I would go plasma, way better blacks. But depending on your room conditions LCD might be a better choice. If i were looking at LCD i would stay away from sony and look at Samsung, they get the best reviews for LCD
I think LCD has come along way but still has a long way to catch up to plasma's picture. Last edited by Twitch9; 02-08-2009 at 12:18 AM. |

I don't need to quote a web site i deal with this question everyday. LCD can not reproduce place like plasma, it is just not possible, plasma has a ink like black where LCD looks flat, also has to do with the matt screen that LCD uses over the glossy screen that plasma uses. LCD will never have a deep black like plasma and that is why plasma will always have a better picture with more accurate detail and better color.

A general rule of thumb is that plasmas deliver better home theatre performance than LCDs. Our video guru, David Katzmaier, says the difference is due mostly to the fact that backlighting-based LCD TVs typically can't display black as well as plasmas; it ends up closer to dark grey. That shortcoming decreases the amount of detail you can see in the shadows and ultimately leaves the picture looking -- as videophiles would say -- less three-dimensional. |

The LED backlit displays by Sony and Samsung are nearly as good as Pioneer plasmas when it comes to blacks. You will sacrifice shadow detail, unless you have a way to correct near black gamma. I have a 55XBR8 and do not regret the purchase, but my BD player has gamma correction. Without it, blacks are crushed, and you lose detail.
If you do a lot of viewing in a bright, daylit room, seriously consider the LCD's. If movies in the dark are your only concern, then plasma is probably the way to go. |

Remember the off axis viewing weakness of LCDs.
