+1, raising the sub that much more off of the riser platform will only help isolate the sub from the riser/floor = cleaner sound.

Great job on the riser itself, and I think I see a little bit of a bass trap under there for further dampening....very nice indeed!

So I'm thinkin about makin my own riser this week, and here's my plan so far. Get a couple pieces of plywood about the size of the A2-300 and cover them with black carpet. Fasten them together at the corners with some 6" wooden legs from Lowes. Then fill in between the boards with a few layers of foam similar to this (crazyBLUE).

Then tightly wrap some black carpet around the legs, covering the foam, looking like this but around the legs.

Then I'll screw in some of these to the fours corner for a nice vibration/decoupling effect

Hopefully when done, it'll look something like this.

Thumbs up Riser #1

Well I just made my first riser (aka GRAMPA) last night. I am not the handy-man type so I'm pretty happy with the result. Honestly, I didn't even own a single screw before this project. I also don't own any power tools so I had to screw everything in by hand... what a biatch. Anyway, this was kind of a test-run for the riser I will be making for my dad for father's day. I'm going to make that one tonight. The only thing I am going to do differently is bring each leg in 0.5 inches more towards the middle. This will make the space between the legs exactly 12" wide. This is significant because the acoustic foam sold by parts express is 24" wide. This will allow me to double the foam up. The space between the legs of the riser pictured below is 13", so I can't double the foam up with the 11" of excess foam I have left.

A little about the riser: I used a thin crushed velvet fabric that I ordered on ebay for 6 bucks. It looks a lot better than the carpet IMO. Since the fabric is so thin, it doesn't offer much for dampening. To counter this, I bought 1/2 inch thick *lmers foam board at wally-world for 5 bucks. This probably isn't the best type of foam to use, but it was the best I could do for what I was willing to spend. This foam was glued to the top of the plywood. I'm also using acoustic foam from parts express under the plywood and some rubber feet (also from PE) attached to the legs.

I customized the riser by taking the fabric to an embroidery shop. They charged me 8 bucks to embroider "waut" on it. I think it looks cool and was worth the extra bit of money. My father's is also embroidered. I will be posting pictures of that riser later (tonight or tommorow).

Finally, I want to thank Big Daddy for answering my questions and his awesome instructions. Without BD, this wouldn't have been possible!

lol... nice! thank you!

---------------------

as promised, here are a couple pictures of my second riser. hot off the "workbench"... completed 10 minutes ago! i will be giving this to my pops tomorrow for fathers day... hope he likes it!

i ended up bringing each leg in a full inch. this left me with a 13" piece of acoustic foam that i used as a second layer on my first riser. however, the ideal length is definitely 12" if using the foam from PE.

this dude is totally ready to start an info-commercial for the velvet risers. Notice he's holding his reading glasses when he wants to go for that 'serious' look.

anyways, I already plan to "one-up you" and make a riser out of one of these, and no, I'm not talking about the eucalyptus...

insert Tropic Thunder comments now...

OK ice ~ AKA ~ MAD SCIENTIST !!

I am going to make three more risers (GRAMPA'S) For the front ~ left side ~ right side subwoofers . The riser I have will have the upper legs removed & do its thing with the sub behind the couch , This way the sub behind the couch will be lower to the ground & farther from my ears !!
The 3 new Risers will put the center of the woofer at 24 inches off the ground & will look totally different from what has been made here ! Are you up for A challenge to see who can come up with the best Idea & make it !
I have already made A drawing & list of mine But I can wait if you want me to !!

OMG man, I don't know if I currently have the time to be honest. After today, I'm working a 7 day stretch, so my time will be grossly consumed. But let me get this straight; your going to have a front left sub, a front right sub, and a third sub behind the couch? If I understand correctly, your going to move the sub you've had behind the couch? What are the other two subs? Will you be kicked out of your condo in two months? Oh wait, I know the answer to the last one...never mind.

I just had to thread stalk you to see what you were up too. First of all, you sold your amp, and didn't even ask me! Oh well, pays to butter up the mods! As far as the subs, my ultimate plan is to have a sub in every size that ranges from 15" to 6". Yes, that will be at least 5 subs. That again is my plan, I don't have the money to pull the trigger on that all at once, it will be a progression. Family will do that to you. As far as the riser, if someone can help me locate a panda, then I will win the riser game forever! All seriousness though, tell me what your thinking, whether privately though PM or publicly though this thread. I'm curious. I've got stuff in mind too, just haven't been able to execute it. Maybe we can collaborate. Just opened a bottle of wine....waiting....

I am serious and not joking. Instead of risers, another option is to buy four strong bracket/shelves and attach them to the walls (two in the front and two in the rear). You will save a lot of space this way. There are those old-style TV/VCR wall shelves that you can use or you can build your own custom wooden shelves. Make sure they are a couple of feet away from the ceiling. I have my two Bose 901 speakers attached to the rear wall like that. They are very heavy and I secured them with belts so that they don't fall off.

funny you say this, because this is what I was going to come back with to crazy. I didn't think of the tv/vcr shelf thing though, kudos to you on that. The reason this first came to mind for me was 3 subs are going to be an impossible thing to hide from sight by any means. The one behind the couch, fine, but three up front are a lot to look at, especially on a riser. Maybe have one on the floor, and the other two ceiling mounted would be cool.
