I am not a HUGE fan of it either. I sort of stop and watched it last month since it was going to be HD, was curious to see how it would look. Overall I have seen this movie only 3 times. Once as a rental way back in the 80's. Once on VHS sometimes maybe 15 years ago and last month.

One of my all time favorites. I do hope, when it is released on Blu, that they include both versions of the film like they did on the anniversary DVD.

Somehow I doubt that. Is Spielberg big on 3D?

I GUARANTEE that is not gonna happen. Yes, it's the 30th. Yes, it will probably come out on blu, and yes it MIGHT even get a brief theatrical re-release. But there is NO WAY Spielberg will convert this to 3D.

And therein lies the problem with wikipedia. Anyone can make up anything.

Especally considering his recent comments telling people to only watch the original version.

I haven't heard anything. I would buy it just because it's E.T., but honestly, I was never really a fan.

Why would you buy a movie you don't like?

to each his own, I guess (after all, I myself am baffled by the popularity of Harry Potter).
Just out of curiosity, what's your age? I find people my age (who saw it in theaters as a kid) almost universally love it, while people who weren't alive/too young when it came out are the ones who aren't as into it.

The same reason I bought (gulp) Avatar... There are some films that simply should be in people's collections.

If I'm not mistaken I think next year is the 30 year anniversary. Here's hoping for an announcement.

ET Blu-Ray: It’s coming. Spielberg said he wanted to poll the audience. He asked us if there was anybody in the crowd that would be disappointed if the 2002 Special Edition was not included on the Blu, if it was only the original 1982 version. He was greeted with a roaring “No!” from the crowd and said, “Well, that settles it then.” So, he strongly implied the ET Blu-Ray will be the original theatrical cut only and not even include the gun-less, penis breath-less CGI’d ET version.

On the ET SE: Spielberg said he let the immense criticism from parent groups after the theatrical release of ET get to him, which is what prompted the guns being taken out and the removal of the penis-breath line. He admitted that was a mistake and that he realized after the fact that changing the movie was “robbing the people of their memories of the movie.” He had a very hard time with that and said he confirmed what he told me in our interview that you won’t see any more digital tinkering in future releases of his films.

Wow. Spielberg just blew his buddy Lucas away in the customer service department. THIS is what listening to the fans is all about. Kudos to him.
