Hmm, i'm concerned now...It's seems at this point the problem is hit and miss...I have still not found an email address to contact BBC America's Home Video inquiries... Will there be a recall if it's an issue with only a portion of the sets?

I hope there is some solution to this. I went to the BBC america store and fired off a long email to the customer support. I asked for the email to be redirected or to send me a address to send it to if incorrect, so far i had a automated response sent to me saying due to large volumes of inquires it will be 1-2 days.
I will post the response as soon as i get it.
Is there any other scenes that people have had any problems with?

Default me too

I'm so happy I have this problem too... seriously, I thought it was my TV or my PS3... but at the exact same timecode 3:47 on the Blu-Ray version of Planet Earth I get the white flickering effect.

I posted a moderately negative review of the disc on Amazon because of this issue, and other video issues... it appears that most fly over sequences with dark portions of the video are affected. I suspect that the people who *don't* see a problem actually have the problem but don't understand what to look for...

Anyone else?

Cliff.

I'm betting that everyone with the flickering problem is viewing the Blu-Ray at 1080i.

I have this issue when I watch anything in 1080i. Doesn't happen in 720p, but since PS3 doesn't play Blu-Ray discs at 720, I have to deal with the flickering at 1080i.

I have the problem on a PS3 via HDMI viewing at 1080i on a Samsung LN-S4092D

Maybe it's time to get a 1080p set... well, now when people say there's no difference between 1080p and 1080i we can point to this disc :-P

The flickering issue is something I've been battling with every since I got my set last year. It first started with broadcast TV; anything in 720p looked great where as 1080i had a lot of flickering with whites/thin lines/darkish shadows. Heroes looks incredible but Lost looks out of control.

The problem carried over to my upscaling DVD player. If I had it set to 1080i, I would get a lot of flicker. If I had it set to 720p, not so much.

The problem continues with the PS3. I've only watched a few Blu-Ray movies but so far I've found the problem mostly with Planet Earth and The Prestige, but I am sure as I watch more, I'll experience more of it.

It's not a big deal in the big picture of things (no pun intended), but it freakin sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I've researched the issue a lot and the only thing I can find is this:

Sounds like interlace artifacts to me, probably due to poor deinterlacer performance. A number of Samsung 2006 LCDs were known for their poor performance with 1080i signals. The 3241D wasn't tested, but the 3251D failed both tests.

http://www.hometheatermag.com/hookm...hook/index.html

If you are using a cable STB/DVR, I would try setting its output to 720p. DVD and Blu-ray playback might be preferable at 720p as well.

If you decide to purchase a new TV to address this issue, you might want to read this post for background information.

Let me put your mind at ease chawknz, I doubt it's your TV, i've got a mitsubishi 1080p set, and i've set it to 1080i and back and it happens with both settings. As for your issues with LOST, that's where it gets fishy, my broadcast looks perfectly fine, which cable provider are you with?

But not to get too much off the subject, this issue is a big problem and i'm sure alot of you are upset, me especially for paying 100 bucks at best buy for it.... I would never drop that much on a blu ray set just to bring it home and get horrible picture problems...

Thanks for this message. It's a bit reassuring, but I wish I knew what the heck causes this problem.

The flickering happened with both Cox Cable HD in Phoenix and also using an HD OTA antenna here in Denver. The greenery in Lost just flickers out of control and it drives me mental. I'm still very much in the camp of "it's the TV", but I look forward to future possibilities and resolutions.

Yup, I have that 'on off' flicker on the Angel Fals scene on the first Disc. I'm using a 1080p, 32" Sharp Aquos w/a PS3 and that flicker is downright annoying.

Any suggestions? Maybe take the disc to a Sony store and see if it happens on their equipment...

I have yet to watch any more episodes, so I can't tell yet if this image problem continues randomly, but so far this particular episode is ripe with em. Check out what Heresy pointed out at 5:30 in the same episode. You can clearly see the image problems more pronounced than in my example, and you can even see other image problems as well, like visible artifact lines. So, I guess it's time to contact BBC America right?

are you saying that you do not have it on Blu-Ray?

I do have it on Blu Ray, when I said "Is this problem also visible on the HD release?" I meant the HDDVD release.

I'm not sure what that would accomplish... I have a Sony Playstation 3 with hdmi hookups connected to a 1080p tv, which is about the best they could test it on in their stores. I think the only thing we can do is send a hefty amount of emails to BBC America Home Entertainment, cause a little stir, and wait...

I was thinking of eliminating the 1080i factor, and possibly the PS3 (assuming they had a standalone B-ray player hooked up) from the equation... but if you're experiencing this on 1080p then I guess going to Sony would be a waste of time... unless I upgraded my set :-)

Ok so I bit the bullet and just sent an email to BBC America's standard inquiries email address. The message I sent is as follows:

"Hello, i'd like this email to be directed to the BBC Video department, as this is a blu-ray disc issue.

I have recently just purchased Planet Earth on blu-ray, and have experienced some very distracting, and frankly disappointing image problems. At exactly title 4 chapter 1, 00:03:47 on the first disc, episode 3, there are some very clear image distortions, and then again at 5:30 on the same episode. This issue is very disappointing and unacceptable as this blu-ray disc set is highly acclaimed, and is an amazing showcase in high definition technology. I post on a blu-ray message board, and have heard from more disappointed and frustrated Planet Earth blu-ray disc owners, as this issue is present in many copies of the set. I hope that you can address this issue accordingly and perhaps make available a replacement disc/discs (there are reports of other episodes having the same problems on the same set) to those who own copies that have these defects.

Thank you for your time, I hope to hear from you soon."

I hope this helps... It wouldn't hurt to have more of you send out a similar email. The more the merrier right?

I think Warner Bros. would be to blame on this on. I believe they are the ones that encoded the disc. I also believe everyones disc is the same. Just some people notice it and others don't.

I have the flicker problem too, output at 1080/24p and some of the dark scenes have very bad blue speckling.
