2) Epic Failure
On one of the blogs, there was a (supposedly) discarded earlier draft of the screenplay that gives us a few clues about what remnants might stay in the final version--

To spare you reading the whole thing, the pertinent highlights (of the version we're not officially getting):
- The setting is Earth, but a catastrophically re-geographized Earth after some "ancient disaster"
- Legend has it that Piccolo Sr. was the disaster, but was so long ago, most pass it off as superstition, and just blame the science of tectonic plates,
- Goku, commuting from his grandpa's house to college, is zero-to-hero "misunderstood" because he still believes his grandpa's stories about ancient aliens trying to destroy the world singlehandedly,
- Bulma is the only one to believe him, since both are searching for the Dragon Balls,
- Mai is working on her own to bring back the Balls for Emperor Pilaf (who probably won't show up in the final version),
- The early-script doesn't even contain the Tournament, or Master Mutaito facing Piccolo before, and only has the big showdown occurring at an ancient temple, proving that all the "legends" really were correct, etc.

I'm guessing rewrites tried to take it closer to the Tournament storyline of the source material, but that's not to assume that every script-draft element was dropped in the process...

Ah jeez, I don't know what to think of this movie anymore! I also saw some footage on the internet from some person's phone that showed (i think) Bulma fighting Mai in the tournament.

Hey, all I said was, that was the version we're NOT getting--
(The early-draft had more dropped cameo characters, including Chichi's dad, which Jamie Chung already confirmed isn't showing up in this one.)
And that the shots of an eclipse and of Piccolo inside what looks like a Temple building looked like they were borrowed ideas from the early-draft, but were no longer the main climax of the story.

The new rewrite restored the Tournament version of the Goku vs. Piccolo arc, added a few semi-final battles for fan-service (including the Chichi vs. Mai fight you saw on Youtube), and added more backstory to Roshi's explanation of how Piccolo was defeated the first time--
Which brings it more into line with the anime story arc. (As we already know from Ernie Hudson cast as Mutaito...Nooo, he's not "playing Mr. Popo 'cause he's black".)

Think of the final version more as repaired damage, rather than a fully-enginered wreck.

Thanks for the link. So they are serious about a real character DB movie. I'm surprised and curious. I really liked the 508 episodes (DB, DBZ, DBGT) so I'll be sure to check out the movie hoping it's not as bad as some fear it can be.

lol Ya but i still don't know what to think of it since they've ruined Piccolo for me and the overall idea of the plot i've seen elsewhere seems to weird.

Same here. I used to love the show, but this looks like it could be horrible.

I can smell a box office bomb already with all thumbs down. Yet, the actors still get paid for it regardless.

My high-school Spanish isn't that great, but I've got a smattering of deciphering Babelfish-ese...

I mean i saw pics of Piccolo and they looked like crap, if those are wrong and the trailer shows him otherwise, then ill give the movie a shot.

From the minute this movie was announced, I was persuaded it would fail miserably and everything I've seen so far, including leaked parts of the script as well as images, haven't been able to change my mind. If anything, it only makes me believe even more that this is a total and utter distaster in the making.

The problem is that the original manga/anime series spirit is completely lost in the Hollywood adaptation. Don't get me wrong, I love Hollywood movies as much as the next guy, but it seems not one single Hollywood movie based on a story made by Japanese (or other Asian) scribes is done justice. The only one that comes a bit close is the remake of Juon (The Grudge, with Sarah Michelle Gellar), but that was only because they let the original Japanese director be the director of the remake. As far as I can remember, all other Hollywood adaptations of Japanese stories go belly-up. The list is a sad and pretty long one:
- Street Figther the Movie (based on Japanese game)
- The Ring (based on Japanese movie)
- Shall we dance (based on Japanese movie)
- Speed Racer (based on Japanese anime)
...

All of them failed to capture the spirit of the original.

Actually, if anybody bothered to read the translated Spanish article, there's a wealth of spoilers good and bad, from their
[Show spoiler]keeping Goku's full-moon transformation
to
[Show spoiler]an Iron Man-esque post-credits in-canon sequel tease
, and the fact that they got the
[Show spoiler]Kamehameha wave
just right--
But hey, if you're havin' too much fun with your lil' all-encompassing fan whines based on the same couple of pictures that were posted a month ago, fine, DON'T do your research beforehand, don't let me stop ya...
