Its simple really....if your going to play alot of games, or going to always some type of static image on your screen, get LCD (yea i know burn in on plasmas is not as bad anymore, but its still there) especially if your putting it in a bright room( I've seen both in bright rooms,LCD wins)
now if your not going to do any of those things, then plasma is the king of the hill, namely pioneer kuro elite (just saying it makes my mouth water)

Lcd= glare. dead pixels. burn in
Plasma= glare. dead pixels. burn in

Not much of a difference anymore. Just go to a store and see what picture you like better...

Plasma can burn in, period.
LCD and DLP can't burn in.
My friend bought a plasma and made the mistake of watching one channel more than any other. Now he has the logo embedded in his screen. I'm not saying it will happen to everyone, just that there is an inherent risk with this if you buy a plasma.
Personally I'm looking forward to an affordable laser based TV.

Wrong. LCD can burn in, it just takes longer than other displays... I have seen many LCD monitors, displays, TVs, etc with burn in far worse than on a plasma.... but thats from very prolonged use. For example the LCD screens we use for our touchscreen Point Of Sale system at my work have the POS menus burned in, so if you use them for any other functions you can still see the menu, very dark, on the screen

I don't believe anyone has ever said they can't, but you need to understand the difference between burn-in (permanent) and image retention (temporary). In order to permanently burn-in a plasma (or LCD for that matter), you will need to leave a static image on the screen for days or longer at a time without any other content. You really have to try and permanently burn-in a quality plasma today.

You both make good points, and I can't argue with the particular situations you describe. I went with LCD so I simply would not have to worry about burn-in or retention as much. Plus, plasmas are notorious for being power hogs (though LCDs aren't much better). I would say if you mostly watch movies go with plasma. But if you are a football fan (or any other sport) you seriously should consider an LCD before a plasma. I also understand some LCDs can burn in but the time required is much larger than that of Plasmas.

From Wikipedia:
With phosphor-based electronic displays (including cathode-ray and plasma displays), the prolonged display of a menu bar or other graphical elements over time can create a permanent ghost-like image of these objects. This is due to the fact that the phosphor compounds which emit the light lose their luminosity with use. As a result, when certain areas of the display are used more frequently than others, over time the lower luminosity areas become visible to the naked eye and the result is called burn-in. While a ghost image is the most noticeable effect, a more common result is that the image quality will continuously and gradually decline as luminosity variations develop over time, resulting in a "muddy" looking picture image.

how on earth did you come to that conclusion? lcd's are horrible for watching sports or any fast moving tv program! LCD's suffer with horrid motion blur (even the 120hz sets)

plasmas do not suffer with motion blur at all! i hated watching sports on my LCD because of it!

LCD can burn in too. Just takes a lot longer.

I don't think motion blur is always an issue with LCD's, I rarely notice it. Mostly see it if I watch Nascar when they do the close ups as the cars go by, but that is only for about 2 months between Basketball and Football, when I have to find something to do while baseball is on. But I watch a ton of football and basketball, maybe I own Samsungs best made TV? IDK?

what samsung do you own?

i had the 4066f (same as the 4065f) 40" 1080p set and it was horrible with motion! I am so glad it crapped out on me and i was able to get my panny plasma! Watching the olympics on that samsung was so painful, i just stopped watching the olympics and any sporting events because of the motion blur

i even checked out 120hz sets and it looked so fake, and still did not eliminate motion blur.

I have the 4061, nothing special. Really like it must just really be what TV you actually get. Like the guy with the burn in from COD4, or the guy with 3 panny's that have dead pixels. but don't get me wrong when the camera is on the ground level and the cars go by, i get a little blur, but it really isn't that noticeable even then, only me and my dad have noticed it. Prolly cause we are looking for it.

+1. I cant find the thread (the search function doesn't work well for me, I assume I'm doing something wrong, though I can't imagine what), but someone said that Laser had not been discontinued, and that they should ship out Sep. - Dec. I'm still waiting, but I have a few months before I can get it anyway. If the Laser doesn't come out in time, I may have to go with the LED DLP. Big, affordable, and decent quality. Laser would be better, though.

Ok, well I used to be in the LCD camp, and was a total Sony fanboy (my current TV is their last production 34" widescreen tube XBR, I'd still put it up against most other LCD's/Plasmas).

However I've recently come around to Plasma - or at least one particular model - the Pioneer Kuro. It will likely be my next TV, it simply comes down to an amazing picture (and that the current model will be the last one made by Pioneer and not farmed out to Panasonic for manufacture).

However I'm still concerned by how much heat these things generate. I've witnessed it first hand and a room can quickly become uncomfortable while watching a TV.

To me it all depends. There is really great plasma and really great LCDs. I myself love the elite kuro, but well who doesn't, but ended up getting a 6 series samsung which I love. However, one thing that bugs me about my 6 series is the viewing angle sucks. At dead center the picture looks awesome including dark inky blacks as well, but even a 30 degree shift you'll notice to see the colors start to washout. According to sound&vision mag the 7 series is effected by this as well. So if I'd had to do it all over again which I am is keep the LCD for daytime viewing and getting a mitsu hc6500 projector and 106in screen for nighttime/serious movie watching. Or just maybe get the THX panny plasma.

Another vote for plasma. They're not perfect, and they won't be the best forever, but right now there're the best we got.
