Well, I don't see any grounds for such negativity. Bare bones? One BD will be dedicated exclusively to special features; each of the films' individual BDs will undoubtedly feature additional bonus content. It's an arrangement that worked quite well for the Fantasia Anthology release ten years ago (Buena Vista Home Entertainment's crowning achievement on DVD, in my opinion).

I'm not being negative, I'm being cautiously optimistic. There are a lot of rumors and news circulation between BD live extras and possible dropping of bonus features and early word from other countries as single disc film releases which isn't the greatest sign, and Disney doesn't seem to be doing Diamond Editions of the films. The release should be Diamond Edition in its bonus features etc.

Right now nothing is certain but the films themselves... if they announce them soon.

I think cautious optimism is a sensible approach, since the majority of this threads notions are built from what members want - not what we know we are getting. The only real facts are that there's a 4 disc edition being released and the two films are being combined in one package.

Just another side note, the german single disc releases are not really an indication for the US- or UK-editions. In fact, in Germany these films never got the threatment they deserve. The only bonus included on the last DVD of Fantasia was the "Claire de Lune"-segment, nothing else.

I think whats maybe unique about Fantasia is that, for the first time in a long time, they're going to have very different products for different regions. A trip to the 'Beauty and the Beast' official page of Disney and you have a 'Diamond Edition' section which states;

"The Diamond Collection takes advantage of the newest breakthroughs in digital imaging technologies to present the most spectacular versions of the Walt Disney Company's greatest animated films ever presented, bringing the world's most treasured movie moments to life like never before! Digitally restored beyond their original brilliance, presented in spectacular Blu-ray high definition picture and sound, and featuring groundbreaking, state-of-the-art immersive bonus content with an unprecedented level of interactivity, personalization and customization, the Diamond Collection is the ultimate high definition viewing experience.

Look for new releases in this prestigious collection:

Bambi — Spring 2011
The Lion King — Fall 2011

This is all very well, but two things make me curious. The first is obvious - Fantasia isn't listed with the upcoming titles, but also that some have suggested the German release isn't a Diamond Edition. This doesn't seem to make sense, as the Diamond title represents not just the placement of the film within the release timeline, but also is true to the above mission statement.

My guess therefore is that some regions will have different products. Germany, like many others, could well indeed just have the bog-standard 'single' releases, and then other major areas such as the U.S and parts of Europe will get box sets...

And I believe this is the exact reason why there is so much ambiguity regarding the release information. At the end of the day, this film has a much narrower target audience and rather than simply shipping the same product everywhere like Beauty and the Beast, Disney are going to release Fantasia based on how they think it will sell. And while the film is indeed ready, it could well be that they've decided to simply roll out pre-orders/information slowly so that they can continue to assess how the film should be distributed.

This of course applies to the artwork too, because depending on the product in question, this will change.

I still think they could have done things a bit more organized this year. They released Dumbo is Mexico first, then Europe! Fantasia was pushed back from March to December, and they re-released Alice in Wonderland when the last edition was clearly fine.

For one thing, they use the artwork from the '00 releases, which we KNOW will change for the US (because they can't use them twice).

The '00 artwork has just been used as a temporary stop-gap, they've done this quite a lot Besides, even if they didn't create new artwork (which obviously would never happen) it would just look really naff when you see how lovely the Beauty and Beast one is.

YES!

Amazon.co.uk finally has the product page for Fantasia. Release date, 8th November apparently though I'm sure this could change.

Whats even more interesting... is this...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fantasia-Dou...827980&sr=8-14

Fantasia Double Play

Any ideas????

Edit: Beauty and the Beast is now listed as a 1st November release. Back to back???

I'm guessing Double Play is a set with Fantasia and Fantasia 2000. Unless Fantasia 2000 was called Fantasia Double Play in the UK, but I doubt that.

"Double Play" is just a term used to signify that it comes with Blu-ray+DVD versions of the movie. "Triple Play" is Blu-ray+DVD+Digital copy.

I just find it interesting because not only is Fantasia 2000 not listed, but why didn't Disney call the Beauty and the Beast release a 'Double Play'? Is it just because Fantasia is going to have the option of a single Blu-Ray and B.R + DVD release?

I think the last release to have this option was Sleeping Beauty, though I could be mistaken

I think you're probably right about there being two options. If it is so, then I'll just get the single Blu-ray set, not because all I want is the Blu-ray version, but because Disney UK have now decided to put horrible DOUBLE PLAY logos on their releases. Just look at Beauty and the Beast:

As for Sleeping Beauty, I believe a single, slip-caseless copy was released about a year after the intital release, so not at the same time unlike Fantasia.

And considering that it's UK and they shouldn't even know what "Double Play" means in the first place--
Looks like they tagged this runner out at second.

By the way, someone on UltimateDisney has seen the restored Fantasia in a movie theater, and it's still censored. It's now only less noticeable because the grain is removed, but the black centaurette is still cut out of the movie. Not really surprising, but there you have it.

it's have to rain pigs out of the sky before someone at Disney were to restore that footage - if it remains in the vaults at all

Hi all.

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Don Hahn at a D23 event on the Burbank Lot last May when the animation building was dedicated to Roy. I asked him specifically about the Fantasia restoration and he told me that it looks "phenomenal" , it's coming in November/December and that Disney pulled out all the stops on Fantasia and went back to the original nitrate negative to restore it and did a full 4K hi-def scan.

I found an additional article that confirms this-(link at bottom):

Restoring Classic Animation
If you think you’ve seen classic Disney cartoons as they were originally screened, think again. Walt Disney Studios executives Sara Duran-Singer, senior vp, worldwide post production, and Theo Gluck, director of library restoration and preservation, gave a dramatic demonstration of the value of going back to the original elements—even if that’s volatile nitrate film.

Disney Studios is in the middle of a multi-year project to do full 4K scans and full digital clean-up, working closely with Lowry Digital for restoration. Fantasia is currently getting the full digital treatment, the 10th title thus far. For the first time in decades, Disney is going back to the nitrate negative, which is between 50 and 75 years old in many cases. Though some nitrate has deteriorated beyond salvation or is missing, the elements available, after a 4K scan, have revealed a level of detail in each cel previously not seen.

“The big breakthrough was putting up the original nitrate negative and scanning it,” says Gluck. “The sharpness is there that you don’t have from the intermediate transfer. The line detail and line art is much more visible. Also the background is more detailed. The other thing that became apparent was the color shifts of all that intermediate stock. We had to do weeks of research to find the real color for our D-Cinema timing. We looked at original backgrounds and cels, pored over books, worked with animators. We got true color accuracy by going back to that original nitrate.”

The results have to be seen to be believed. After a day of focusing on the latest in technology, it was a humbling reminder of the beauty and longevity of film.

In short, it will be awesome!!!!!!!!

P.S. I just noticed that the Nov. 8th date on the amazon.uk "double play" disc has been removed.

Well, the movies (stories & their images) themselves since the much of the original film (nitrate) has deteriorated beyond repair.

Imagine how many other classics are forever lost because of fire or deteriorated negatives/elements.

Cool article. I can hardly wait for this release.

Yeah that stuff happens way to often. I think it was about 15 years ago or so that there was a fire at a Disney warehouse where a lot of production art was being held and a ton of stuff was lost most notably a lot of Bambi rough animations and finished cels. Back on topic though after reading that article I am completely sure that this release is going to just look astounding.
