I don't see how Sony could not offer future emulation updates. If they plan on releasing downloaded PS2 games from the playstation store as rumored, wouldn't that alienate most users?

I am getting ready to upgrade all my DVD players to BLU-RAY players in about a week, and I was strongly considering buying all PS3 machines until I learned of these cost cutting features being removed about a few month ago. I have never owned any PS1, PS2, or PS3 videogames and was interested in starting to collect PS1, PS2, and PS3 games . This move by Sony to eliminate the Super Audio CD playback and PS2 backwards compatibility from all future PS3 machines is a bad move. One use to be able to purchase one console that did everything. Now if one wants to do everything the old PS3 console did they need a separate super audio CD player, a separate PS2 machine, and a PS3 to do the same thing that the older PS3 use to do. I am not going to have 3 separate devices for every TV location.
So now I am going to purchase several standalone BLU-RAY players in the next 7-14 days instead of a PS3 machine. I would have been willing to pay $600 for a brand new 60GB PS3 that did everything if they were still made. The old 60GB PS3 was the best PS3 every made.
I will be buying several standalone BLU-RAY players for around $400 and I plan on in the future getting a Pioneer $2,200 BLU-RAY player for the main home theater room. It is so much cheaper to purchase all the new movies on BLU-RAY versus stocking a dual inventory of movies on both BLU-RAY and DVD for all the family members.
I have went threw my entire Laserdisc and DVD collection this past week and have started getting rid of any Laserdisc and DVD title that has been released on BLU-RAY as long as the BLU-RAY version is the better version. If an extended directors cut of a movie is on Laserdisc or DVD and the BLU-RAY does not have the long version of the movie, then I am keeping the long version on Laserdisc or DVD and not buying the BLU-RAY version.

Not if you're looking for a new PS3. Basically, what Sony has done is take the former 40 GB model which was never backward compatible with PS2 and put the 80GB hard drive in it in order to lower the price from 499.99 to 399.99. They also did away with the SD card slot and memory stick slot as well. You can go to Sony's Playstation web site for more info.

yeah but xboxs with new hardware (Xbox Elite) is the same price as a 40gig ps3

annnnd developers are moving to creating games for the ps3 and porting them to xbox.. anyway i still see a couple more years before we see games looking better on the ps3 rather then looking the same
