Most LCD's actually refresh at a higher rate than plasma's, but the response time (OFF>ON>OFF) of plasma is so much faster that they don't need to refresh at 120, 240, etc.

Thank's for correcting, sometimes my technical explanation's are off a bit but you get the point i was trying to make.

And as far as the OP's concerned, what is you budget, I think that will play big part as to which panny you buy.

are you looking to buy right now or is there a time line. If you are looking to buy right now i would suggest go with the tc-p50g10 panny. you can check out profesional reviews of this set at cnet.com and hdguru.com both rate it very high. I own this particular set as well, and i really love it . hope this is of some help.

If you can wait until the summer, the 50" V10 will be in your budget. Maybe even the 54" if you look around.

I agree with NJ if you can wait a couple of months the 50"V10 will be out along with the 54"G10 both will be in your price range, the V10 is only 2" thick and is covered by a single sheet of glass, very sexy set also it will have the 96hrz 24p, you can search in google to check it out, but again if you are looking to buy now, i say go for the G10.

let me guess your friends must not own any of the top tier models out of the brands that you mentioned because i doubt very seriously you would be using the wording "blow away". Because if you were to compare imagery from them to the likes of: Sony XBR6/7/8 models, Pioneer 5020/6020/111/151 models, Panasonics 800/850u models in picture quality on anything/games included, it would be just the opposite compared to your 650!

I own one and I AGREE!

But yeah the decision process is simple:

Buy now: 50" Panasonic G10 $1500 on amazon (save some $, do you need speakers?) *edit, just saw you have some B&W's

Buy later: 50" Panasonic V10 ($2300 MSRP so should get lower soon after release)

The new samsung 50" 850 Plasma (PN50B850) is awesome and retails for about 2300. It also has/claims full 1080 motion resolution, is slim as f**k, and i'm still checking to see if it can handle 24p properly. The G10 is also an awesome choice, rates like #2 on all time plasma list(cnet) and the THX mode saves you about $300 from getting it calibrated*. However, I'd probably hold off until the summer and get the V10 since it will have the 96hz mode to handle 24p properly since the 48hz on the G10 flickers like crazy.

*I understand the THX mode will not be as good as an ISF calibration since the picture will vary depending on lighting conditions but it's still an accurate mode and probably set for a dark room.

The 850 is capable of handling 24p. I could not figure out how but i'm assuming it goes to 48hz. When i turned on 24p on the blu-ray player the t.v. automatically adjusted and went from "1920x1080 @60hz" to "1920x1080 @24hz"(that just notes the incomming signal, not what the t.v. displays). I very sublty noticed flicker when i turned on 24p in the blu-ray players menu but it was nothing like the G10 Panny. On top of that, once i popped in transformers the flicker was no longer noticeable at all.

I know a lot of people around here say that panasonic plasmas are the greatest thing to ever happen to home theater, but I wouldn't take anything made by Panasonic unless it was free. I've owned a number of Panasonic products, and friends and family have owned them, and I've found them to be extremely unreliable. From TVs, DVD players, stereo equipment, and phones, they all broke down early and often. I'd take the Samsung. Just my anecdotal testimony... from what I hear, the Viera actually gets very high consumer reliability ratings; but that certainly contradicts my experience.

Yes. I sell tv's, i stare at it daily, and i activate the 48hz mode to demo it to customers. To me, it flickers enough for me to call it crazy.
