Based on the screen shots at the bottom of this article, while not reference quality...the PQ would appear to be a sigificant improvement over the DVD. Also, addresses the myth that the transfer is simply a port of SD version.

Default Escape From NY, UK Version

Just read the review of Escape From NY, the UK version on DVD Beaver

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film3/blu-r...rk_blu-ray.htm

I am curious to hear fellow members’ thoughts about this release. The price on Amazon UK was too tempting to pass up so I went ahead with the purchase but was just wondering what the general consensus was about the Blu-ray.

The PQ is extremely poor, upscaled DVD quality. It isn't worth it to be honest. The German version is only slightly better, but still really poor. MGMs HD broadcast looked better, so I assume if an MGM released actually happened, it would be better.

Ouch that does not sound to promising but with MGM's financial woes I figure it will be a long time coming before they do anything.

Hmm... the review on DVD beaver looks pretty amazing to me!! Looks like it might be one of the best upgrades around.

I would have ordered it up except that I need subtitles.

I have heard mixed reviews, I would love to own both of these so I hope we get a US release eventually.

Just take a look at the dvdbeaver blu/dvd comparison. I have this disc and while it is one of the least impressive hd transfers in my collectgion, it's still a nice improvement upon the dvd release.

I agree, I really like the movie and this is probably as good as it gets for quite some time. The DVD Beaver review shed some light as to why the transfer is sub-par to begin with, 7 million budget is laughable......

Here are some comparisons. I have seen the HD broadcast and it does look like the screenshots. There is a better version out there, and I only hope it ends on Blu-ray sooner rather than later.

Maybe it looks better than the US-DVD, but even worse than the German DVD, because of crushed blacks. It's a Standard Definition upconvertion, that's a fact, never mind what Gary wrote at DVDBeaver. Just look at the screenshot comparison of the UK Blu-ray vs. the German DVD at caps-a-holic.

No offense but I do not believe in "screenshot science". I am not going to dismiss Gary's opinion because he actually watched the movie in motion. Out of curiosity how do you know that it is unconverted, source please.

I have seen the US DVD, UK Blu-ray, German Blu-ray, and HD Broadcast all in motion and the UK/GER Blu-rays are extremely poor especially compared to the HD broadcast. Everything is muddy and lacks the detail and colors that can be seen in the HD broadcast. If it isn't upscaled, it darn sure looks like it is.

I only use screenshots because they are able to partially backup my statements that A) the Blu-ray transfers (both German and UK) are ugly and B) there is something better out there. Whether or not we see it on Blu-ray is another matter entirely.

Gary believes in "screenshot science". After I mailed him the link to caps-a-holic he changed his opinion about this being an upconvert or not:

Quote:
I wanted to clear up some statements on the Net about the Blu-ray transfer simply being an upconvert of the SD Master. While it appears to be true...
The StudioCanal (Optimum/Kinowelt) Blu-ray of John Carpenter's "The Fog" is from an upconverted source, too.

From what I recall, the "HD Broadcast" version is superior to the BD.
Now which HDD did I store this cap on?

Will we ever see a better UK version of Escape from New York? The current disc looks quite bad at times. At least the DTS MA track is quite good…

Unless Studio Canal decides to release a special edition it's unlikely, better labels such as Arrow have attempted to get the rights to release Carpenter titles like EFNY, but the current rights owners for the UK are holding onto them for dear life. Personally I wouldn't expect to see another Escape release unless the mooted remake get's made.

That's a shame, Studio Canal or Arrow would have done it justice. It's probably one of my least favourite Carpenter films, but it should still have been given a better blu ray than simply an upscaled DVD transfer.

The best way for now to get proper upgrades of John carpenter's films is going region free or A.
