Let's not forget that before the mid 80's Spielberg was not known for drama movies, yet before long he did Color Purple. He even said many times that he waited more then 10 years before doing Schindler's List. He felt that he was not ready to do so as a younger man.
This is very true but Duel, his first shows more drama, power and passion for the art than most directors who have done 10,20 movies.

Clint Eastwood keeps making great movies, and he really got into directing a long way into his career. It seems to me that a lot of actors take the same step (making great movies that is).

Every year it seems we are treated to a couple of good movies from up-and-coming directors.

Besides, I still consider guys like Guillermo Del Toro, Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson as young guys.
Eastwood will always be considered by me as one of the most outstanding directors of our time. Del Toro is a possible, Nolan and Jackson will probably be remembered for there blockbusters, not for there art.

seriously though, with the idiocracy we see taking place everyday our kids might actually look at his movies as "classics" along with Jason Statham movies like the Transporter and Crank.

tastes change over time, for better or worse, and so will what we as a society consider to be "classics".
If society in 200 or 300 hundred years think Stratham is a great actor (I do like his films) and Uwe Boll as a classic director (again I liked the only film of his I have seen, Alone in the dark) then we should all pack our bags and take a one way trip to the center of the sun.

Yeah, i'm sure Fast and Furious is simply their favorite movie to get high to at this point, or something similar.
I'm 34 and know a lot of guys/gals in their 20's and i'm eternally sighing at their shitty taste in everything. Mostly because they are oblivious to the idea that anything "old" or Un-Popular could actually be great. It's an attitude like "i've never heard of that movie/band/author/painter/musician, it can't be good if I, a 22 year old girl who doesn't pay attention to anything or do any kind of research, hasn't heard of it." Then you try to turn them on to something new and it's the same old answer. "That's boring, or slow, or weird, or i just can't explain my reaction to this because my vocabulary is that of a 4 year old."

I can't watch Fast and Furious even when I'm high , that's how bad it is to me but to some it must be like Paul Walker is the new Steve McQueen in their eyes.

I agree with whoever said Aronofsky and Danny Boyle could be the ones.

Michael Bay
Christopher Nolan ( Prestige )
Peter Jackson

Not ready to add but potentional:
Danny Boyle (Sunshine )
J.J. Abrams but if he continues with more Star Trek and makes some other great movies,Tarsem Singh though he seems low budge, The Fall and The Cell are fantastic
Alex Proyas Dark City and The Crow make me want to add Alex Proyas, but really need to see more work (haven't watched Knowing yet).

I would have said Joe Wright, but the Soloist was disappointing. Hopefully his next effort is better.

Maybe Carlos Cuaron can follow his brother's footsteps.

Definitely Paul Thomas Anderson. Every movie he made was absolutely fantastic, and I have the feeling the majority of them (at least those he already made) will become classics. I only wish he would make more films, but I guess it's quality over quantity. So it's probably for the best.
Christopher Nolan is also very good. The Prestige is very underrated in my opinion. I was stunned when I left the theater after it was finished.
Darren Aronofsky is also a very talented director. I loved The Fountain and didn't think it was hard to grasp at all. The graphic novel is recommended as well, gives a bit richer story and has great art. I haven't seen The Wrestler yet.

Guys like Guillermo Del Toro and J.J. Abrams don't really do it for me. After Hellboy, Del Toro seems a bit too much style over substance (have not seen Pan's Labyrinth yet, so I may be wrong) and Abrams seems a bit too generic to be anything special, to me.

Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro, at least one of them will be viewed as a legendary director in Hollywood before long.
