Hong Kong HK version

What are its pq&sq? I have read that pq isn't good in both UK and US versions, but at least UK's is cheap at Amazon.co.uk. Maybe it's better to stick to DVD for now? I can get Russian collector's edition digipak on 3 DVDs just for $22 from my supplier.

I'm not a sound guy but the HK disc is the best in terms of the technical format used. It's DTS-MA 5.1-ES, whereas the US disc is lossy 6.1 and the UK is lossless but "only" 5.1. And yeah, the video quality of both isn't very good but certainly better than a DVD. Basically it's an old transfer with tons of video noise which the UK version kept and they got rid of it with DNR in the US/HK version. I prefer the look of the UK disc.

US disc has some extras while the others are barebones.

Too bad UK version is region AB locked. I'd buy it, I like its price. I think I could try HK version if it's really region ABC and not just region A as it's marked on YesAsia.

Back when Basic Instinct was released in the UK on DVD there was a faulty .1 track.
There was a some mistake made when the soundtrack was mastered and the sub channel was almost left out.
This is the release i'm talking about:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Basic-Instinct-10th-Anniversary-Special/dp/B0000649GH/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1308418741&sr=8-5
I don't think that it was offically admitted that it was faulty but it was, belive me.
I bought the US version and that had the .1 channel mastered right

The .1 channel on the UK Blu-Ray is also faulty, i did a comparison with the Artisan DVD http://www.amazon.com/Basic-Instinct-Michael-Douglas/dp/B0000JCFPE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1308419090&sr=8-4and it's unbelivable the amount of bass info that's missing

Put on the club scene and compare the two, you will feel and hear the difference.
This is really annoying since i've bought so many version of this film, the european side does'nt seem to get it right

It figures that's the one I have. I don't think I've watched it yet either so I can't comment on the LFE channel. I'll have to watch it and check.

The UK version looks the best IMHO.

I'm confused here.
A reviewer on this site mentioned that the UK Blu of Basic Instinct has a wrong audio mix. One channel should be faulty.
Is this now true or not? I just bought int and would like to know so I can return it on time.

US - AVC 17588 kbps, DTS-HD HR 6.1 3039 kbps 24-bit, BD25 (Region A) DNR, more extras (Region A Locked)

UK - VC-1 16968 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 1989 kbps 16-bit, BD50, better PQ than US/HK, fewer extras (Region A/B)

Ok, but that doesn't answers my question: does the UK BD has faulty mix of the .1 channel or not?

It's just strange that nobody but the 1 reviewer complained about this.
As the UK bd (released by Optimum) contains the same audio and subtitle languages as the Dutch BD (released by Universal), then the Dutch BD is also faulty.
Too bad, as I love the movie very much.

Strange, I tested the blu-ray disc this morning and checked all channels.
The .1 is even the most prominent one of all channels. So I can conclude that there is nothing wrong with the audio of the UK blu-ray.

Is the UK version the same as the US Unrated Directors Cut?

Any extra footage, cuts, etc?

The UK version is the Unrated Director's Cut, same as the U.S. version.

I just watched the documentary on the Pioneer laserdisc. Verhoeven says that most of what was in the script is what ended up in the film. He added that there was a scene filmed where Nick asks Catherine about the money she paid Nielsen for his file. He said that it was redundant, therefore removed from the film. I would have liked to have seen this. Hopefully It'll turn up some day.
