But in Box 4/5's case, it was Warner having just taken over Rhino, and the new TV Boxset division execs not, er...quite backgrounded in their MSTie lore, going with the obvious "Well, like, it was on the Sci-Fi channel!" memory, and being unaware that the '89-'95 Comedy Central/Joel Hodgson years even existed...
Remember quite a bit of poopie hitting the fan with Warner, before they eventually caught on, listened to their fan base and brought more diversity into the sets with #6.

Some of my favorite episodes are the Gamera and Godzilla ones, too bad we won't see those on official DVDs. As for the ones you can get a hold of to name a few, Pod People, Mitchell, Cave Dwellers, Santa Clause Conquers the Martians, and Prince of Space absolutely kill me.

Their shorts are great too. Because of watching the show as a little kid, getting used to laughing at the ridiculous shorts, they used to show us the same movies in elementary school on the reel-to-reel projector. Ones about hygene, posture, how farms are run, etc. I used to MSTie and riff during them in my 1st grade class, and got in trouble a few times.

The best episode ever is "Prince of Space". I laugh until it hurts, then laugh some more every time I see that one. The whole cast was on their A-game during that one. Classic.

Also "Parts: The Clonus Horror" is awesome. Michael Bay's "The Island" stole a lot from that movie.

"Attack of the the Eye Creatures" (yes: there were 2 "the's" in the title) scared the crap out of my 5 year old cousin. Even though everyone else was cracking up.

Prince of space rocks, my favorite was one with Kathy Ireland beneath L.A.. Mitchell, and Eegah! rank as well

Manos was absolutely the worst.

Prince of space is a great one, a true mystie classic!

It's funny you mention the Island, b/c we saw Parts the Clonus Horror after we saw the Island, and yes, it is a total ripoff.

Just watched Godzilla vs. Megalon this weekend! A classic mystie, a must see.

"Godzilla swims the English Channel!"

Great stuff

There's an interview on the disk with "Parts" director Robert Fiveson, who wasn't even aware of "The Island", if not for loyal MST3K fans (who already knew PtCH by heart) spotting the similarities and tipping him off.

(And while the first timers are going off on boxset, don't forget that Rhino originally put the episodes out on single disks in the early days--
Otherwise, one might deprive themselves of the experience of watching "Wild World of Batwoman", a truly words-fail experience. )

MST3K is one of my all time favorites. I wish that someone would pick up reruns while I try to compile the series to DVD.

I have all or a major majority of the episodes. They are fun to watch. Rocketship XM has some really hysterical commentary on it. The Crawling Eye is another good one.

If you are missing any episodes, check out this site:

http://www.mst3k.org/

I've got every single episode, except for season 0. I buy all the rhino releases to support the cause, but the quality of these on the site are the best you're going to find right now.

I'll have to watch that interview, thanks for the heads up.

Oh yes, you'd have missed the wild wild world of batwoman! Great flick! Batwoman's mask actually looks like something out of mardi gras!

Out of the singles, there are the obivious gems: Eegah and Manos, but after those and Batwoman, here's a few of my favorites from the single releases.

Hellcats
Mitchell - people MUST see this, great movie and they pick on Joe Don all through the film
Brain that Wouldn't Die

And "I Accuse My Parents": Silly pokes at the "30's social-scare" genre, without giving into the temptation of cheap/lame Reefer Madness gags.

I am a fan of MST3K! But also riffrax.
For those who don't know, Rifftrax is by the same guys, and it is an audio track that you download (and pay for) from their site and play while you watch a movie. You just rent or buy the DVD/Blu-ray and hook up an ipod or computer to some speakers. They give you the queues to keep the 2 tracks lined up (you play the movie sounds too) and they add commentary. They are hilarious!
Check it out, you will be glad you did. I was successful watching 300, 5th Element, Eragon, and more on Blu-ray and DVD with Rifftrax. Heck, I wouldn't even watch Eragon if it wasn't for rifftrax, and now everytime I see the name I keep thinking to myslf "E-ragon, for all your ragon needs".

A good point to bring up rifftrax, I've been on the fence about getting these and playing them while watching the movies. Oddly enough, I own alot of the movies they bash but oh well, I'm a fan of cinema and I love MST3k, so this is the natural progression.

I just went to their site to inquire about syncing the mp3 with the movie. It doesn't seem too bad. I'll probably just use my laptop as I don't have a portable player.

I'll post my thoughts on Cinematic Titanic when I get the DVD's in, I ordered the 3 they offer. We'll see if they still have the magic.

The goodness that was MST3K was that they found these horror movies and turned them into something fun.

I'm interested in looking up newer horror movies to see if rifftrax has razed them or not. Maybe in the future they will, I can't recall off hand if they raz the newer horror movies or just mainstream.

The general explanation is that "The Joel era heckled bad movies, the Mike era school-bullied them....And high-school bullied them, at that."

Which is why the Cinematic Titanic (from, quote, "the original creators of MST3K!", seeing as Mike Nelson and Kevin Murphy technically don't own any royalty rights to the original series and don't have a paying gig) sticks to good old-fashioned bizarre 50's/60's fests like "Doomsday Machine" and "Wasp Woman"--
While RiffTrax obsessively pursues LOTR, the Matrix, Spiderman 3, Transformers, X-Men, all ten Star Trek movies, and anything else that they imagine might attract geeky comic-book fans who, like, go to conventions in funny ears, 'n stuff.

There's been many conversations like, are you a Joel or Mike person?
, myself, I like what each brings to the table. I do know that Mike was listed as the head writer in many of the episodes during the Joel era.

The wife and I like the older movies, in fact just the other night we were discussing that if it weren't for MST3k, we wouldn't have seen most of them.

I like the old movie feel, but we also talked about how some newer movies would benefit from a MST3K infusion of sarcasm. I welcome both sides of the coin, it's win win!
