and internet stuff to our T.V. and it plays these High definition discs too"

That's the ticket indeed. The fact that name brand BD players are down around $100-150 is one thing. However, once you add the fact that they stream Netflix, VUDU, and Pandora on top of unpconverting your DVDs it makes absolutely no sense to buy a DVD player. I imagine that DVD player manufacturing will gradually slow down over the next few years except for the Chinese manufactured off-brand el cheapos. Give another five years and the studios will probably stop producing DVD only editions and will continue to shift to BD/DVD/DC on virtually every new release. Maybe BD will be the last physical format, but I sure hope not. I am hoping that there will be one more physical format that can house 2K, 4K, and even 8K transfers, but then I am just dreaming.

Yeah.. "Vudu" or whatever it is.... that's the other thing.

Both of their husbands are "I.T." guys, and neither of their homes have cable/satellite and another huge selling point for them was either Vudu or Hulu or whatever.

Something I don't really have an interest in, but the fact that these things just do SO MUCH now, have really aided adoption.

Disc sales may still not be ending DVD anytime soon, but I bet there are quite a few people like this who have BD players but don't buy media at all (aside from the children's DVDs they buy)
