He's getting 2.0 lossless audio using the analog out jacks from the PS3. Unfortunately, that means he's receiving matrixed surround sound for the rear channels.

Unless you're listening in 2 channel stereo, you'd be better off using the digital optical cable for 5.1 DD/DTS lossy audio.

I actually am only using 2 channel stereo at the moment (2.1 actually) as my rear speakers are pain with the wiring. This HTiB came with the shortest wires I've seen in my life and aren't long enough. Also.. my center channel speaker makes a loud "shrill" kind of noise when the sound gets to a certain level and it's incredibly distracting.

Actually James has a coax cable capability, if that is compatible with the PS3 he might be able to do something with it. However I see that he has a shrill sound from his center speaker which I don't think a coax connection is going to help. I also noticed that there was a setting to bring your rear surrounds up to the fronts on the system - they must have known that people would not be able to use the supplied speaker cables!

James you will have to buy new speaker wiring anyway for your new system. Maybe Monoprice will deliver to Alaska, they're right up there with you in the frozen tundra.

However I don't know if I understand the quoted answer, I would think if his system didn't support a codec it wouldn't play that track at all. I also would think that the OP is using 6 RCA cables for his sound, seriously doubt it has HDMI input - but maybe, that being the case the PS3 would be doing the decoding right?

I would guess the variation in sound levels is just that the system is not well balanced between the center and L/R or surrounds.
No, that's not true. It will play it, but it just won't be as good.

I just upgraded my Sony HTIB to B&W speakers I would suggest getting speakers by a speaker maker, my parents have PSB Alpha series and they spent just over a grand on them.
