Let's see, some of the first US DVD releases were in 1997....

Star wars altered original trilogy was released DVD in 2004....

The unaltered original trilogy was released on DVD in 2006....

Lucas waited approximately 7 years after the format was introduced, if history repeats itself, we have some time to wait yet...

Site is blocked so I can't read it, but from responses I can assume it's about a boxset for ep. 1-3? There is no such boxset out there yet, those movies were released individually so I don't know where all the whining is coming from. Boxset was due.

Milking the franchise? hehehe I believe Lucas has enough money, he doesn't need to "milk the franchise"

Sometimes I wonder if George Lucas is just waiting for the original fan base to die off like they are all unworthy schmucks, or something. Here is a man who would probably buy Disney just to use the vault.

That was because he (said that he) wanted to devote time to do it himself, but was busy doing the prequel movies at the time. No such excuse this time since his involvement with the 3D and TV projects isn't as direct.

I'm a bit mystified at the milking comments... are they supposed to just keep releasing the same packaging? That's marketing 101... I don't think it's intended that anyone rebuy this new set if they already have it on DVD. Despite umpteen releases on VHS, they would still sell out, woudln't they, which necessitated a new release?

I don't buy DVD anymore, of course, so wouldn't touch these with a 10 foot pole. I do very much hope to get all 6 movies on Blu-ray, though. The DVDs have Dolby EX, so I imagine, we'll see TrueHD... hopefully at least 6.1 to match the Dolby EX but I would love 7.1 LPCM!

I hope you're correct, only time will tell if he makes an excuse.

Make that carrot sweeter!

I've only got 1 set of the VHS's and 1 set of the DVD's. Still have both of them, we can all agree they will eventually come to blu, just when that will happen...

If he does not include the original versions (unaltered) on blu - remastered with at least 5.1 sound......that will prompt me to not buy them and just play my DVD copies. If you recall, the versions in the best buy tin where 2.0, non-anamorphic, not really cleaned up at all...

George has no logic whatsoever.....I have no need for this...I will only buy Star Wars if it's on Blu..Hopefully, for our benefit...the new dvd sets don't move too fast. Then Lucas will get it through his thick head that we want it on the new format. Completely ridiculous to release SW on DVD AGAIN!

Likewise, well I got the last THX box but didn't bother with the special editions on VHS. Don't have a clue where my VHS are, of course.... probably in a box in the garage. I did buy a set of bootleg DVD rips of the special editions somewhere around 2000-2001 IIRC.

Right. Given LFL's repeated statements on the matter, I really wouldn't expect the original unaltered versions in any other form than that. If anything, that's evidence to the contrary of milking, since he could be releasing umpteen versions: 1977 original release version.... 1980, Ep IV version, etc etc and they stand on a relatively consistent platform ever since the THX releases that it was the last time those would be released in their original form.

I wonder when George is gonna release the re-done Episode I with the CG Yoda. Not that I particularly want to see Episode I again, but he's been sitting on it for years.

Had to bump this three year old "speculatin" thread. Interesting to read. On a side note, I may have to break down and buy 1-3 to show some family before the Blu hits later this year.

Would it be a good time to mention I haven't seen any of the Star Wars outside of anything after the '90s?

Rent? Not sure of online rentals are an option (need to check Apple), otherwise it is finding them for rent and at a price that I might as well buy them by the time you figure in the rental fees for multiple days, gas, and time.

Hmm do you think if Lucas released a new edition of the VHS, that there would be people to buy it ?

I would, I own a VHS, LaserDisc, Beta Max, and two different DVD sets. My dream would be to own every version of Star Wars ever released. I am still pissed Revenge of the Sith never got a VHS release, it stands as the only Star Wars film to not get one but then again Phantom Menace is the only one to get a Laser Disc release so it is a fair trade off.

Not to sound rude but damn you must be ignorant. I mean to say that this year I would say maybe you got a point but to say that TWO YEARS into Blu Ray you have got to be seriously out of touch.
