Individual cases would be cool. I have the 4K SteelBook but I’m sure there will be a third Jurassic World, so I’ll probably get rid of the Steel anyway when that comes out. While I do like sets that save shelf space, for an ongoing series like Jurassic Park, it doesn’t really make much sense to go for a box set. And for something like Jurassic Park, I’d like to have the 4K disc AND the Blu-ray anyway.
On an unrelated note, does anyone know if the old DVDs had any special features that didn’t get ported to the Blu-rays? |

Not only is the new BD the same old master, but the UHD comes from the same crap as well. And if it is indeed a new scan, then it’s from the same IP and processed in the same ugly way the old BD was. If you want a good looking modern restoration from OCN, I strongly recommend the 3D disc.

Correct, DNR removes grain fully in the 3D version. But just like remastered T2, JP 3D has a serious amount of detail and it’s immediately apparent that it’s sourced from OCN. JP 3D also has a very faithful color grade to original 35mm prints. It’s a much better and more faithful presentation than the UHD. Why Spielberg didn’t use this master for the UHD is a mystery.

Is the UHD of Jurassic Park a clear upgrade from the BD, or is that debatable?
I remember seeing screenshot comparisons once, and the UHD looked very DNR'd to me. The BD of JP is definitely an older master, and has quite a bit of noise, etc., but at least it isn't DNR'd to death. What's the verdict? Thinking of picking up the collection for TLW and JW. |

Personally, I still think it's worth it. We're all in agreement that NEITHER transfer (the 1080p Blu or 4K UHD) is what it "should be".... but the UHD is indeed a significant improvement, in my opinion. The Blu was so overly bright that it didn't even look like a "scary movie" anymore; I always had to lower the Brightness setting on my projector... and even then it was still over-cooked. The UHD sits in a much more appropriate space, in terms of atmospheric darkness. And the toning down of Universal's trademark over-sharpening is a HUGE plus. That fake non-film-grain noise on the old 1080p disc is painful and shocking to see, once you've spent some time with the UHD. As a good indicator of everything I've been saying, check out the "5th comparison" at caps-a-holic. It pretty much says it all: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...116776&i=4&l=0 Hope that helps. |

Thanks, that does indeed help. From the screenshots, it looks like the UHD has about the same amount of detail as the BD, just sans the noise. The BD seems to have more detail, due to the added fuzziness, except for the egg, where the BD clearly appears to have more detail.
I know it's nigh impossible to depict colours accurately from a UHD, but the BD looks lusher and more vibrant, but also more overcooked. I thought the UHD had more beautiful colours? I guess I'll give it a shot. At least TLW and JW will be decent upgrades, right? Quote:

I have mixed memories of this disc honestly but I remember parts of the UHD looking pretty nice. Then other parts... especially effects shots... would look processed and crappy. It's really a side-grade, not an upgrade or downgrade, IMO.

3D Blu kicks UHD’s ass. Better detail. More faithful color grade. Obvious scan of OCN.

Sure, if by better detail you mean additional, copy/pasted grass.

I haven’t. I don’t own any 3D discs, so I was hoping to find out if someone else has been successful.
