After an afternoon of comparing Sony LCD vs Pioneer Elite Plasma, it was a no Brainer for me! Pioneer Elite Plasma HANDS DOWN!!

I think LCD has come along way but still has a long way to catch up to plasma's picture.

The reviews on that sony had better reviews than the samsung ln55a950, which is their equivalent model though. They gave it the best colors and deepest blacks of any LCD from sound and vision.

u cant say the sammy is the same thing as the pio

in terms of brand equivalence..... from top imo

would be like

lcd 1. sony 2. sammy 3. sharp 4. phillips
plasma 1. pio 2. panasonic 3. sammy 4. LG

they compared the third best plasma brand to like the top of the line LCD, so i would say thats not a fair review.

I have the Sony XBR3 that I bought In 2006. At first I hated the slight clouding it had, but after Sony sent me a USB update it looks great and the black levels are much better. It still looks better than some new lcds. I saw the Pioneer kuro and it just looks sharper than all the lcds including the xbr8. I have always been a Sony guy, but lately Sony has been lacking in the customer service and competition department so I think Pioneer is better for me at this point.

Of course, that's just your opinion. I think folks would be real interested to know your reason(s) why you "wouldn't look twice" at the best display currently available. Just curious.

I never said the Sammy was the same as the pioneer, but the sony is better than the sammy, and the pioneer is better than the sony.

I haven't seen either TV, but I can say this. I watched the superbowl at my brother-in-law's house on his plasma...It was like looking in a mirror. No, I don't look like Ben Rothlisberger, but I could see the windows behind us bright as day and it bugged the hell out of me. So I agree that it depends upon the environment.

For what it's worth, here's the review from CNET. It basically backs up the general notion that plasmas have better blacks and LCDs have less glare.

Among LCD heavyweights, Sony and Samsung have been trading blows for the last couple of years at the top of the standings. This bout involves cutting-edge, top-of-the-line LED-backlit models most of us can't afford, but it's entertaining nonetheless. In this corner is the Sony KDL-55XBR8, the most-expensive flat-panel HDTV we've ever tested at CNET and possibly the worst deal per square inch since Sony's own XEL-1. In that corner is the Samsung LN46A950. In case you don't have time to read the complete blow-by-blow, we'll cut to the chase: the Sony XBR8 won. It delivered deeper black levels than the Samsung, along with less blooming and off-angle fade, two issues you'll have to read about below. But as good as the Sony is, it still couldn't knock out the champion of the superheavyweight plasma division, Pioneer's Elite Kuro, which still reigns supreme as the best HDTV overall and it costs less, even at 60 inches, than the 55-inch KDL-55XBR8. That said, if you have a room full of light, a penchant for video processing modes, and a bank account bursting with cash, you'll find the flagship Sony mighty appealing.
