Well you have to consider. If you're folks are in the 60's for example. they wehere born in 1950, from 1950 to 1980 stuff evolve VERY VERY SLOW then pickup in the 1980's and it's exponentially groing from there. (Talking about computers etc etc electronics for mainstream)

My mom told me that : Back in the day they would keep a tv 20 years MINIMUM. There current tv is 15 years old, jumps, missing a color etc.. but it's do not bother them because they think it will do 20 YEARS!.

Really? A man to the moon? Social awareness? The most explosive period in music? And I can go on!

I am probably going to get my dad a blu-ray player, because he always wants to come to my house and borrow movies but lately all I buy is blu.

I got them a 50 inch xbr1 sxrd and they have an upconvert dvd player but I have been trying to tell him how much better it will look

My dad was upgraded at Christmas with a 1080p Samsung LCD TV and a Samsung BD-P1500 blu-ray player.

I hope my son appreciates what we have, but at the same time, I hope he never holds his nose up in the air at others who may value other things such as vacations, or savings.... to that of personal possessions......

EDIT:

my parents are in their 70's and despite the fact that my dad likes to create DVDs with family photos on them.... or converting home-movies..... VHS is just fine for them..... they rarely rent movies or watch anything other than their 4 channels of television.

All it takes is one look usually.

I had a very tough time doing this with my dad also. He is 53, and we were still using a 32" tube in the living room up until october or so.

At first he was pissed because I sold the tube when he wasn't home and replaced it with a PVR, 42" LG HDTV, and an AVR/Speaker setup. But now he loves it! Constantly watching movies, HD golf and whatever else his heart desires! Unfortunately entire setup is mine, so when I move to my own place I will be taking everything with me (unless of course he wants to pay me for it and I'll just upgrade )

People are just stubborn, yo. That's how the world is.

Funny thing is my parents are unpredictably stubborn when it comes to technology. It seems like they always have the most awesome/latest and greatest TV, but when it comes to all the peripherals, they're nowhere to be found. They're still on DVD and an audio-only receiver that has no remote, but they have a 1080p Sony that they bought when Sony first started putting them out -- i.e. when they were ridiculously expensive. For some reason, though, they won't buy Blu because "it's too expensive." (!!!) Crazy. Oh and they also have only SD programming. Basically, they've got an awesome TV, but nothing to really make it look good. I would say that TV actually looks bad on their set due to the components feeding into their TV.

Yeah, my Dad wasn't going to get one until he saw his favorite movie playing on my TV in 1080p.

My mom's getting new floors. I'm sure that when they get everything hooked back up.... I will have to go over and reprogram the Harmony remote I gave her for her B-day. She has a 52" Sammy plasma, an old DVD player I gave her years ago. an OLD VCR my cousin gave her YEARS ago, an HD satellite box, and an old Kenwood HTiB I gave her. I was surprised when she actually got the HD sat receiver.

if my mom got a blu-ray player it would just mean that i would get 10 times more phone calls, and trips to the house to fix the thing when she switches a setting by accident lol, silly rabbit, technology is for kids.

My dad is over 60 and he just got a Panasonic Plasma and PS3. I also got him to buy a Yamaha HD AV receiver and hook up surround sound speakers to it. Way to go pops!
