It's $30, but I have one of these by my couch. It makes for a nice stand to recharge controllers when you're not using them, plus it has two USB ports if you need to recharge and play at the same time.

Plus it looks really cool.

Does that actually work?

I heard the Wiimote charging cradle can damage the Wiimote, so I was holding back from buying any.

One of my Tv's has a usb port many of my laptops have usb ports and even my cable box hd dvr has a usb port. Seems as though you should look around at your other equipment.

I have all those things.... but the point is the only thing on my side of the room is a sofa... so if my controller battery runs out WHILE I am playing... there's no convenient way to charge it. That's why I prefer a swappable battery pack. I'm not slamming the PS3 controller... just stating my personal preference for an external bettery vs an internal one. I also like the external pack because I can power off the controller just by popping the pack out and back in; saving the need to go into the menu. Again.... no huge deal..... just a personal preference.

oh I thought you were speaking in general not during game play. I guess only few people make sure their controller has enough charge before they start playing.

I've had the Pelican PS3 charger for about a year now, my DS3 and Sixaxis are still fine. I haven't heard anything about Wiimote charging cradles damaging Wiimotes, so I'm not sure what to look for (got the seemingly standard Nyko charger).

I heard about the Wii-Mote cradle damaging controller, but that was some bloke that left them in their while he was on holiday, so he deserved to have them over heat and be damaged.

My PS3 in always dusty only clean off the vents, it currently sits next to my sofa so I have no problems with cabling up my controllers if needs be

That Pelican charger he mentions is excellent. I've tried some different chargers, and that Pelican is 'the one' by far.

This charger does not require a USB connection to your PS3 or anywhere else. It only needs to be plugged into a wall outlet. That means you can place it by your sofa if there's an electrical outlet nearby.

Whenever you're done playing, it's very easy to set it back on this charger. Unlike some other chargers, it not difficult to get it in. Just use the Pelican charger as the controller's resting spot, and you'll never find yourself running out of power. The PS3 controller runs for a very long time on a single charge.

And if that somehow isn't enough for you, buy a DualShock PS3 controller and turn the vibration function off. That controller has approximately 10 times the battery capacity of the SixAxis. It needs it because vibration is a power hog. But if you disable the vibration function, it will run basically forever on a single charge. The only downside is the DualShock is considerably heavier because of the heavier battery (some prefer the additional weight anyway).
