I agree. I would find that particularly insulting, and literally reeking of "pity".
On one hand, the losing team could see this as an opportunity to grow, as there's no going any lower.
On the other hand .. how do you not even score -1- point over an entire match?
This score reflects the equivalent of pitting an NBA team vs a team made of 7 year olds...

Unless the losing team was made of handicaped or much younger players (in which case the match wasn't even fair to start with), I don't get it.

Exactly, even when I play and my pick up team is up by a whole lot we just start goofing off and trying crazy stuff like off the backboard ally's...we dont keep trying to destroy the other team.

And I hate when teams play full court press the whole game and they are winning, there is no need for that.

that's just it, if u read the article closely, it sounds like the losing team may be made up of special needs girls or girls w/some kinds of handicaps or learning disabilities.

this game was over before it started. that's the part i have a real problem with.

right, like i said i was speaking in general, if the teams are that lopsided, thats when its normal to put in the backup players to give them a chance to show what the can do as well, at the same time save their starters so they dont take any unnecessary risks, i didnt read either way if they did that or not, and also this particular story says the losing team had girls with "learning differences", which makes me wonder why they are in a league with a team that good in the first place, they could have been put in the junior varsity league or something to make it a little more competitive

The bigger picture is that competitive sports (in high school at least) should teach something about life. What did the winning team learn from any of that? Nothing about nobility or humility! The damn coach ran full court press into the fourth quarter and allowed his team to still shoot threes. If nothing else, that's pathetic coaching, friends. It should have been 3rd string, running 2-3 zone, no steals, no threes, with a minimum of six passes per shot. I'm not saying the winning team should not have shot the ball anymore, but when you're up 59-0 at the half, you can have some control. That kind of coaching is not respected at any level of any sport. Shameful!

Now, I'm not usually one for all the bleeding-heart liberalism that says nobody should lose. But come on! You have a team of kids that have to feel bad enough about themselves most of the time, and now this. If I have kids, I'll explain to them how to lose and win with dignity, but they will never play for a coach like that. Disgraceful!
