I didnt call Avatar junk.

Avatar is a popular comodity that appeals to the masses. That was Camerons desire and intent. He succeeded.

so "best bang for the buck in the history of cinema" was referring to what it made theatrically...... or for the consumer? It sounded like he meant for the consumer, which still leads me to question what he's talking about, or how he came up with that.

I like Whalberg and think he is a darn good actor. Buy in The Happening, he was laugh out loud ridiculously bad. I thought it was a joke at first. I still like him though.

There is a code that you can enter on "avatarmovie.com" that has some basic junk, but I beleive it is supposed to eventually have more stuff including the savings, but not sure.

In the case of Avatar the choice was made purely on quality since the tickets for Avatar were definitely not more affordable than the tickets for other movies.

Like always people chose quality they could afford and Avatar happened to be the best bang for the buck in the history of cinema.
Well argued.

But the choice was based on hype to some degree. Without yet seeing it, they couldnt know it was quality. But I'll concede that point for repeat viewers.

My 6 and 9 year old nephews want to see this film. I have yet to see it myself, would this be okay for them to watch it IYO? It's PG-13.

Hmm..it is a bit long. They would have loved the 3d but it does get violent towards the end.

It wasn't that bad. Granted, it wasn't SUPER either. It was a decent flick. I own it. Mainly because I love Wahlberg and the little lady that he was with in that film.

it's a tad long.
some slower dialogue heavy scenes.
gets pretty violent for the last 25 minutes (arrows through people among other things)
some minor swearing.
they might not be able to follow all the high tec visuals in the army base area.

the 9 year old might like it, but a 6 year old i think would get bored quickly.

Watch it yourself first. Like SFMarine says, there is some rugged stuff in the battle scenes that could upset a tot. Iffy for the 6 year old IMO.

I don't think a 6 year old could handle Avatar, the 9 year old should be fine though. Just a bit too much violence in the climactic fight scenes for a small child.

Thanks, my 9 year old neph is very mature, so I think he can handle it. No go for the 6 year old one though.

Although I liked Avatar, the filmmakers couldn't seem to decide if they were making a beautiful mythic fantasy or a comic book. Yes, I know the two can overlap, but the one-dimensional (O. K., 1.5 dimensional) Colonel was a blight on the movie. Although archetypal figures are sometimes one-dimensional in the original versions of fairy tales and myths, this movie had characters imbued with many deeper, more realistic characteristics (such as tenderness), and the Colonel looked shallow and out of place.

The similarity of the story to many others did not have to be a problem, but was, for some people -- as someone once said, "It's a fine line between an archetype and a cliche' " -- the more swept away people are by a movie, the less slipping over that line matters. It didn't bother me much, but as we walked out of the theater one of our party, who loves fantasy and Sci Fi, said "I've seen it so many times before!" Perhaps if it had a more involving score, a deeper villain, and had been presented in a format less distracting than 3 D (e.g., 70 mm with a more comfortable aspect ratio than IMAX, e.g., the classic 70 mm 2.2:1) it would have been more effective.

Perhaps its great popularity grew out of its beauty, reverence for nature, and ... was it the first pretty well made film in the last decade or so to stir empathy and compassion for indigenous characters?

Do their parents fight and slap each other around? If so, the kids should be just fine. If not, you might want to stay away.
