I love the cinematography in H6. I can just imagine how incredible it would look with an HDR pass!

For those who are primarily interested in the sequels and reboots and the UHD release of the original film, here’s the thread discussing the franchise and Shout’s 2014 box set:

Quite simply: it’s not that vinyl ceased to exist as a thing, but its presence as a mainstream force is dead as a dodo and movies on a disc are heading the exact same way. Should that matter to us collectors as long as we can still buy this precious stuff? No, no it shouldn’t, but at the same time we can’t ignore what’s going on in the wider market and we just hope that movies on a disc continue to be produced into the foreseeable and don’t suffer for quality once they move to smaller and smaller batches.

I’m honestly kind of surprised the F13 set is still around.
The reason it's still around is the same reason all the other Paramount titles Scream Factory put out are still around. The licenses haven't expired yet. Assuming they don't change their licensing stance again, in a few years, we'll see them all go OOP like we did with the recent batch of Criterions.

Hopefully, no one that wants it passes up on My Bloody Valentine this time...

If we are lucky Paramount might release Halloween 6-8 on UHD for October.

Sure, sure. Which still isn’t my point, which is as simple as (though it likely is) don’t count out a physical format that supersedes 4K UHD or, barring that, don’t assume that everything will be digital streaming only in the near-to-mid future.

Fair enough on the latter point, but I’m verr confident that 4K UHD is it as far as physical media is concerned. There’s just no 8K content out there barring a few large format remasters done for NHK in Japan, and while it’s easy enough to say that “there’s just no content” for a new format (‘twas ever thus) it’s also a catalogue thing, as there is but a fraction of content that could actually benefit from 8K resolution.

Sure, we’re happily indulging in 2K upscales on 4K right now but 2K into 8K is a bridge too far IMO (no matter the fancy AI they could use, the alleged results of which for 2K into 4K I’m already not impressed with) and at least those current upscales have the novelty of HDR whereas there is no “HDR 2: HDR Harder” in the pipeline for 8K as a format, so all it’ll have is resolution as a differentiator and if 94% of the image on an '8K Blu-ray' is being upscaled (2M pixels of 2K being uprezzed into 32M for 8K) then boy that’s gonna be an even tougher sell to people.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just saying you’re speaking with 2021 eyes, and you may live to see your words haunt you like someone in 1993 talking about the future of vinyl lived to see theirs. Reality often proves to be stranger than fiction.

"Anything can happen!!!" is always a possibility, but I'd bet way more money on physical not existing in 20 years than I would on physical having a resurgence. You're right though that we never really know, the internet could become insanely regulated, lots of weird stuff could change.

Just set the clock back 30 years and change the word “physical” to “vinyl” and I’ll drop my mic. Those who don’t learn from history gonna be shocked a second time when it’s repeated.

People always want to actually own things so I doubt "physical media" will ever "die". Let's not forget, prior to DVD, owning movies on "physical media" wasn't a big thing. Yes, people bought VHS tapes and of course there were us insane LaserDisc aficionados, but movies were mostly rented, not bought. DVD really changed that. Obviously, neither Blu-ray nor UHD have matched the selling power of DVD in its prime, but there were always be people who want to own a physical copy. Will it become a "niche" market? Probably, but the "niche" labels seem to be doing quite well with it, at least. It's almost like we're reverting back to the LaserDisc days, actually. But I doubt it will ever fully "die".

Chris

Again, vinyl is a drop in the bucket of music revenue. You're not really proving what you think you're proving. Can movies have a profitable drop in the bucket as well? Of course they can, but will massive corporations focused on streaming allow it? Very much a question.

People of a certain age and culture certainly do, but I'm not sure how far that extends.

We've been told that physical media is "dying" or is even already "dead" for years, and yet we keep getting more and more obscure and niche titles being release on the most expensive format, UHD. I don't think people wanting to own actual physical things- even movies- will ever completely go away.

I wonder what kind of cover art this release will have. I really hope it's the original poster. Yeah, Lionsgate's UHD uses it, but it's an iconic poster and the film doesn't need anything else.

Yeah, if it’s anything other than the unfettered original poster art, I’ll just move my copy of the 2014 box set Halloween (1978) discs to a 3-disc and put this new UHD in with it. Or print out a custom cover. Although maybe if they do end up using some horrid new artwork, they’ll include the original on the reverse?
