I bought the 4th film and was going to get the first 3 when I read they were conversions, which for a 3D film seems ridiculous at first glance, though I suppose the CG assets were probably lost, still, I'm curious how the conversions hold up, but it does seems a waster opportunity, if any film can be re-shot by effectively going back in time and changing the cameras, it should be 3D CGI films.

The conversion was done by Legend 3D, here's a snippet where they discuss it: "Why did DreamWorks prefer Legend3D’s 2D to 3D conversion method for the first three Shrek movies as opposed to just re-render the movies in 3D by themselves?" "The process of recovering and de-archiving the assets of animation catalog titles, if they even actually still exist, can be very expensive, time consuming and requires a significant amount of skilled resources. We did receive a large number of assets from DreamWorks which was very helpful though all assets were not available. Without the CG assets, there was no way to convert the trilogy without going back and actually redoing the films. It would have been cost and resource prohibitive to do whereas I believe the partnership with Legend3D proved to be a more financially sound and efficient decision." http://3dvision-blog.com/tag/shrek-3d-conversion/ http://legend3d.com/film/shrek http://www.legend3d.com/film/shrek-2 http://www.legend3d.com/film/shrek-third So Shrek 4 is the only 'native 3D' Shrek film, the first three are bizarrely enough, conversions. I even watched Shrek 1 in 3D and thought it was native from viewing... it's that good a conversion. But after reading your comments I went back and really studied the 3D and I can see in certain shots that it's not a true native image, but is probably the best conversion I've ever seen (no kidding). It's sad that they didn't do a native recompile as Disney did with Toy Story, but I can also assure you that the result is very natural and impressive... so much so that I really did assume it was native by just viewing the material without prior knowledge. Let me assure anyone who is on the fence or dubious about the conversion quality: it's first-rate and actually fooled me. The depth is continuous, and you don't get that strange distortion with foreground faces like you do with Lion King (I can't stand Lion King in 3D because of the many instances of facial distortion in closeups). Shrek characters look naturally dimensional... so much that it would appear native unless you really scrutinize every aspect of every scene. Thanks for the education! dave Last edited by DaViD Boulet; 01-07-2012 at 08:38 PM. |

I actually watched a bit of Shrek 4 tonight to test out the disc and gotta say, WOW, great transfer, amazing clarity!
Despite my disdain for the 2.35:1 aspect ratio Shrek 4 has a gorgeous detail, and the 3D is far far better implemented than the Blue Sky films like Rio or Ice Age or Universal's Despicable me. There's more pop out and more depth, but most importantly the characters seem more rounded and inhabit a 3D space far better. Dreamworks definitely have a leg over the others in this respect. Impressive disc, would recommend it. Last edited by Captain Jack; 01-11-2012 at 09:00 PM. |

Right so I got Shrek 3 so I could compare Shrek 3 (Conversion) vs Shrek 4 (Native) and I have to say, i was pleasantly surprised with the 3D in Shrek 3.
As it was a conversion by Legend I was expecting it to have a somewhat pop-up book look, but colour me surprised, it didn't, well, it did in areas but the main characters are surprisingly well fleshed out. There's a lot of depth to the picture and whilst there isn't any pop-out really the objects to really fill like they are in a 3D space (i.e. the little dragon kid do look like they are zooming around in a 3D space, Shek does seem bulbous etc). There are conversion errors if you stop the disc such as leaves get stuck on the same plane as the bark behind them, but you have to actually pause the film to notice these. Likewise sometimes you can make out that certain elements have that pop-up book look, but these are usually elements in the far background, in general there are a lot of layers to any given shot. Shrek 3 is also definitely not quite as sharp as 4, it's a little like it's being oversharpended in post, I just don't think it has the same inherent detail, but it won't spoil anyone's enjoyment of the film much, it's really nitpicking on my half. All in all, these are the first conversions I've actually been impressed with, it's not native 3D, but it's pretty darn close and I can see why some people didn't even pick up on them being conversions, if you are a Shrek fan and on the fence, I'd say you can jump in because these do add a new dimension to the films and as far as conversions go are the cream of the crop, by far. *Update* saw the whole thing, and damn, it's a good conversion, they must have had CG assets to assist because it almost looks native, def a conversion to be proud of for Legend. I agree they look great! Four being the best despite being a 2.35 aspect ratio. I actually think the story for 4 is second only to the first one!
If you search eBay, there are some great deals on the set that was offered as an exclusive. I got Shrek 1-3 for $30. The case has an empty slot to add #4. I then found that in a paper sleeve for $14! So all four movies in 3d for $44! Well worth it! |

I got the complete collection 1-4 for 24.95 , and there are quite a few other sellers on ebay who have the 4 discs in the 30 dollar range as well. you cant beat those prices for a collection 4 big studio 3D movies. I find it funny though that even with all the legit promo sets people are offering out there from sellers with 100 percent feedback in that 24 to 30 dollar range that all the straight out bidding ones reach upwards of 50 60 bucks. |

I think you guys are lucky because in the States you can get quite a good deal like that, here in the UK each disc retails for 22 pounds a pop and there are some real comedians on eBay who then sell them for even more than that.

I got Shrek Collection for 999 czech crowns (it´s around 30 pounds). I think it´s a great deal. I saw only first 2, but ...oh gosh, it looks great! First Shrek have some antialiasing problems but Shrek 2 looks almost perfect. Great job I think...
