I wish the same thing! I missed my chance on the Volume 1 blu-ray set and now it goes for crazy prices on the secondary market.

I'm watching these right now on Comcast On Demand. If you have that (it's possible other providers might have it as well, but I have Comcast) look for them. The ones I see available are:

The Masque of the Red Death (1964)
The Raven (1963)
House on Haunted Hill (1959)
The Fall of the House of Usher (1960)
The Haunted Palace (1964)
The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)

I plan on trying to watch them all this month (already watched 2 of them).

* - 1st Time Viewing

10/1 - *Trick 'r Treat (2007)
[Show spoiler]

I really liked the cast and acting throughout this movie, and the cinematography and music were top-notch as well. I liked that it was basically an anthology, but that each of the stories were interconnected. I had a lot of fun with it. It's got plenty of scary scenes, some gross-out stuff, and a lot of funny parts too.

10/1 - *I, Madman (1989)
[Show spoiler]

Cool villain, nice lead actress, some interesting ideas. The occasional goofy stop-motion stuff is kind of weird. A little slow at times, a little cliche. Overall, it was a decently fun movie.

10/1 - *Lost After Dark (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Stereotypical characters, cliche scenario, stiff acting, unconvincing effects and editing, lack of humor... It was gimmicky and failed as an homage, with so much missing the mark. There were only a couple of brief scenes that were pretty fun.

10/1 - *The Editor (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Great job creating the vibe of a traditional giallo, very good cinematography and music. The acting really got on my nerves though, and the whole thing started to feel too much like a gimmick at times. The plot was really confusing for me, but some of the scenes in this movie were truly great, including some that had me literally rolling on the floor laughing. I kind of thought it didn't go all in enough on the parody aspect.

10/1 - *It Follows (2014)
[Show spoiler]

Great atmosphere, great concept, great execution, great music, great acting! I liked the characters and they actually displayed normal levels of human intelligence and intuition in most of the movie.

10/1 - Fright Night (1985)
[Show spoiler]

I really like the feel of this movie, it's kind of light-hearted, but suspenseful as well. Some of the characters are very odd in a charming sort of way. There is a lot of funny stuff in this, and the gore & special effects in the final act are really cool. Just great characters, atmosphere, writing, and everything all around. A lot of fun.

10/1 - *Castle Freak (1995)
[Show spoiler]

Great plot, great atmosphere & setting, excellent acting, convincing effects work, moody lighting, interesting characters. Totally engrossing, enhanced by the gruesomeness of it all. Just a really wonderful, freaky as hell movie.

10/1 - Swamp Thing (1982)
[Show spoiler]

Not a great movie, but it's a pretty fun kid-friendly 1950's drive-in style B-movie. Kind of slow to get going, but the finale is an absolute blast, complete with ridiculous rubber suit special effects and hammy performances.

10/2 - *The Babadook (2014) -
[Show spoiler]

The story was good, I liked how they explored how this kind of psychological torture might effect a family in the real world. The lead actress was absolutely amazing in this. It was a very well-done movie, but it did feel REALLY long to me for some reason, and while I really appreciate the movie a lot, it doesn't strike me as something I'll want to rewatch anytime soon.

10/2 - *The Hole (2009)
[Show spoiler]

This is the kind of movie I probably would have loved if I'd seen it as a kid. It felt pretty juvenile to me. I appreciated a lot of the homage to other horror movies, but it just wasn't that suspenseful to me, and I didn't identify with the relationship between the brothers, or the concept behind their fears. Although I admit I was never bored while watching, and the final scenario was pretty cool with a really awesome set.

10/2 - *Body Bags (1993)
[Show spoiler]

I'm not exaggerating when I say that, for me, this movie is PERFECT. I love the morgue scenes between the stories, I love all 3 stories, and really I just love everything about it. The acting is top notch across the board, as is the special effects & makeup work. Direction is spot-on, great music, great photography, great stories. The Gas Station is very suspenseful and scary, and the other two are quirky and crazy and just awesome. I feel like this is criminally underrated.

10/2 - *Eyes Without a Face (1960)
[Show spoiler]

Immediately I felt like I was watching an early version of Almodovar's The Skin I Live In (one of my favorite films). This is an excellent movie, with a great story, some really creepy and even gruesome scenes, some good suspense, and a general macabre feeling. The acting and direction were top-notch all around, but I was a little disappointed with the musical score, it didn't even try to be suspenseful from what I could tell. This movie might have been even more effective with a more terrifying score, but as is the movie works really well, even if it does only marginally qualify as horror.

10/3 - Halloween (1978)
[Show spoiler]

One of the great intros and most exciting finales in horror history. Personally, I find a lot of the stuff in between to be uneventful, but there is a building sense of impending doom as it goes. Great photography, even better music. Pretty good acting, too. The movie holds up great, but I always thought it could have been edited down a bit to make it a bit more lean and better paced.

10/3 - A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
[Show spoiler]

Really great music and photography, good acting, and a truly terrifying concept. I don't always like when Freddy comes off as oddly humorous, and I honestly don't think it was intentional in this first one. I don't really care for the ending, either. But the movie has this crazy quality to it that's just downright fun to watch!

10/3 - *The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971)
[Show spoiler]

This was very underwhelming to me. It was really kitschy and kind of hokey, but I didn't laugh a single time. It wasn't frightening, but there were some cool special effects that were worth seeing I guess. It didn't really do anything for me.

10/3 - *The Pit and the Pendulum (1961)
[Show spoiler]

Atmospheric lighting, engaging and suspenseful musical score, top-notch acting, wonderful sets & costumes, engrossing plot. Very good movie all around.

10/3 - *Vampire's Kiss (1988)

Uhhh... what? This is an incredibly weird movie. The director clearly had no control over his star, and this is one of the most uneven, over-the-top performances I've ever seen. Cage can't figure out what accent he wants his character to have. The story in this is actually kind of interesting when it's all said and done, it might have been much better in the hands of a more capable director. It had me laughing maniacally a lot of the time. It kind of works as a tale of madness more than it does as a comedy, weirdly enough. Very entertaining, anyway.

10/3

Monkey Boy aka Chimera (1991)

[Show spoiler]Shortened video version of a longer British miniseries (originally titled Chimera), time has not been kind to it. When I was a kid, A&E aired it frequently and it always held my attention, but aside from how creepy the titular Monkey Boy looks, it doesn't have much else going for it. Maybe I'll try tracking down the full version before the end of the month.

The Boneyard (1991)

[Show spoiler]Phyllis Diller as a zombie demon with a little Norman Fell action on the side. There's nothing to dislike.

The Brain (1988)

[Show spoiler]Holy hell, this is a B-movie masterpiece! A doctor with a dastardly plan uses his own self-help television program to brainwash viewers with the help of...The Brain. It's up to a high school student with a penchant for blowing up bathroom plumbing with sodium packets to stop them!

Baffling production design (fluorescent light bulbs adorn every floor), some hilarious deaths (a woman saws her husband in half because he won't watch TV with her), and even a warning during the end credits not to mix sodium and water. I shit you not. It's glorious.

The Tally So Far...

10/1-10/10
[Show spoiler]10/2

Ghostkeeper (1981)

Rather incomprehensible due to budget constraints, but it's surprisingly effective for a low-budget Canadian horror flick. The snowbound setting works remarkably well and atmosphere is favored over blood & guts.

Hint: turn the color down on your TV and watch it in B&W. Kindertrauma.com recently wrote about this flick and suggested doing so; it's a great experience.

The Horror Show (1989)

Released about six months before Shocker and featuring almost the same premise, it's not nearly as wacky & entertaining, but it's got enough ridiculous moments to keep you watching. Especially Brion James as a turkey.

10/1

Spellbinder (1988)

Thoroughly stupid riff on The Wicker Man that possesses enough quirkiness to always entertain. Tim Daly rescues Kelly Preston from her own personal Chris Brown in the parking lot of his gym, takes her home for some snuggles, and then must contend with a cult that's stalking her (not Scientology). Some notables:

Mrs. Roper's office freakout, wherein she beats herself up...

...and Tim Daly taking a bath (who owns that many candles?).

[Show spoiler]10/1
(1) Alien (1979) (BD)
Nothing more needs to be said. A true classic and a strong start to the challenge.

(2) A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) (Streaming)
I think this movie does a very good job of capturing the feeling and effects of being lonely. It may be "slow" by western standards but I think the combination of the black and white was what helps make the story telling work so effectively. Plus. there's some great camera shots/scenes.

10/2
(3) Castle Freak (1995) (DVD)
It's like having the Band back together! Okay, cheesy joke aside, I'm not sure how I haven't seen this movie before. I love the Full Moon movies, Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, The Band Brothers and Stuart Gordon. I had gotten this movie a couple of months ago as I stocked up for this month and when I saw somebody had already watched it, (and loved it) I bumped it up on the to-watch-list. It really is a fun little gore-fest.

I had a nice little double feature at my friends house. We watched both of these out back on his projector. It made for a fun change of pace.

(4) 30 Days Of Night (2007) (DVD)
I am a fan of this movie and of the source material and I think they did a great job conveying the isolation, bleak circumstances and the nature of the vampires. I just wish the sequel had come to close to the original but then the situation did have a lot to do with how much I enjoyed the original.

(5) An American Werewolf in London (1981) (DVD)
A classic! just the right blend of horror and comedy.

10/3
(6) Burnt Offering (1976) (DVD) .5
Burnt Offering is a mildly creepy but predictable haunted house movie. The acting and atmospheric score are very good but there's no surprises here. Which, might be a bit unfair to ask when watching a 39 year old movie for the first time. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the steady progression of the haunting. And for just a second there I really thought they were going to
[Show spoiler]get out of there alive
...just kidding.

(7) The Invisible Ray (1936) (DVD) .5
I love old sci-fi movies that are filled with the romance of discovering the cosmos. It's an added bonus when those discoveries lead to horrific results. Despite having a superb cast I think this one does drag on just a little in the middle. Overall though, a fun look back at the way science, and its missuses, were written into movies.

- I have seen this before, but it was only bits and pieces.
I am still working my way through the Price-Corman-Poe films. I have both of the Price sets from Shout plus some of the Arrow standalone releases. Pretty much if Price is in it, I will watch it, and The Masque of the Red Death has been one of my favorite Poe stories. Very good for this sort of film.

Loved this one. Price was perfect, and a wax museum with its lifelike figures is creepy to begin with. The atmosphere and mood were great.

I just tried to start House of 1000 Corpses/Devil's Reject's double feature, but my Lionsgate House of 1000 Corpses disc has gone bad. I had checked it a few months ago to be sure, along with most of the other older LG titles. It worked then, but it does not now. It will try to load the menu, but will freeze and I even had half of the screen go purple with digital pixilation. Oh well, I just picked up the 88 Films release of Castle Freak, so I think I will watch that instead.

Defiantly weird, awfully funny horror movie (was there a stranger time to release a horror film than the late-70's?) with a couple of L.A. architects (Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott with his trademark bristle-brush 'stache) who find themselves enticed to a gloomy English manor house, where a group of Satanists (or something) are awaiting the demise of their mysterious beneficiary, who will bequeath his supernatural powers onto one of them after killing off the rest in a variety of gruesome/amusing ways. Directed by Richard Marquand (Return Of The Jedi) and co-written by Hammer veteran Jimmy Sangster, The Legacy is just plain bizarre, and not scary in the slightest, but it's so defiantly odd it's hard not to keep watching. Where else can you watch The Who's Roger Daltrey receiving a botched tracheotomy after choking on a chicken bone, Sam Elliott having a standoff with a rooftop sniper armed with a crossbow, or a horseback getaway scene scored with disco music?

Final Destination -

Still my favorite of the series. I just love the premise to this one and while it's not particularly scary, there are still some moments that still have me biting my nails in anticipation. I do admit that the movie seems mow through the deaths of the kids/teacher rather quickly, but at least the death scenes are satisfying. This one still has my favorite of the series with

Wasn't expecting much. But I did expect more goofiness and gore In The Hood.

You would think that having a serious Leprechaun movie would be good in some way, but Origins is just bland. I enjoy most of the others in the series because they are unapologetically bad and silly, and it seems to be funner that way. Thus, I like the first four of the series the best (although they all suck in their own ways ).

Come to think of it, my scores correlate pretty closely to how I grade the Police Academy series.

Me lucky pot of gold (aka, what I've watched so far):

Did a double feature of the Hitcher and its remake. I had seen the remake before never the original. Neither are really horror movies. Especially the remake which feels more like an action movie. The original is more creepy and that's because Rutger Hauer really delivers. Much more so than Sean Bean. The remake also felt like the shortest movie I've ever watched.

2.) 10/2 - Stir of Echoes (BD) *
3.) 10/3 - The Hitcher (1986) (DVD) *

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) (Re-Watch)

Insidious: Chapter 3 (Re-Watch)

I know a lot didn't care for it. But I liked it. The one scene still made me jump even knew I was aware of it. In the theaters it literally made me jump. Also if you are paying attention. You will see James Wan in a cameo as one of the people at the acting school.

10/3 - The Devil's Advocate

Great cast with Al Pacino as John Milton aka
[Show spoiler]the devil
notice how subtle & crafty he is, Keanu Reeves as lawyer Kevin Lomax, watch out the lure of temptation will always come back to haunt you & Charlize Theron as Kevin's wife Mary Ann Lomax. This is how a BD PQ should look on all movies!

10/3 - The Omen (1976)

Superb cast with Gregory Peck as Robert Thorn an American diplomat that is appointed ambassador to Great Britain, the lovely Lee Remick as Robert's wife, Harvey Stephens as Damien, Billie Whitelaw as Mrs. Baylock the nanny, David Warner as freelance photographer Keith Jennings, Patrick Troughton as Father Brennan. So many great scenes throughout The Omen such as
[Show spoiler]the safari park, Damiens' 5th birthday party, The Thorns travel to the church one Sunday, Father Brennan at the church, Thorn & Jennings travel to a local cemetery, Thorn and Jennings travel to Jerusalem...so many!
. Perfect ambiance on a overcast fall day or night, highly recommend...let yourself go and instill yourself in the world of The Omen...Pleasant nightmares

Cancelled plans means I had a big movie day today.

* - First time viewing

10/3 - *Dracula 2000 (2000) -

Ok so I figured going in this would be terrible. But there were a few things about it that were pretty good; the opening scene with the thieves, Omar Epps as a vampire, some of the one-liners. And especially the ending reveal, that Dracula is actually Judas and was punished by God with the curse of vampirism for betraying Jesus. That was great. The rest was meh.

10/3 - The Prowler (1981) -
[Show spoiler]

A fun slasher film, though not a perfect one. There's a fine line between suspense and boredom, and The Prowler got dangerously close to stepping over more than once. The cop slowly walking through the wheelchair guy's house, then later in a graveyard, then back to that house again. But the gore effects/kills were great and the characters were likable enough. Oh and I think I have a crush on Vicky Dawson, who played the lead character Pam. She was just gorgeous in this and she melted my heart.

10/3 - Sleepaway Camp (1984) -
[Show spoiler]

It's been a couple years since I last saw Sleepaway Camp but I'm glad I watched it again, it was really enjoyable. The last scene is just as intense as ever; I got chills seeing Angela naked, sitting on the beach and humming that creepy song. And then the giant reveal right after, God. A great ending.

10/3 - *The Mummy's Tomb (1942) -
[Show spoiler]

I appreciated what they did with the story of this one, bringing back the cast from the last film, The Mummy's Hand, and setting it 30 years after those events took place. But it bummed me out that they just ended up killing off all of those characters, especially when the main characters in this one weren't nearly as interesting. They killed Wallace Ford for crying out loud! How could they?

10/3 - Underworld (2003) -
[Show spoiler]

One of my favorite films, I just love it. A great blend of action and horror makes for a great time.

10/3 - Hostel: Part 2 (2007) -
[Show spoiler]

I think I enjoy this one more than the first film. The main characters are more likable than the two American idiots in the first one, and the story is a little more entertaining. I enjoyed seeing things unfold from the perspective of the clients.

10/3 - *The Gorgon (1964) -
[Show spoiler]

Probably the best Hammer film I've seen thus far this month, The Gorgon is a pretty solid film. I've never seen Christopher Lee in a role like this, being a professor, but he does an amazing job at it. The biggest gripe I, and apparently many others have with the film, is how bad the Gorgon wig looks. The snakes look blatantly fake and it really takes you out of the scene when you finally see a closeup of the Gorgon.

10/3 - Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines (2012) -
[Show spoiler]

I'm only giving it 2 stars because some of the gore and kills were really inventive, they rank up there as some of the best in the series. And I also thought the ending was really good and really dark. It's a bit dumb that Doug Bradley's serial killer character was introduced in 5 and was never brought up before, they really stretch the timeline/canon with that one. But of course there's what you would expect with this film; bad acting, forgettable characters, poor CGI special effects in places, and the set design was really bad. Oh well, bring on number 6!

10/3 - *The Ape Man (1943) -
[Show spoiler]

How could a movie with Bela Lugosi spending the entire running time as a half man, half ape and Wallace Ford hamming it up like only he can be boring? I don't know, but they did it. Plus the version I watched had extremely poor audio quality which made things difficult to follow in places. Of course this isn't the film's fault, but I don't think I missed much.

been over a decade since I've seen this one but my opinion hasn't really changed much-- this is a creepy and disturbing film that offers a solid horror experience but suffers from being too nihilistic in it's outcome. I think it was Leonard Maltin that said that this has one of the most nasty endings ever and I agree... it lowers the film a full skull for me...

When I first saw that. I didn't like the ending. and made me not like the film as much. But over the years it has changed.
