![]() With the high-end electronics stores closing down nationwide and Circuit City closing that carried medium quality electronics most cities now just have Best Buy and Walmart to choose from (Some people still have Ultimate Electronics). Super Walmart does have a good selection of low cost TV's but so far no true 1080P/24 models yet just normal 1080P's with 3:2 pulldown. Walmart has become the new Best Buy with the average consumer buying TV's at Walmart versus Best Buy. Best Buy is now considered the new high-end electronics store when compared to Walmart. The times are changing with retail stores closing down and a few companies getting out of the display business. In a few years the consumer will have less choices to choose from and higher prices since there will be less competition. I noticed something interesting on the Ultimate Electronics home page, it says "Every Day We shop Walmart and Best Buy then adjust out prices to beat theirs, so you know we have the lowest Prices Period." http://www.ultimateelectronics.com/ Hopefully Ultimate Electronics stays in business, where I live my two choices in stores is Best Buy and Walmart. We should most likely start to see Walmart carry more medium quality electronics and Best Buy carry more higher end electronics to meet the demands of all the higher-end stores and Circuit City stores closing. With Wal Mart drawing crowds that are shopping for a wide range of products, more people see the tvs there... but they carry mostly the lower end models (for example the Sony's there are the S series I beleive) And come to think about it, I don't recall even seeing an LCD with 120hz at Wal Mart. But the average people that shop there wouldn't know the difference and a lot of them wouldn't care.
And as far as their "low prices" go, you get what you pay for. I've heard from a couple different people that repair tvs for a living and they say that when they take apart a tv they can tell at a glance if it came from Wal Mart. There will be cheaper parts put in the tv and sometimes missing parts all together. I've heard the same stuff about other products as well... For example, a customer of mine talked about buying a brand name kitchen appliance at Wal Mart and thought she got a deal, then it crapped out after a few months. Then she called the company about it and the first thing they asked was "did you buy it at Wal Mart?" and proceeded to explain that Wal mart actually goes to companies and basically says "We want to sell your product at this price, if you want your product in our store, do whatever you have to do so we can sell your product for cheaper" So essentially even though the quality may not all be there, the majority of people would rather pay less to get a cheaper product, and they could really care less (until it stops working of course, then they'll wonder why) Last edited by kabukijoe; 02-22-2009 at 05:16 PM. |

Sears had their own in-house brand. GE/Sylvania, Westinghouse, lots of others were in the low-end tier. And Sony and Motorola's Quasar were on the high end. It wasn't the high-tech, instant data world we live in now, where you could get technical comparisons of the set. You just went into a store (mostly department stores) and compared the sets, looked at the price, and picked one out. Like today, you had picky customers, and you had people who bought the cheapest one that didn't have smoke coming out of the back while it was on display. I wanted the Sony, but couldn't afford it, so I got the Quasar. It was $800 in 1979 (the equivalent of two to three times that much today) and it worked great for about 15 years. I know people who bought the cheaper sets, which worked for three or four years, and then were not economical to repair. They bought TV's three or four times during the time I had one. Their situation was, they couldn't afford to pay, at any single point in time, the higher cost for a quality set. Frustrated by this, they always said, "Well, the picture is just fine, and I like it, so I save X dollars and it's all the same." This thinking will power the Vizio sales, nothing has changed. They don't look as good as Sony or Samsung or whatever, but the differences are small enough for people to overlook them - especially if their old TV is falling apart, or they just want to somehow get into high def without going broke. |

This is very true, I sadly used to work at Wal Mart and people would come in to buy a new plasma when Wal Mart started carrying them. Then I would try to offer an up converting dvd player (because that was the best they carried at the time) and/or proper cable and they would reply "no, I'm just going to hook my VCR and rabbit ears up to it."

First off, where do you get that plasma sales are down? Simply not true, and it's been proven in numerous threads around here. Second, how do you equate "value" wth not buying a plasma? Sorry, but with comparable sizes and features, you'll pay LESS for a plasma.

Perhaps I should have said plasma manufacutres are down .. And obvoiusly you are a plasma owner (I have a RPTV) so relax ... I find it hard to find a plasma in the smaller bedroom size TV 32-37... so thats where LCD has an advantage ...

I'll be honest with you, I don't need a 32 inch plasma in my bedroom, but to each their own. Walmart can sell whatever they want, but when they can produce a 103 inch plasma as Best Buy can please call me. I wonder who you would call if your television had a problem the Geek Squad. You pay for what you get!

I also heard that older plasmas were affected by altitude. Not sure if thats the case with the newer ones. That was a real problem for me, being in Colorado. I also can't say that i've actually seen a plasma set for sale around here... It would be interesting to see a U.S. map showing the different regions Plasma VS. LCD sales. Pointless maybe, but fun to see I think

Thats good for vizio that its selling alot of tv's, but thats only because its so damn cheap. there's nothing to really say about samsung, they adverties their tv's alot ( official tv for the NFL ![]() Vizio is coming out with a 55" LED backlight tv this summer for $2000. how is sony and samsung going to compeat? thats why samsung makes their TOC line, to stand out from cheap ass vizio. 55" samsung A950 $5000, 55" sony XBR8 $6500, 55" vizio $2000. i wonder which one joe is going to choose. |

Personally i think Sharp has a garbage picture from factory default settings. Customize it well or get it calibrated and they're pretty good but few people do that so it doesn't surprise me that they're not on the list because not many consumers have to know hows to customize picture settings and even less actually have a set calibrated. Vizio is great for the value, my favorite bargain tv, but it's very easy to up sell people to a Samsung or Panasonic. The problem is that walmart workers more-than-likely have no salesmanship or cares to do this.

my uncle bought three vizios, roughly the same time "not from wallmart"
![]() when his first went bad he called up a repair dude cause it was out of warranty, started to explain the problem, and the guy laughed and said its a vizio, no problem we know what it is! when the repair dude showed up at his house he explained the faulty chip or whatever that generally fails within the first year or shortly after and new exactly what chip to bring lol with out ever looking at the tv! since that time he has had his second fail for the same reason, 3 is still running strong lol but that is not a good average imo. a big case of you get what you pay for, so when your vizio's start going black, or turning themselves off at random times, remember you got a DEAL ![]() ![]() as far as LCD goes i personally prefer to stick with sony and samsung from my in home post calibration viewing experience ![]() |
