While it's a little extreme, I actually had the same thought myself. I really think these cases are a bad idea. They're going to end up having the opposite effect. However, here's a bit from Jeff Kleist over on the Bits thread:

No, no one likes them, and it's gone all the way up the PR depts when they first started hitting.

When it comes to cases, outside of expressing a preference for a certain kind, it's up to what the replicator has in stock

I think they'll stop using them when they get a lot of retailer returns for damaged artwork

But that will probably take 6 months at least. In the end they will probably come up with a way to take the plastic out without cutting holes in it, personally I wouldn't mind sacrificing that waste of space blu-ray bump, but I guess that's here to stay

My QoS case from Amazon isn't like this, was it only certain ones?

I do own a DVD (Choke) like this, and I don't care for it. I would like to think they could come up with a green case without cutting massive holes in it.

some of the QoS cases are normal, some are eco-friendly. kind of like the baraka standard case/paper case deal. just varies.

I know a lot of people wouldn't like it, but I would rather have a CD sized case. It probably wouldn't fly because of asthetics. At least that way you aren't potentially compromising the disc or the artwork.

The problem with this "eco-friendly" case is that it's not universally accepted and therefore not "eco-friendly." They have just created more trash. The numerous people who hate them are going to buy new full cases and throw away these "eco-friendly" cases back into the environment. That is what I am doing. Suck it environment.

You could just recycle the eco-friendly cases rather than just toss them in the trash, that's what they're made for.

I hate these cases. Going green is important but not at the sacrifice of the product.

Thin-paks would be a nice option -- less plastic and less space on the shelf!

Standing in line at Best Buy with QOS I knew it felt light. I just knew buying those 22 copies of The Best Buy Hancock preview Blu-ray would come in handy one day. I already switched out my QOS with the Amaray case to match Casino Royale. I'm all for the environment just not with something that I'm going to have for years and want quality. I like the Amaray cases with the embossed logo and latch on the side because at least I know I'm getting a quality product for 25-35 dollars. If they're going to use Eco cases for future releases they need to at least drop prices a little. I can't see paying 34.99 for a flimsy and light case.

My copies of Man with the Golden Gun and License to Kill came with eco-friendly cases, strangely QoS didn't and all three were packaged together in Best Buy's exclusive Bond set.

Here's a photo in case people haven't seen it yet

Got my Silence Of The Lambs in one of these cases yesterday. As if they weren't hideous enough, the f*cking security tag is stuck really hard to the back of the front cover and has left a horrible pinch on the front picture

The eco friendly case is a bad idea. Save the enviroment Ha Ha.. it is a cheaper case, that cost less, so they can make more profit. It is all about the money. If the case cost less, then LOWER the price.

Yes, these new cases are going to save the environment. Seriously? Sure every little bit helps, but people have to look at this in the context of what is going on. How much actual plastic is being saved, how much energy etc... Now, compare that with the number of plastic bottles from water and soda that are thrown away and not recycled every day! The environmental savings from those cut out cases is miniscule if you look at the big picture. I know people who refuse to recycle, it is just too much effort to throw it in the recycle bin instead of the trash!
